Page contents: Each year, more than 9,000 Australians under 55 experience experience experience a heart attack Australian Institute of Health and Welfare HEALTH health Minh Thai Priceline Pharmacist The risk factors Some common risk factors for heart disease apply to both men and women. They include: • Family history • High blood pressure and cholesterol • Smoking • Diabetes • Not getting enough or too much sleep • Lack of physical activity • Poor diet • Obesity Nine in 10 Australian women have one risk factor, and 50 per cent have two or three risk factors. Additional and lesser-known risk factors for women include using hormonal contraceptives, having endometriosis or polycystic ovary syndrome, experiencing preeclampsia or gestational diabetes during pregnancy and being post-menopausal. The symptoms Heart attacks rarely play out like they do in the movies, so don’t wait until you’re clutching at your chest to call an ambulance. Men are more likely to experience the typical symptoms that come to mind when you think of a heart attack: crushing chest pain, squeezing or discomfort in the chest, pain in the arm, jaw or back, breaking out into a cold sweat and feeling lightheaded, nauseous or a shortness of breath. Only about half of all women who have a heart attack report chest pain. They’re more likely to feel a burning in the chest that’s similar to heartburn, a tightness in the jaw, neck and back, fatigue, dizziness, nausea (and may even vomit) and a shortness of breath. Women and heart disease Because women experience different symptoms to men, they often dismiss the experience as stress or anxiety, meaning they delay seeking care. When they do present to a Doctor or hospital, it’s harder for medical professionals to associate the symptoms with cardiac issues because the symptoms tend to be vague and non-specific. Experts also find that women especially young women don’t consider themselves as vulnerable to heart disease as men, so a heart attack is the last thing on their minds when the signs start to show. But with cardiovascular disease (which includes coronary heart disease, stroke and blood vessel disease) the leading cause of death for women globally according to the Heart Foundation, it’s important to recognise the warning signs to help improve recovery and survival outcomes. Heart Heart disease is often considered to be a middle-aged man’s problem, but that’s not actually the case. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, each year, more than 9,000 Australians under 55 experience a heart attack. And women are more likely to die from heart disease than breast cancer, with an average of 20 Australian women dying from coronary heart disease every day. “Caring “Caring for our hearts is crucial throughout life, and early lifestyle choices relating to diet and exercise profoundly impact heart health later,” says Priceline Pharmacist Minh Thai. The key to looking after your heart is understanding your risk factors, knowing the symptoms and making some easy (and cost-effective) lifestyle changes.

Supports bone strength and cardiovascular health: SWIISH Bone + Heart Health 60 Tablets, $69.95. Supports general health and wellbeing: Fusion Health Women’s Multi Advanced 30 Tablets, $32.95. SLEEP Adults need a minimum of seven and a maximum of nine hours of sleep each night to reduce their risk of heart disease, yet up to 60 per cent of Australians report suffering from at least one chronic sleep issue. A good starting point is to consider your sleep hygiene that is, your pre-bedtime routine and behaviours. Try to create a calming bedroom environment; avoid caffeine, nicotine and alcohol in the hours before going to bed; aim for a regular bedtime; and keep your bedroom for sleep and sex only (no work, phones or watching movies). MENTAL HEALTH Do what you can to reduce stress. Some people find comfort in meditating, going for walks in nature or by talking to a mental health professional. QUIT SMOKING Speak to your GP about the best quitting strategy for you. You can also call 13 QUIT or visit quit.org.au. CHECK-UPS “If there’s a family history of heart disease, early screening and adopting a heart-healthy lifestyle is crucial,” Minh says. “Consult a healthcare professional for personalised advice.” GPs provide free Heart Health Checks to non-Indigenous people 45 and over, and First Nations people 30 and over, covered by Medicare. DIET Eating a balanced diet that’s high in fibre and low in sodium and saturated fats can help to reduce your risk of heart disease. Swap meat for legumes such as beans, chickpeas, tofu and lentils; stock up on frozen fruit and veggies so there’s always something to cook when you’re tempted to order in (and if you do order in, go for something loaded with vegetables, and try to keep half the serving for lunch the next day); and avoid added sugars. A 2022 study published in the journal Heart also found that swapping regular salt for a reduced-sodium, salt substitute lowered blood pressure and protected against stroke, heart attack and early death. EXERCISE Only about one in four Australian adults currently meets the recommended weekly physical activity guidelines: 150-300 150-300 150-300 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity (that’s 30-60 30-60 30-60 minutes, five times a week of an exercise that gets your breathing and heart rate up to the point where you can still talk but wouldn’t be able to sing). Or 75-150 75-150 75-150 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity such as cycling, hiking, swimming or running plus regular muscle strengthening. If you’re not there yet, research shows that walking just 7000 steps a day produced a 50 to 70 per cent lower risk of mortality from any cause compared to those who walk less. But remember, it’s important to check with your Doctor before embarking on a new fitness regimen. How to boost your heart health “Healthy habits decrease the risk of cardiovascular issues this means staying active, maintaining a balanced diet, managing stress, avoiding smoking and limiting alcohol intake,” Minh says. While it’s important to create healthy habits from a young age, we must be particularly vigilant as we get older. “Strengthening heart health in your 60s is vital as the risk increases,” says Minh. “Regular check-ups are essential for early detection and intervention, and exercise, a heart-healthy diet and stress management are key.” There are also pharmaceutical interventions that your GP may recommend, such as a CoQ10 supplement. “These may benefit those with heart conditions by enhancing energy production [in cells] and providing antioxidant defence,” says Minh. The good news is that most of the following lifestyle changes are free and can even save you money. A healthy heart and a healthy wallet? Sign us up!

What causes gas and bloating? Can they be avoided? “Gas and bloating can be caused by many different factors ranging from foods such as carbohydrates, beans and artificial sweeteners to swallowing air when you eat or drink too quickly,” says Minh. If you’re experiencing gas and bloating linked to IBS, Minh suggests: “Identify and reduce your trigger foods and adopt a balanced diet rich in soluble fibre.” Also look to foods that are known for their properties, such as avocados, oats, celery, fennel and mint. “If your symptoms persist, probiotic and digestive enzyme supplements are great options as well,” adds Minh. If it’s been a while since we’ve gone number two, how can we move things along? “My advice is to prioritise hydration aiming for about two litres of water a day and eat a fibre-rich diet with fruits, vegetables and whole grains,” recommends Minh. “Physical activity can also stimulate bowel movements, so try to get regular exercise.” Supplements can be beneficial as well. “Fibre supplements and probiotics can aid with regular, healthy bowel movements,” says Minh. “Or for a short-term solution, a Pharmacist can help you find a suitable laxative.” Apart from curling up in the foetal position, what can we do to ease stomach cramps? “Applying a heat pad or warm compress to the abdominal area can alleviate tension, as can gentle massage,” says Minh. For added relief, he also suggests antispasmodics. These medications relax and reduce contractions of muscles in the gastrointestinal tract to help reduce abdominal pain and cramping. What exactly is IBS? What are the symptoms to be aware of? “Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a medically diagnosed gastrointestinal disorder. While genetics may play a role, IBS can also be linked to triggers such as stress, diet and gut health,” explains Minh. “Its symptoms can vary widely from person to person, but abdominal pain, bloating and bowel habit changes can be common.” Sometimes IBS can strike when you least expect it! How can we figure out why? “A good way to start is by avoiding foods you think might be triggers and keeping a food or flare-up diary,” says Minh. This can help you spot trends and track your symptoms. “Then, incorporate new foods gradually and try to manage other triggers such as stress with relaxation techniques. It’s also important to maintain a healthy gut flora with a high-fibre diet tailored to your sensitivities and potentially a supplement routine to manage IBS symptoms.” Gut go-tos Prevent and relieve symptoms with these buys

Page contents: Always read the label and follow the directions for use. How can I help my hair grow back? Start by seeking medical advice from a healthcare professional and investigate if underlying health concerns or nutritional deficiencies are behind your hair loss. From here, support a happy, healthy scalp by boosting blood flow. “Try gentle massages with your fingers or a scalp massager,” says Farnaz. “This can assist with stimulating blood circulation to the scalp and help relax the tension we sometimes hold there.” If you’re game, Farnaz has another suggestion: “This may sound crazy, but hanging with your head upside down over the bed for five minutes a day can be a great way to increase the blood flow to the scalp.” Supplements formulated with silica, biotin and other B vitamins could also be beneficial to give your body everything it needs to grow strong, thick hair. Love your locks Try these to support your strands “Shedding 50 to 100 hairs per day is completely normal” HEALTH health priceline.com.au Nioxin Professional Trial Kit System 5 3-Piece Set, $66.99. VÖOST Plus Hair, Skin & Nails Strawberry + Kiwi 20 Effervescent Tablets, $14.99. What is traction hair loss? While slicked buns, sleek ponytails and braids are a great way to avoid hairdryers and their associated heat damage, these high-tension hairstyles apply a different kind of pressure. “Traction hair loss is caused by repeatedly wearing your hair tightly pulled back,” says Farnaz. This loosens and pulls hair from the follicle, and can contribute to balding in the long-term. By swapping rubber elastics for scrunchies and loosening ponytails and braids, you can be gentler on delicate hair and support its recovery. Our Our hair is closely tied to our self-expression and, for some of us, it’s our security blanket. So finding more hair than usual in our brush, bed or shower can be a distressing sight. Here, Priceline Pharmacist Farnaz Famouri explains the causes of hair loss and what it means for your overall health, plus ways you can support hair growth and thickness from the inside out. What causes hair loss? “Shedding 50 to 100 hairs per day is completely normal,” says Farnaz. “It’s considered hair loss when you see the gradual thinning of hair or patches of bald spots. You might even notice your hairline gradually receding.” When that happens, it’s time to find the root cause. Hair naturally becomes thinner with age, but it can be exacerbated by a range of factors. “Stress, illness, hereditary conditions such as pattern hair loss and medications like chemotherapy can all contribute to hair loss,” says Farnaz. Lifestyle factors including low iron, zinc, silica and biotin levels can also trigger hair loss and stand in the way of healthy hair growth. What is pattern hair loss? Pattern hair loss is the progressive loss of hair over time. It’s often determined by genetics and occurs in different patterns for men and women. “Female hair loss usually begins along the part, while male pattern hair loss starts as a receding hairline and progresses to the crown,” says Farnaz. Female pattern hair loss can become most obvious after menopause this is when oestrogen and progesterone levels drop, which makes hair grow slower and eventually shrinks the hair follicle. It’s also thought high levels of androgens in women with polycystic ovary syndrome can trigger hair loss. Male pattern hair loss is caused by the body’s natural conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). As DHT accumulates in the scalp, it weakens the hair follicle and causes hair to fall out. Supports hair health when dietary intake is inadequate. Always read the label and follow the directions for use. Do I need a scalp- care routine? A few science-backed switches can strengthen your hair routine. “The scalp needs to be cleansed so the hair follicles are not clogged up with oil and hair products,” says Farnaz, who suggests a clarifying tea tree oil or hydrating aloe vera shampoo. Follow with a caffeine or peppermint oil shampoo or a topical minoxidil solution and a dermaroller to support hair follicles and healthy hair growth.

Skip the high-intensity cardio this week in favour of rest and gentle movement, and give your skin an extra hydration boost by drinking plenty of water and popping on a nourishing sheet mask. Additionally, consuming iron-rich foods such as leafy greens and legumes (but not red meat, which may exacerbate cramping) can be particularly beneficial in replenishing nutrients lost through menstruation. Follicular phase (days 8 to 13) 13) “During this stage, your brain releases a hormone that tells your body to stimulate the production of follicles on an ovary,” explains Aimee. “This phase actually starts on the first day of your period and lasts for 13 to 14 days, before ovulation begins.” Rising oestrogen levels and relief from premenstrual symptoms during this stage lead to improved energy levels and a mood lift, lift, so take advantage of these perks by incorporating more movement or scheduling a catch-up with a friend. If you’re after a soft, natural effect, she suggests an eyebrow powder. “It adds diffused colour to the skin behind the hairs, so it’s a lovely way to give the illusion of fuller brows.” For a little more definition, both Sarah and Xanthe reach for a pencil. “Brow pencils are great for mimicking hair-like strokes in sparse areas,” explains Xanthe. If you’re after a high-impact look, try a pomade or brow pen. “Pomades stay on the skin longer than both a pencil or powder, and when you apply a pomade with a thin brush, it can give a sharper, thinner hair stroke,” explains Sarah. “It’s a great choice if you love a strong brow.” Finally, set your brows with a swipe of gel. “A clear formula will keep the hairs in place, while a tinted one will also deliver colour for fullness and a brushed-up, fluffy effect,” says Sarah. 4. 4. Tidy up If your brows took a hit in the ’90s, ’90s, ’90s, you’re probably nervous about picking up a pair of tweezers. But Priceline Hair & Makeup Director Sarah Laidlaw is here to calm your nerves. “Nobody will ever be standing close enough to judge your brows the way you will close up in the mirror,” she says. Before you start grooming, Sarah’s tip is to brush your brows up and outwards with a clean spoolie. “Then stand back to get a feel for the shape.” This will help you create a natural, balanced set of brows and minimise the temptation to take away too many hairs. But remember: “Everyone’s right and left brows are different from each other they’re sisters not twins,” says Sarah. “Trying to make them match will send you crazy!” When it’s time to tweeze, Sarah has this advice for a flattering result: “Most people will benefit from removing stray hairs from under the tail of the brow this will give your eye a lifted effect and open your face.” For precision, Priceline Beauty Advisor Xanthe Panella swears by slanted tweezers, which will align to the brow area. “My brows are naturally sparse, so I only need to pluck a few hairs here and there,” she says. “Then I get the baby hairs with a face defuzzer.” Alternatively, if you’re blessed with thick and full brows, Xanthe suggests an at-home eyebrow wax for longer-lasting results. 1. 1. The trick to keeping this makeup artist technique a secret? “Use a lip liner in the same shade as, or one shade darker than, your natural lip colour,” advises Sarah. But Xanthe warns one mistake could give the game away. “Be careful not to overline the outer corners of the lips too much, because this can make them look unnatural,” says Xanthe, who uses a smudging brush to gently diffuse any harsh lip liner. 11. Prep and plump Thinning lips are part of the natural ageing process. “With age, our skin loses elasticity, firmness and collagen, which can cause our features to shift,” says Sarah. “So when the cheeks and chin start to fall, our lips can turn downwards and inwards and lose volume, making them appear smaller and thinner.” That means it’s time to indulge your lips in some skincare. While tingling lip plumpers can perk up lips temporarily for special occasions, Sarah suggests taking lip care slow and steady. “Ingredients such as hydrating hyaluronic acid and sodium hyaluronate [salt derived from hyaluronic acid] or plumping peptides can visibly support the appearance of your lips over time, if you’re consistent,” she says. “Applying lip balm is the best way to care for your lips,” adds Xanthe. “I use one with SPF during the day and a richer formula when I go to sleep.” As part of her regular rotation, Sarah also favours a lip scrub. “It removes flaky, dry skin, revealing plump, hydrated lips for makeup.” If you’re prone to parched lips as the weather cools, she also loves a lip mask. “It’s a wonderful overnight boost to heal dry, cracked lips.” 8. The gloss will bounce off light, tricking the eye into seeing juicer lips. “Hydrated, glossy lips always appear fuller than dry lips,” she explains. As for the formula, a nourishing lipstick is your best bet, although Xanthe warns against a approach. “As we age, our lips become prone to dryness and fine lines, so look for hydrating formulas,” she says. “However, these lipsticks can also be prone to feathering.” If you find hydrating lipsticks, balms and glosses gathering in fine lines around your lips, Sarah suggests a different method: “Try a long-lasting matte formula to keep the colour in place, then add a clear lip balm over the top for hydration and shine.” A tinted lip balm is also an essential in both Sarah and Xanthe’s kits for an effortless, on-the-go hit of hydration and colour. 13. Priceline Beauty Advisor Annie Koch shares her tricks for a bright, beautiful outlook Eyes Eyes Eyes on on you you They They say the eyes are a window to the soul and as Priceline Beauty Advisor Annie Koch explains, they’re also a window to our busy modern lives. “The skin around our eyes is more delicate than the rest of the face; it isn’t supported by fatty tissue and produces less sebum than the rest of our face,” she says. This means the fine skin is more susceptible to dryness, ageing and signs of tiredness. So we asked Annie to share her tips for waking up tired eyes with a tailored skincare and makeup routine. An eye cream or eye gel infused with hyaluronic acid will plump the area and create a smooth base for your makeup. Got 10 minutes to spare? “Apply a hydrogel under-eye patch to really bump up hydration. It’s a technique beloved by celebrity makeup artists,” shares Annie. 5. Q+A Seaweed Peptide Eye Gel 15mL, $13. $13. $13. 6. Revolution Skincare Hyaluronic Acid Hydro Gel Eye Patches 30 Pairs, $30. $30. $30. Be strategic with concealer When it comes to makeup under the eyes, Annie says less is more. “Excessive product emphasises dry, textured skin and gathers in fine lines around the eye,” she explains. “So use just enough makeup to get the job done.” She also recommends using a hydrating concealer for a smooth, flattering finish. To apply concealer, Annie starts with a small dot below the inner corner of the eye. “This way you’re targeting the tear trough, which is deeper set and tends to have the most discolouration.” Blend the concealer using a damp sponge or your ring finger and a soft, tapping motion to distribute and diffuse the product without pulling at the delicate skin. Then set the concealer with a little powder to stop your coverage moving during the day. 7. e.l.f. Hydrating Camo Concealer, $14. $14. $14. Brighten dark circles “Darkness under the eyes can be tricky to combat,” says Annie. Start by identifying the cause using the ‘pinch’ test. With clean, bare skin, look into the mirror and very carefully lift the skin under your eyes with your thumb and forefinger. If your skin keeps its dark colouring, it’s likely hereditary or sun-induced hyperpigmentation under the eyes. “An eye cream or serum with vitamin C can be helpful,” suggests Annie. If your pinched skin turns to your regular skin tone, the shadowing that you’re seeing is most likely caused by thinning skin and dilated blood vessels, exacerbated by stress, dehydration and poor sleep. In this case, try a hydrating eye cream with brightening pigments to bounce light from the area. 3. La Roche-Posay Pigmentclar Eyes 15mL, 15mL, $46.99. $46.99. $46.99. $46.99. $46.99. 4. Depuff your eyes “Puffiness around the eyes can have many causes, such as lack of sleep, genetics and allergies,” says Annie. Meet the moisture barrier What it is “The moisture barrier is the outermost layer of your skin,” explains Aimee. “It plays a vital role of protection and determines which oils and nutrients are retained, which regulates skin’s hydration.” How it’s compromised Just like the skin microbiome, the skin moisture barrier can be compromised by high-powered or hydration-stripping skincare, stress, excess time in the sun or pollution. This can trigger inflammation and irritation, so you might experience a tight, itchy or burning sensation as well as dry, sensitive areas, redness or breakouts. What to do Aimee suggests swapping out harsh products such as physical and chemical exfoliants and retinol for a few weeks. Instead, look for gentle formulas with hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and squalane to boost moisture levels and help the skin’s natural healing process. Then, slowly reintroduce active skincare ingredients like retinol, exfoliators and vitamin C after a few weeks. How do you know if you’ve damaged the skin microbiome? “Inflammation, irritations, blemishes and redness can occur when our skin microbiome is damaged or out of balance,” says Aimee. So if you’ve spent time in the sun, over-cleansed with harsh, pH-altering soaps or taken a course of antibiotics, you might have compromised your skin microbiome. How can you repair the skin microbiome? “Start by reassessing your skincare routine. There shouldn’t be too many products and they should all work harmoniously together,” advises Aimee. “You could also check in with your Priceline Pharmacist or Beauty Advisor to find out which ingredients do and don’t mix well, because some skincare actives may be detrimental if they’re not in the right balance or order.” It’s also important to nourish your skin from the inside. “Diet plays a big role in both the gut and skin microbiomes,” says Aimee, who recommends adopting a varied diet with fruits, vegetables and minimal sugar. Supplements such as prebiotics and probiotics can also help the body’s microbiome flourish for healthy, glowing skin. If If the rise of gut health has taught us anything, it’s that not all bacteria are bad and the body’s microbiome is vital to our wellbeing. It’s the same story with our skin health. So we asked Priceline Pharmacist Aimee Rose to break down our skin microbiome and explain how we can support our skin’s good germs. What is the skin microbiome? “A microbiome is a collection of microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi and viruses that live in or on our bodies,” says Aimee. “Our skin has a microbiome that’s unique to each individual and even unique to the location of the body.” Not only is the skin microbiome vital for fighting off skin infections and healing wounds, it’s also part of our immune system. “It’s the body’s first layer of physical protection and acts like a natural antibiotic,” says Aimee.

For Janrei, serums are the obvious choice. “Face serums are widely popular and there’s a reason why in my opinion, they’re the most beneficial product for your skin,” skin,” he says. “Typically, most face serums have a lightweight formula, which allows the skin to absorb them quickly and easily. Some of the most popular actives include anti-ageing alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), breakout-banishing beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) and hydration-boosting ceramides and hyaluronic acid. Janrei’s favourite all-rounder is vitamin C. “It’s the Holy Grail of antioxidants,” he says, referring to its ability to fight the appearance of fine lines, brighten dark spots and impart an overall radiance. “Vitamin C has the power to revitalise your complexion. Plus, it’s amazing for all skin types, even sensitive skin.” If you’re after something that packs a punch, retinol might be your skincare superhero. “Retinol can have a seriously transformative effect on the skin,” says Janrei. “It’s able to reduce visible wrinkles, speed up cell turnover, even out skin texture and tone and reduce hyperpigmentation. hyperpigmentation. But it’s a very strong irritant, so it’s best to stay away from it if you have sensitive skin. Whether you’re still brushing up on basics or need an explainer on the latest trends, Priceline Beauty Advisor Janrei Dultare talks us through what we really need to know when it comes to skincare. Back to basics Bewildered by all the skincare options? Start with a pared-back everyday routine that ticks all the boxes. “When it comes to skincare, more isn’t always merrier,” merrier,” says Janrei. “You can make your skin worse by using too many products.” Your routine should begin with a good cleanse to rid your skin of dirt, makeup and excess oil. Then, lock in hydration with a nourishing moisturiser, opting for a formula tailored to your skin type. Finally, slather on sunscreen experts at the Cancer Council recommend using a water-resistant sunscreen of SPF 30 or above. And remember, everyone has different skincare needs. needs. “I had a long journey before I finally found the skincare routine that suits my skin,” says Janrei. “Even then, it depends on so many different factors that it can easily change again. Add these buzzwords to your repertoire How to support your teenager through acne flare-ups Actives Actives Actives Actives Actives Actives vs active breakouts Active: A skincare ingredient that has been scientifically proven to benefit a particular skin concern, such as retinol or vitamin C. Antioxidant: A substance like vitamin C that helps protect skin from oxidation and the damaging effects of environmental aggressors like UV rays and pollution. Broad spectrum: Used to describe an SPF formulated for UVA and UVB rays. Collagen: The structural protein that’s naturally produced by the body to give skin its plump, bouncy quality. Unfortunately, it declines with age. Comedogenic: A science-y word for clogging so look for non-comedogenic products if you’re prone to oily, congested skin and breakouts. Elastin: A protein that gives skin its elastic resilience. Humectant: A substance that draws water into the skin for increased and lasting hydration, like hyaluronic acid. Occlusive: A barrier- creating moisturising agent that seals water into the skin and helps prevent its evaporation. Think: a luxurious face oil or the Vaseline step in the ‘slugging’ skincare trend. How do I start my teenager’s skincare routine? Skincare shouldn’t be overwhelming for teenagers or their skin. Instead, encourage patience and consistency by establishing healthy skin habits. “Begin with the basics, using a gentle cleanser, non-comedogenic moisturiser and facial sunscreen. During puberty, your teenager may need to switch their cleanser to an oil-control one for acne,” says Janrei, who suggests a foaming or gel cleanser. What skincare actives are beneficial for teenage acne? If your teen is experiencing whiteheads, blackheads or clogged pores, look for BHAs like salicylic acid. When used two to three times a week in a serum or moisturiser, these exfoliating acids dissolve dead skin cells, excess oil and pollution. This keeps skin clean and clear to help prevent pimples, stop acne bacteria from flourishing and reduce the appearance of pores. For redness and sensitivity associated with acne, moisturisers and serums with calming, balancing niacinamide and healing zinc can also be beneficial. Can I help my teen pop their pimples? As tempting as it is, popping pimples may lead to further inflammation, infection and scarring. “Instead, incorporate spot treatments to address specific areas of concern,” says Janrei. Try a targeted application of benzoyl peroxide to minimise acne-causing bacteria or a weekly fizzing mask with kaolin clay and sulphur to decongest skin and flatten pimples. Pimple patches can also be beneficial to help pull pus and excess oil from pimples and protect skin as it heals. Nothing is helping my teen, what should I do next? If breakouts persist, seek advice from a health professional. While fluctuations in hormones and hygiene are completely normal during teenage years, a general practitioner or dermatologist can investigate underlying causes, offer personalised advice and prescribe pharmaceutical solutions if required.

Listen Turn on your favourite tunes to boost your mood (dancing not mandatory but strongly encouraged). Get outside A quick walk around the block can help when you feel overwhelmed, and the burst of sunshine will bring a double dose of good cheer. Organise You’ll be surprised by how much a decluttered space will declutter your thoughts. Stretch Incorporate some yoga into your day to move your body and calm your mind. Meditate Just a few minutes of meditation is all that’s needed to enjoy the stress-relieving benefits. Take a bath Infused with Epsom salts, a warm bath is the ultimate tension-relieving elixir. How to recover The good news is that it is possible to not only bounce back from burnout but prevent it in the long term: 1. Turn Turn to others for support, particularly those who can act as a sounding board and help bring clarity to your thoughts. If your burnout is work-related, chat to your boss about how to best prioritise your workload and set healthy boundaries. Also consider talking to a professional who can offer coping methods for the challenges that are making you feel overwhelmed. 2. Prioritise Prioritise what makes you feel good. Exercise will improve your energy and mood plus help you sleep better. Self-care and activities that nourish your creativity will make you happier and benefit your overall wellbeing. And focus on a healthy diet (something that often falls by the wayside when we’re busy). If it’s coming up short, try a supplement. “A Pharmacist can provide personalised advice for supplementation strategies,” says Minh. “For example, ashwagandha may help the body manage stress, magnesium plays a role in relaxation and muscle function, B vitamins are essential for energy production and probiotics can improve mood and stress.” 3. 3. Change your mindset. Be gentler on yourself and accept that some things are beyond your control instead of stressing about them, channel that energy into something you can change. And don’t be afraid to say ‘no’ setting boundaries and not stretching yourself too thin will go a long way to keeping you feeling good. 4. 4. Take advantage of Priceline’s SiSU Health Stations. Offering insight into your emotional health and overall wellbeing, they can help you track how you’re feeling throughout your recovery. What is burnout? Burnout can feel like you’ve had the life sucked out of you. “It’s more than exhaustion; it’s a state of chronic emotional and physical fatigue resulting from prolonged stress,” says Minh. “Efficiency “Efficiency nosedives, fatigue becomes constant and detachment creeps in.” in.” You may experience headaches, digestive problems and an inability to concentrate. concentrate. Your behaviour can also change you may become easily irritated or withdraw from situations. “Anxiety and depression often tag along, making even simple tasks feel like climbing mountains,” adds Minh. The causes In small amounts, stress is manageable, even beneficial increasing productivity and energy levels (like when you have a deadline). But when you experience stress for an extended period of time or at a level higher than you can cope with, it can lead to burnout. While work is often to blame, with demanding job expectations and long hours among the main causes, other factors such as not getting enough sleep and being a perfectionist can also play a role.

Page contents: wellness “These ‘happy hormones’ make us feel good about ourselves ourselves ourselves if they are released in the right amount” Oxytocin Oxytocin Oxytocin The cuddle chemical Oxytocin is released upon physical contact with a partner or child, but also from a stranger or a pet. It’s what gives you the warm and fuzzies, and creates trust and bonding, thereby boosting feelings of happiness and connection. “Give someone a hug or call a friend,” Farnaz recommends. Find connection 1. Play with your kids or grandkids. 2. Stand up straight, stretch your arms out to the side and a little bit behind, tilt your chin up, close your eyes and take three deep breaths. 3. Join a martial arts class or a choir research has shown both activities benefit oxytocin production. Cortisol The survival mode Then there’s cortisol (aka the hormone), which gets a bad rap as the body’s stress response but can also be a blessing in disguise. It’s true that in stressful situations, our adrenal glands release a surge of cortisol, which increases our blood pressure and suppresses our digestive system. However, studies have found that cortisol can reduce negative feelings and be protective when it comes to mood. The key to hacking it is to take advantage of the body’s natural cortisol fluctuations throughout the day. Work with your energy 1. Exercise early in the morning when your cortisol levels are naturally higher and you feel more alert. 2. Do your least strenuous tasks in the afternoon when levels are lower. 3. Try box breathing: in for four counts, hold for four counts, out for four counts, then hold for four counts. Breathe into the diaphragm. Serotonin Serotonin Serotonin The mood booster Serotonin is considered a neutraliser because it helps to keep your mood steady by regulating your sleep cycles, appetite and body temperature. When your serotonin levels are just right, you should feel optimistic and calm like everything is right in the world. “We experience serotonin when we spend time in nature, make a gratitude list and have (careful) sun exposure,” says Farnaz. Aim for balance 1. Run and swim outside. 2. Twist at the waist, especially if you work at a desk. 3. Eat foods high in tryptophan, which can help increase your serotonin production. Try oats, bananas, prunes, milk, oily fish, cottage cheese, bread, poultry and almonds. Endorphins Endorphins Endorphins Endorphins Endorphins Endorphins The pain reliever Endorphins are the body’s natural pain relief. They kick in when you need to respond to pain or discomfort (as well as when we do things we find pleasurable), bringing your stress levels down and boosting your mood. Endorphins are fleeting, so repeating the activities that set them off can have effects. “Endorphins come from laughing out loud, exercising regularly, dancing and getting a massage,” says Farnaz. Kickstart your body 1. Eat spicy food, which can encourage the body to release endorphins. 2. Plunge into cold water. 3. Get acupuncture (request the endorphin pressure points). Have Have you heard of the ‘happy hormones’? That’s the nickname given to dopamine, serotonin, endorphins and oxytocin the chemicals that influence your mood. “These hormones make us feel good about ourselves if they are released in the right amount,” explains Priceline Pharmacist Farnaz Famouri. While these hormones can’t be switched on or off, there are ways to ‘hack’ them for a quick and natural happiness boost, such as with exercise or by eating certain foods. Read on for everything you need to know. Dopamine Dopamine Dopamine Dopamine Dopamine Dopamine The pleasure principle The brain releases dopamine as a reward for doing something we love. It’s associated with pleasure, learning and memory, and plays an important role in your mood because it allows you to feel satisfaction and motivation. “It’s good for us to do a task that gives us a dopamine release at least once a day,” says Farnaz. Reward yourself 1. Eat foods that are rich in tyrosine, which can help the body produce dopamine. Think: dairy, beans, poultry, bananas and almonds. 2. Do more of the things you love (within reason, of course). 3. Tick things off your to-do list.

Though reasons for choosing to forgo animal products vary, one factor is certainly health, with the World Health Organization recommending fruit, vegetables, legumes, nuts and whole grains as the cornerstone of any healthy diet. Although it’s not necessary to abide by the same diet your family member is committing to, it’s important to demonstrate your support by ensuring there are plant-based meal options if you’re responsible for the household grocery shopping. You may even find your own culinary landscape expanding if you typically adhere to a meat-based diet. “I know when my family or friends are happy, I feel happy!” says Aimee. “I also believe that giving is getting, and if you help others achieve their dreams then you will achieve yours.” 5. When they’re trying to quit smoking According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), tobacco use is the leading cause of cancer in Australia, accounting for 44 per cent of the cancer burden. However, despite how urgently we may want our loved ones to finally, definitively quit smoking, the Department of Health and Aged Care encourages family and friends to avoid being critical if the person trying to quit relapses, as that may only put them off trying again. Instead, the department highlights the need to have a positive attitude around their attempts at quitting, and to offer practical support. This may look like helping them avoid environments where they may want to smoke, such as pubs. Instead, plan to go out for dinner or exercise together. 1. Nicorette QuickMist Duo Spray 2 x 150 Sprays, $69.99. When they want to lose weight “Weight management is a common goal of many customers I interact with,” shares Aimee a revelation that coincides with the latest data from the AIHW, which states that two in three Australian adults are either overweight or obese. “It’s so sad that I hear so many people are unhappy with their body.” For those wishing to lose weight, Aimee suggests enlisting the help of a Pharmacist, who can offer expert advice tailored to a person’s situation. “Factors “Factors such as age may change what Pharmacists recommend.” There are also Wellbeing Clinics in selected Priceline stores that can offer assistance with maintaining a healthy weight and improving health. As for how family can help? Look for ways to get active and eat healthily together. While late-night scrolling and sleep don’t play well, a smartphone sleep tracker or smartwatch can be helpful. This tech will help you monitor your sleep cycle, quality of shut-eye and its duration, as well as identify any sleep sore spots. You can then use this data to your advantage. For example, if you find out you’re restless and slow to drift off, you’ll know to adapt your pre-bed routine. Or if you wake during the night or early in the morning, you can reassess your sleeping environment by blocking out morning sun. 3. Consider a supplement 2. Track Track Track your shut-eye 1.
