  • The eagerly awaited latest cinematic action experience from Finnish developers Housemarque, Saros, arrives this month. The games creative director, Gregory Louden, lets us in on some of what to expect. Words Amy FlowerAfter the success of their original IP Returnal, the people at Housemarque were keen to branch out with its follow-up.After Returnal we knew we had created something special and award-winning, but we also knew we wanted Returnalto stand on its own,” muses Louden. “With this in mind, we decided to create a new IP which evolves our deep third-person action and mysterious storytelling.Action is very much to the fore in Saros, which Housemarque are billing as featuring a “haunting story”. Loudon elaborates. “Set on the lost off-world colony Carcosa under an ominous eclipse, you play as Arjun Devraj, a powerful Soltari Enforcer who will stop at nothing to fi nd who he is looking for.Arjun is portrayed by actor Rahul Kohli, who many will remember fondly as Ravi from the super-fun TV series iZombie. “Rahul truly brings Arjun to life in a stunning performance,” enthuses Louden. “He’s been a brilliant collaborator to tell our story and a champion for the game. While there will be some similarities, those who want what is essentially Returnal II may need to adjust their expectations, for Housemarque aim for Saros to be its own beast – as Loudon explains.A key gameplay distinction between Sarosand Returnal is permanent resources and progression making every death valuable. After every death you’ll face a changed world, but in Saros you'll be able to choose and permanently upgrade your loadout from an evolving set of weapons and suit parts to ‘come back strongerto overcome the challenges you face on Carcosa. The planet of Carcosa sure sounds like a fascinating place...“It’s a shapeshifting, hostile alien planet – one that changes on every death - and offers a wide variety of environments and enemies to encounter,” says Loudon. “The stunning environment that Arjun explores is that of a lost ancient civilisation fuelled by the twisted enlightenment of an eclipse. But this is just one of the biomes our amazing team have created.Aiding in his quest, Arjun wears a combat suit that’s packed with rather useful abilities.Arjuns Soltari advanced combat suit allows him to dash, melee, jump, and more,” Loudon explains. At the start of every run you select your loadout from a mix ofSoltari human weaponry and Carcosan alien weaponry.Ah, but it isn’t that simple – there are strange forces at play, affecting your loadout – and beyond.“The eclipse corrupts the weapons, artifacts, world, and peoples’ minds,” says Loudon. “Arjun must push through the eclipse to fi nd answers, but with every attempt it adds corruption to Carcosa. “The eclipse also changes certain biome properties. In the Blighted Marsh, for example, how the marsh water comes alive and burns players when the eclipse is activated. Hostiles will also shoot yellow corrupted projectiles which reduce your max armour integrity unless cleansed using your power weapon.Accompanying the relentless gameplay is a killer soundtrack.“The dark-electronic meets drone-metal score was composed by the fantastic two-time Grammy Award-winning Sam Slater,Loudon tells us. “His past work includes collaborations on the acclaimed Chernobyl and Joker, as well as being part of the team behind the score for the cult fi lm Mandy. “The sound of the world also becomes corrupted during eclipse,” Loudon continues. “With the music distorting with layers of drone guitars that resonate across our world.Ultimately, Loudon says that Housemarque really hope players connect deeply with Saros. Our goal is to create an emotional and powerful character study that explores the cost it takes to create a new future. We’re super proud of how Saros plays, and we can’t wait for players to experience it.jbhifi.com.au 8APRIL 2026GAMINGFEATURE visit jbhifi .com.au/stackTHE TRUTHIS OUT THEREIF YOU LIKE THIS, YOU’LL LOVE THESE:Returnal, Control, Doom: The Dark AgesSarosis out Apr 30SarosFORMAT: GENRE: Action adventure MULTIPLAYER: Nofter the success of their original Housemarque were keen to evolves our deep third-person action and Returnal s Selene makes a return of sorts in Saros, with actor Jane Perry back as new character Sheridan Bouchard.DYK ?DYK ?st258_008_GAMING-Saros-PROOFED-AF.indd 1st258_008_GAMING-Saros-PROOFED-AF.indd 1 20/3/2026 2:30 pm20/3/2026 2:30 pm

  • Get ready for Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, the latest in Nintendos hit – and wonderfully bonkers - social simulation series, arriving on Switch this month. Let’s take a quick look back at the history of the series – and fi nd out what we can expect in this exciting new entry. Words Amy FlowerBeginningsThe original Tomodachi Collection was a Japan-only release for the Nintendo DS, which came out in June of 2009.The idea was originally arrived at by junior Nintendo employees, aiming to imitate the character creation in fortune-telling video game Tottoko Hamtaro: Tomodachi Daisakusen Dechu. While the idea of user-designed game characters was posited as far back as the 1980s by Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto, this is seen as the birth of the Mii.As one of the only DS games that featured Miis, which could be imported from the Wii console or other peoples’ handhelds, Tomodachi Collection let players interact with their very own Mii by taking on various in-game activities. From touching their thought bubbles to reveal their desires, to feeding, clothing, and teaching them short sentences via the inbuilt microphone, it was all happening in the Mii apartment building!Tomodachi hits the world! What had proved a sensation in its native Japan was let loose the world over with the arrival of Tomodachi Life on the 3DS – initially in Japan (as Tomodachi Collection: New Life), then following worldwide in June of 2014. Set on an island, the principles of the original continued with more abilities added to increase player engagement. These included the making of friends, interpersonal relationships that ranged from ghting and having arguments to making up, and relationships from dating to getting married, and even having kids.Miis could be further customised, including their voice, accent, and personality, while 3DS features StreetPass and Spotpass could be engaged to have visitors from other islands, and to receive souvenirs from visits and bonus items from Nintendo. The latest! This months new Nintendo Switch entry in the series – Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream(Tomodachi Collection: Exciting Life in Japan) – is set to expand on the world of the Miis even more.As controller of the in-game island, you once again get to create Miis with various tailored characteristics – from body parts to personalities - and let them get on with their lives, prompting them every so often just for fun, or to perhaps help them along their way.Yes, once they’ve moved in – up to eight in an apartment - you can help your Miis shape their personalities, and form relationships by introducing them to each other, which can lead to conversations, friendships, and sometimes even unexpected drama – it’s like having your very own gamifi ed soap opera! The island also features all manner of shops and services where Miis can buy items like food, clothes, and décor, as well as catching up on news and even taking photos. Players can create pets, design items, and invent custom objects for the island. Customisation options continue, with the ability to change the landscape by rearranging buildings and facilities, adding scenery, and more.Time in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream echoes that of our real world, so the idea is that you drop in regularly to check on how your little friends are getting along in their island world. jbhifi.com.au 10APRIL 2026GAMINGFEATURE visit jbhifi .com.au/stackLIFE IS FORLIFE IS FOR LIVING!LIVING!IF YOU LIKE THIS, YOU’LL LOVE THESE:Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Miitopia, Hello Kitty Island AdventureTomodachi Life: Living the Dreamis out Apr 16Tomodachi FORMAT: GENRE: Simulation MULTIPLAYER: NoGROUND ZEROIn 1985, game designer/programmer David Crane, Activision cofounder and creator of Pitfall!, unleashed Little Computer People. • What prompted Tribute to get involved in creating a Marvel game?I think we have a lot of Marvel fans here at Tribute, myself included. I grew up watching the cartoons – Spider-Man, X-Men – and I also grew up reading some comic books, and now with the shows and all the movies. I've been a fan since as far back as I can remember. How was it working with Marvel? Our relationship is really good. There was a lot of collaboration between Marvel and Tribute. Their feedback was fantastic and it was just a great partnership and a great fi t for a beat ’em up game. Everything was made in collaboration with Marvel. Every character design was reviewed and reworked to make sure that it works. It stays on brand with Marvel and it also works well within the game. How would you describe the game?We bring that old-school retro feel, but modernised for today's audience. I think the beat ’em up is a genre that Marvel hasn't really touched in a long while, so bringing that experience to new players is fantastic. I think we have a lot of new characters, or characters that don't really get the spotlight that often, that we'd like to introduce to new players as well. How did you decide upon the initial 15 main character designs? Our main throughline for the character designs was really a blast from the past, from the ’90s mixed with a cartoony style. Most of our inspiration comes from the comic books, really old school comic books, and trying to fi nd some designs in there that adapt well to pixel art, because that's what we're known for. How does character selection work? You can choose two characters, and those two characters will really affect how the game is played. So, you can go more strategic, choosing a character that can fl y and a character on the ground, or a melee character and a ranged character. But you can also choose characters that you prefer and recreate those classic team-ups that you saw in the comics or in the cartoons or movies from Marvel as well. What are your personal favourite characters in Marvel Cosmic Invasion? My favourites include She-Hulk and Rocket Raccoon. She-Hulk because she's just a massive character that can throw enemies around and chain some insane combos.Rocket Raccoon because he's an agent of chaos. Every time you throw a grenade, it's randomised, so you don't know what you're going to get. He's really quick – he can do jump attacks that can combo easily between different enemies. So, both really have something a bit more unique that I like. What sort of environments can we expect to fi ght in?There are a lot of different environments to explore. We decided to expand on the comic book and add a few different environments, most notably Marvel's New York City, Wakanda, Genosha, Savage Land… They’re all places on Earth, but also the story takes you to the cosmos, so you'll move on to the Blue Area of the Moon and then Klyntar, Asgard, and a bunch of different places in the cosmos.Ultimately, what was your main goal in making Marvel Cosmic Invasion?Obviously, we wanted to build on Marvel's legacy with arcade games. And you can see that with our retro pixel art style, but we wanted to infuse it with some modern game design as well. It's a really fun game to pick up and play if you have no experience at all. But if you are a seasoned player, it's really something that you can go deep with the strategic aspects as well. So, our goal was really to try to make the experience as accessible as we could, and to make it an experience that you can share with your friends and family, whether online or on your couch at home. • Xenoblade fans rejoice, for this month sees the arrival of Xenoblade Chronicles X: Defi nitive Edition - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, bringing all the established action along with a bunch of quality bumps to Nintendo’s red-hot latest console. Heres a taste of what to look forward to. Words Amy FlowerWhat was new on the Switch port? The original 2015 game was a Nintendo Wii U exclusive that made extensive use of that console’s gamepad. As such, the journey to the Switch – and now Switch 2 – sees gameplay tweaked accordingly, with a special menu that allows easy access to features, while other UI functions now appear on the main screen.Beyond such practical changes, when updating for the Switch the developers also grabbed the opportunity to bring enhanced visuals to the party, including textures and character models, and they look an absolute treat. Plus, four new characters joined the fray in Neilnail, Liesel, Ga Jiarg, and Al, and two new Skells – the exoskeleton mechs used to get around the planet Mira – in Hraesvelg and Ares Prime. Speaking of characters, a welcome new addition was the ability to change party members on the fl y via a menu, as well as allotting EXP to characters that aren’t in the currently active party. This injection of newness tied in with additions that were made to the story, with a narrative that expanded upon the post-credits scene of the original, featuring Lao Huang and a mysterious hooded fi gure.A new mechanic called Quick Recast, attached to the ‘Y’ button, sped up cooldowns for Arts. Coupled with a gauge, there’s no spamming it, but it certainly comes in handy in tight battles.Fans also rejoiced at improved tracking, which took most of the guesswork out of navigating quests, as well as an easing up of the ability to gain those precious Af nity Points.Interestingly, the BLADE levels of the original were completely removed from existence. But while that functionality was taken away, we welcomed autosave. That would be our preference any day! All these improvements expanded upon the base game, which saw the return of popular co-operative multiplayer functions such as Global Nemesis Battles. What does the Switch 2 version deliver? While no new game content has been added to this Switch 2 upgrade – Nintendo did a pretty good job of delivering a whole swathe of it when unleashing the Switch version - there are signifi cant quality of life improvements.Aiming to harness the additional power of the Switch 2, players can now look forward to the game running at upscaled 4K resolution on compatible televisions. The frame rate has also received a signifi cant bump, now targeting 60fps in 4K over the original 30 at 1080p, which has the knockon effect of improving the game’s responsiveness. Graphics have also received further attention from their original Switch upgrade, with improved textures on everything from characters to the environments in which they roam, as well as some fabulous new lighting effects. Those who play in handheld mode don’t miss out, with the game now targeting 60fps in 1080p, offering a signifi cant visual upgrade on the Switch version. So, get ready to head back into 2054 and do your best to save humanity – as always, we’re counting on you! jbhifi.com.au 14APRIL 2026GAMINGFEATURE visit jbhifi .com.au/stackWELCOMEtoSKELL!IF YOU LIKE THIS, YOU’LL LOVE THESE:The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, Live a Live ,Ys X: Proud Nordics – Deluxe EditionXenoblade Chronicles X: Defi nitive Edition – Nintendo Switch 2 Editionis out Apr 16Xenoblade FORMAT: GENRE: Action RPG MULTIPLAYER: YesXenoplayedThe game’s soundtrack was crafted by noted anime composer Hiroyuki Sawano, whose credits include Attack on Titan and Mobile Suit Gundam. • Razer has a reputation for greatness amongst serious gamers, and theirViper mouse is the choice of many a champion. The Razer Viper V4 Pro isnow with us, and it delivers a raft of improvements over its predecessor. Words Amy FlowerWeight for it!This latest evolution of the Viper continues the mouse’s legendary ultra-lightweight design, even managing to shave another fi ve grams off the heft of its predecessor via structural optimisation – it now weighs in at a mere 49 grams (black) and 50 grams (white). The outsideIt may weigh next to nothing, but the Viper V4 Pro is certainly no lightweight in the features department, still delivering an exciting set of top-of-the-line specs. The right-handed symmetrical design introduced with the V3 remains, still perfectly suited for both claw and fi ngertip grip styles – and its super-comfortable smooth-touch fi nish still impresses. Meanwhile, fi nger grooves on the buttons provide excellent grip, while the two side buttons are perfectly placed for accessibility. Large 100% PTFE mouse feet glide like a breeze and maintain accuracy across many different surfaces. The scroll wheel has also been updated. The latest in Razer’s optical technology has been implemented, delivering a claimed 3.3x higher durability than old school mechanical wheels, zero missed inputs or accidental movements, and continued top grade performance throughout its life. The insideBut it’s on the inside where the biggest changes have been introduced. Razer has upgraded their already impressive gen-2 Focus Pro 35K optical sensor signifi cantly, by introducing the gen-3 Focus Pro 50K optical sensor. This newest of sensors allows granular adjustments to DPI and more to suit anybody’s play style, delivering up to 99.8% resolution accuracy. With 50,000 DPI sensitivity, an impressive max speed of 930 IPS (inches per second), and a maximum acceleration of 90 G (that’s how quickly a sensor can track fast movements), you’re really playing with power.Continuing the internal upgrades, Razers latest gen-4 optical switches – which work via light rather than metal contacts – promise a whopping 100 million click life cycle, with reassuring tactile feedback, plus zero bounce to prevent those annoying accidental double clicks.Ready! As far as connectivity goes, the Razer Viper V4 Pro has you covered, whether you prefer wired or wireless play. Gen-2 Razer Hyperspeed wireless connectivity offers up to almost double that of its predecessor at 1000Hz – a huge 180 hours – and up to more than double the V3 Pro at 8000Hz, with an impressive 45 hours.Razer’s Hyperspeed gen-2 promises a 0.204ms response time, meaning near instant precision, and low motion latency – more performance for the player! It all comes together via the latest advance in Razers dongle, an attractive little domed critter, connected via a supplied USB cable and designed to stay put when placed, with improved antenna strength for added reliability, and three handy LED status indicators for connectivity status, battery life, and polling rate.Set!The key to setting up your Razer Viper V4 Pro just exactly how you want it is Razers nifty Synapse Web browser-based confi guration platform, which is easily accessible online without needing to install any special software. It’s ready and waiting for on-the-fl y adjustments, via an intuitive interface that provides access to every setting from DPI sensitivity and polling rates to key mappings and onboard profi les.Go!A popular tool of the trade for pro esports gamers for many years now, this latest iteration of the Viper comes to us following extensive testing amongst elite pros, including fi ve-time League of Legends champion Lee “Faker” Sang-Hyeok. • ANACONDA THE HISS-TERICAL RETURNMOVIEFEATURE visit jbhifi .com.au/stackAnaconda was a star-studded creature feature in 1997, with Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Luke Wilson, Eric Stoltz, and Jon Voight rounding out the cast. It proved to be something of a sleeper hit, eventually finding its audience on home video. This new Anaconda is not a remake or a reboot, but an entirely new comedy adventure about two mates who idolise that 1997 movie.Jack Black and Paul Rudd play friends who travel to the Amazon rainforest to fulfil their childhood dream of remaking Anaconda. They are joined by Steve Zahn, Thandiwe Newton, Daniela Melchior, and Selton Mello as their hapless entourage.“We thought it would be a fun and novel way to attack IP-driven films, by making a movie about a group of friends trying to make a low budget, IP-driven film,” says director Tom Gormican.Anaconda became a great vehicle to put the characters’ lives in danger, while they put their dream of making a movie into motion. And we were fans of the fun insanity of the original film.Any movie that goes meta like this is bound to raise concern amongst moviegoers, but there is reassurance here given Gormican and co-writer Kevin Ettens previous, equally meta outing in the brilliant Nicolas Cage romp The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.“The script for Anaconda was funny and crazy, and I was excited to work with Tom Gormican and his brain, because The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent was one of my favourite films, admits Jack Black. And Paul Rudd was attached! I was like, ‘I want to party with these dudes!’ This was a deck full of aces.Gormican hopes the film’s themes will resonate with audiences, noting “Everybody has a thing they’ve always wanted to do. And very few of us ever actually try to do it. For our heroes, it’s a childhood dream of making a movie – but the drive comes from a realisation that it’s now or never.Glenn CochraneSAVAGE SURVIVAL28 YEARS LATER:THE BONE TEMPLEAfter all those years of silence, their gnarly post-apocalyptic story has suddenly returned with a fury.Last year they returned with 28 Years Later, delivering one of the year’s best horror movies. Now, less than a year later, the story continues with The Bone Temple, a critically acclaimed and arguably even better follow-up that pushes all sorts of envelopes.Directing the latest instalment is Nia DaCosta, whose praises Boyle sings. “Nia GENRE: Action comedy RUN TIME: 1h 40mAnacondais out Apr 8AnacondaGENRE: Horror RUN TIME: 1h 50minto motion. Nearly 30 years after squeezing audiences, the cult creature feature Anacondasheds its skin for an all-new meta revival.Jack Blackand Paul Ruddwas the perfect choice to direct The Bone Temple. Alex Garland and I had long been fans of her reimagining of Candymanand recognised that Nia has serious horror chops, and a genuine love for the original 28 Days Later. She honours what fans love about the franchise while making the new film her own, taking the series into even darker, more intense areas.Picking up precisely where 28 Years Laterended, the new movie wades into the darkest recesses of the genre, depicting a sinister, depraved, and often repulsive side of mankind in a new world order.Shifting the horror away from the infected zombie-like creatures of previous instalments, The Bone Temple chronicles the “Jimmys”, a violent, sadistic, manipulative, Satan-worshipping gang led by Jimmy Crystal (Jack O’Connell).O’Connell describes the character as “quite eccentric, in his twisted gaiety.adding As Jimmy sees it, evil has prevailed in the world, and hes eulogised that through all the bad stuff in the Bible. Jimmy was obviously aware of the Bible because his dad was a vicar, but that’s all become inverted, through the new norm of the world they live in, which is marked by darkness, death, zombies, mauling people, and jungle law. It’s survival of the fittest. With Ralph Fiennes returning as the eccentric survivalist Dr Ian Kelson, Alfie Williams as Spike, and Chi Lewis-Parry as the zombie everyone’s talking about, Sampson, the cast is stacked and the scene is set for one of the most jaw-dropping and polarising horror films in recent memory. • If Hugh Jackman has been singing his entire adult life, then he was unprepared to meet his match in Kate Hudson. Together, they make beautiful harmony in Song Sung Blue, based on two real-life down-on-their-luck musicians whose joyous Neil Diamond tribute band proved it's never too late to find love and follow your dreams.“We really bonded as people, as actors,Jackman, 57, says of his co-star who received a 'Best Supporting Actress' Oscar nod for her role.“But there was one day when we were sitting on the couch, and they just put a mic in front of us and recorded us – and that's when I got the chills; that’s when I knew, musically, we would blend.Likewise Hudson knew their beautiful tear-jerking duets would work perfectly on film. “The studio is a very vulnerable place because they're picking up everything from your voice. And as artists, you don’t like certain things, but you have to try things and be really open. So, it was a great entry point for us to break open a bit and be vulnerable with each other. The real Neil Diamond also opened his door to the Australian actor ahead of production.“You don't see a lot of commercials using Neil’s songs. He doesn't give it up easily, but he just loved this story,” says Jackman. “And so I said to him. 'Oh, I'd love to come over for a cuppa and talk about it'. This is a very Australian thing, by the way!“So, we had dinner and then the karaoke machine came out, and I was just like, 'Please, someone video this!' And we did, and his first song was: I Dreamed a Dream. Then we sang Canada, Falling in Love with You and Sweet Caroline. And at one point he put his arm around me and kissed the top of my head. JESSIE BUCKLEY SOARS IN HAMNETBorn in Ireland, the eldest of five, her family were even flown out for the shining moment when their big sister would become the first ever Irish actress to take home the 'Best Actress' Oscar for her passionate portrayal of Agnes, aka Mrs Shakespeare. And even if her screen partner – Paul Mescal as the Bard himself - has been passed up for awards for his own role, then Buckley is the first to admit that she couldn’t have done it without him.“I love that man. I've been very lucky to work with great partners in my life, and I think he might be the best,” she says.“You know, the chemistry is just there. I knew Paul a little bit. I knew his work. I respected him so much. But when we did our first chemistry read, what was so exciting was the possibility, there was just a crackle there and immediate trust,” says Buckley, who currently has an altogether different screen husband with Christian Bales Frankenstein in The Bride!.And it's rare that you meet somebody like that, and it's rare that you meet a male co-lead like that, where you think, 'I'm going to meet you so many times throughout my life, and we're going to have growth together'.In common with millions of readers, Buckley was enchanted by Maggie O’Farrell’s 2020 Hamnet best-seller, about William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes, and their son Hamnet dying, aged 11, from the bubonic plague. The fictionalised story explores the profound grief experienced by his parents, and the impact of this loss on their family and on Shakespeare's choice to write Hamlet.Moved to tears after reading Chloe’s script, Buckley recalls, “I was like ‘This is the woman I’ve been looking for. With the fi lm now returning to Blu-ray and DVD, we put a few questions to the director. How do you feel about Wer 14 years after its release?I’m incredibly proud of Wer. We really wanted to do something different within the genre and I think we achieved that. Over time, though, it’s been really gratifying to see the movie continue to build a following and find its audience. What were some of your influences when developing the movie?District 9 was a big influence in how its narrative blended conventional coverage and real-world cameras, creating a grounded feel without the restrictions of pure found footage.Looking back, what do you think Werdoes differently than other werewolf movies? Most werewolf films lean into the supernatural mythology of a man turning into a beast. Our approach was to ask whether those legends might have originated from something more grounded in reality. If you were to make Wernow, would you do anything differently?Honestly, I’m not sure I would change much. Theres a rawness to the film that I really like. If anything, I think we could have leaned a little more into a controlled, cinematic style for the main camera while still keeping the grounded realism that defines the movie. What are some of your favourite werewolf movies? An American Werewolf in London is obviously a classic and still one of the most unforgettable mash-ups of horror, character, and dark humour. I’ve always loved Wolfen and The Howling. And I’m a big fan of Ginger Snaps. You’re now working on Orphans. What can you tell us about the movie?I can’t say too much about it yet, but it continues to explore Leena Klammer as a character. It leans into the twisted psychology and dark humour introduced in Orphan: First Kill but in fresh and unexpected ways. I can’t wait for audiences to see where we take the story. I was about seven; the album had been out quite a few years, but I was obsessed with Tina and John Williamson at the time. A funny combination looking back. I bought the album from somewhere in Hay NSW, with money I’d saved up from doing little jobs for Mum – cleaning the car, mowing the lawn, etc.I was very excited to show all of my cousins and play it over and over in the car on long drives with Mum and my brother Luke. I don’t have that album anymore on cassette and haven’t listened to it for a while, but I still have enormous admiration for Tina Turner.WILLIAM CRIGHTON#1MY FIRSTALBUMColonial Driftby William Crighton is out now via ABC/RocketIn the hotseat is Aussie star BAKER BOY, who is touring this month.Five words to describe yourself:Proud, Blak, Deadly, Yolŋu Boy.Your all-time favourite album?J. Coles The Off-Season.What did your most memorable school report say?Honestly, I don’t think I ever read it! But I always did good in school… probably said I was annoying, though. What’s an early, cherished music memory? One of my earliest and most cherished memories is sitting around the campfi re with my dad as he played his guitar. There was always something magical about those moments and where I understood the power of music to bring people together and tell stories that stick with you for a lifetime.Which recent album do you currently have on repeat?STACKPhoto credit: Julieanne CrightonLately I’ve had Unreal, Unearth; Unending by Hozier on repeat. His storytelling and soulful voice are always captivating, but this album feels especially immersive. The perfect blend of folk, pop, and poetic lyricism creates such a rich listening experience that I keep coming back to. Each song offers something new to appreciate. My favorite song off the album being Abstract (Psychopomp).What’s your all-time favourite album and why?My favourite all-time album is Sounds Good Feels Good by 5 Seconds of Summer. This album stands out to me because of its raw emotion, powerful lyrics, and the way it perfectly encapsulates the highs and lows of youth. It’s the kind of album that is still as impactful to me as the very fi rst listen. My favourite song being Outer Space/Carry on.Do you have a vinyl collection? If so, how did it begin, and expand?Yes, I’ve built up a collection of over 100 records in the past year. It all started with Only by the Night by Kings of Leon, which was my fi rst vinyl and sparked my love for collecting. Working at JB Hi-Fi has really reignited my passion for music and specifi cally physical media. Recently I also got all of my Pop’s old ‘70’s records, which has been an amazing way to connect with music that he loved and hear his stories of when he purchased them. What do you enjoy most about working in music at JB?What I love most about working in music at JB is being surrounded by people who share my passion for music. Getting to talk about albums, recommend artists, and help people discover their next favourite song never feels like work – it’s something I genuinely enjoy. There is also a thrill in seeing someone’s excitement when they fi nd exactly what they were looking for or when they take a chance on a new release based on a reccomendation. Being a part of a space that keeps music alive in a physical format, where fans can connect with it beyond streaming makes the job even more rewarding.DJANDJAYby Baker Boy is out now via IslandAPRILWhat would be your Hard Quiz expert subject?I don’t know, maybe One Pieceanime.Song you wish you’d written?Hanumankind’s Big Dawgs. If you weren’t a rock star, what would you be?I was a dancer before I was a musician, so probably still that.Last album you bought?50 Cent – The Massacre. I got it second-hand from Tower Records in Shibuya when I was over there a few months ago. What’s the most ridiculous item you’ve ever put on your rider?Honestly, nothing really; I’m not that guy. I do get boiled eggs, which everyone thinks is hilarious, but I eat them, so not that ridiculous!Your funeral song?Akatsuki – the theme song from Naruto Shippuden.Happiness is…Home with my dog and partner and ideally eating mud crab.st258_030_MUSIC-Intro2-PROOFED-AF.indd 1st258_030_MUSIC-Intro2-PROOFED-AF.indd 1 20/3/2026 4:30 pm20/3/2026 4:30 pm

The result is the power-packed album House of Cards.Songwriter Joel Birch has always been very open with the band’s legion of fans. REBUILTTOY STORYOne simple chart fact shows how much we love Foo Fighters. The band has had nine chart-topping albums in Australia. At home in America? Two.“We have always had a spicy love affair with our friends in New Zealand and Australia, making it a point at least once every album cycle to suffer the 15-hour flight and pay a visit,” Dave Grohl pointed out in his best-selling book The Storyteller. And it’s always more than worth it... exploring this heavenly territory, making lifelong friends, and rocking the f-ck out of every venue we set foot in.The band even has a favourite Aussie-inspired celebration.“The Foo Fighters have one very peculiar indulgence that we request every now and then for special occasions: KFC and champagne,Dave smiles.“This tasty combination is something we inadvertently discovered on a tour of Australia. The band is now celebrating Your Favorite Toy, the first Foo Fighters album to feature drummer Ilan Rubin.Dave Grohl talked about goodbyes when Foo Fighters became the first international band to do a stadium show in Australia after the COVID pandemic. “I don’t like saying goodbye to people,Dave told the Geelong crowd. “Because the way we work is we always f-cking come back, because that’s what we do... but I would like to dedicate this last song [Everlong] to an old friend who’s not here with us tonight. In order to feel extreme happiness, you have to know extreme sadness. To Love Somebody followed Die Happy, a song about “the danger in loving someone so much you’d do anything for them”.“So, hit the gas,” Holly sings. “I want it fast, want it reckless. This album was shaped by the passing of his partner’s mother, who died of pancreatic cancer. “There are all these conflicting things, and you are analysing your own life and the timespan of it. You are questioning how you choose to spend your time alive. The resultant record is “very reflective of where rewired my brain and outlook on life. With the help of producers Dann Hume and Chris Collins, Matt is shooting for tracks that are timeless.“There are songs that everyone is losing their sh-t over right now,” he points out, “that you probably can’t listen to again in a year; my goal is beyond that timeframe.“So, tell all your big ideas,” he sings on the record. “We could make it real. And that’s exactly what he has done on Tragic Magic. It’s about being struck by a bolt of desire and building up the courage to put language to that feeling, to make it real.”CHARLEY The Chronicles of a Serial Idealist UNIVERSALThis is the debut album for Sydney pop artist Charley, who recently took out the ‘Emerging Global Songwriter Award’ at the Vanda & Young Songwriting Competition for the song Man on the Moon, which is featured here. “This record is about fi nding hope in the mess,” she says. “Being honest, refl ective, and learning to let go. These songs circle the same patterns of romanticising and repetition, which is how I landed on the idea of a ‘serial idealist.’”JAMES BLUNDELLPatience Wins MGMJames Blundell, one of the greats of Australian country music, remains a fi ne storyteller. “After four decades in music, I still believe the best stories come from real life,” he says. Patience Wins is about the endurance and courage people show every day.” The album features a very special guest – Little Feat’s Billy Payne on Hammond, piano, and keys.A$AP ROCKYDon’t Be Dumb SONYAmerican rapper A$AP Rocky has delivered one of the titles of the year with his fourth album: Don’t Be Dumb. Featuring a stack of guests – including Gorillaz, Doechii, Jessica Pratt, and will.i.am - the record has already hit number one in the US, becoming the artist’s third chart-topper.CHARLEY CROCKETTAge of the Ram UNIVERSALAge of the Ram is the 16th studio album for American country star Charley Crockett, who isn’t afraid to speak his mind. Earlier this year, he called President Trump a “grifter” and said that Elon Musk should be deported. Following the fi ctional character of Billy McClane, this is the third and fi nal part of his “Sagebrush Trilogy”, which started with last year’s Lonesome Drifter. It was co-produced by Shooter Jennings, the son of country legend Waylon Jennings.JESSIE WARESuperbloom UNIVERSALSuperbloom is the sixth studio album for English pop star Jessie Ware. She said the fi rst single, I Could Get Used to This, was “the opening statement of a new era”. Citing Grace Jones, Whitney Houston, and Barbra Streisand as infl uences, she added: “While I love dance music, I wanted to dig deeper with this record, to connect with real relationships and appreciate the love I have, and the fear I have of losing it.”BRUCE HORNSBYIndigo Park ROCKETForty years after he broke big with The Way It Is, Bruce Hornsby has delivered a new album of jazzy pop. “It’s just an old bastard looking back,” he smiles. “To be honest, I’ve found a way, a path to grow old gracefully, with help from some newborn friends of mine.” Bruce and his band, The Noisemakers, collaborated with Bonnie Raitt, legendary bass player Pino Palladino, and two late-great members of the Grateful Dead, Bob Weir and Robert Hunter.CORROSION OF CONFORMITYGood God/Baad Man INERTIAAmerican metal band Corrosion of Conformity have been rocking since 1982 but didn’t hit the Australian charts until their most recent album, 2018’s No Cross No Crown. Their 11th studio album, a double, is the fi rst since the passing of drummer Reed Mullin. His place has been fi lled by Stanton Moore, who played on C.O.C’s 2005 album In the Arms of God. Singer Pepper Keenan explains that “each album is its own tiny universe and has its own identity. Good Godleans toward the heavier/pissed end of the spectrum. Baad Manis more on the throwdown rock scope.”JOE JACKSONHope and Fury ROCKETForty-seven years after his fi rst album, Joe Jackson still looks – and sounds - sharp. “Hello cruel world,” he sings on Hope and Fury, his 22nd studio album, his fi rst rock record in seven years. “I’m not going away, so I might as well have my say.” Recorded in New York and Berlin, Hope and Fury is trademark Joe Jackson, who’s had eight Top 40 albums in Australia. King’ssong The Thrill Is Gone. While the bulkof the material was written by Don Henley and Glenn Frey, who alternated on lead vocals, the most intriguing track is Leadons instrumental Journey of the Sorcerer, which was later used as the theme for Douglas AdamsThe Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy radio series, produced by the BBC in 1978.This album saw Leadon leave the band, to be replaced by former James Gang guitarist/sing-er/songwriter Joe Walsh for the EaglesHotelCalifornia album, which is widely regarded as the band’s masterpiece.Radio legend Billy Pinnell presents Billy Pinnell’s Musical Moments on YouTube.WHAT’S OUT THIS MONTH?EAGLESOne of These NightsOne of These Nights INERTIAINERTIAComing in Coming in MAYMAYMELANIE CSweat (May 1)TORI AMOSIn Times of Dragons (May 1)YUNGBLUDIdols II (May 15)JOE PERNICESunny, I Was Wrong MGMSunny, I Was Wrong is the fourth solo album for America’s Joe Pernice, his fi rst since his Barry Manilow celebration, Could It Be Magic. The record features some cool collaborations: Deep into the Dawn(Aimee Mann), It Won’t Be Me (Rodney Crowell), I’d Rather Look Away (Teenage Fanclub’s Norman Blake) and It Got Away from Me (Jimmy Webb).JULIA CUMMINGJulia INERTIAThis is the debut solo album for Julia Cumming, the lead singer of Brooklyn band Sunfl ower Bean. Highlighting her major infl uences – Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon, and Brian Wilson - Julia says: “One of my main goals with this record was for it to sound fun, not morose. It’s the ultimate anti-cool album. It’s a joyous space for the misfi ts, and in particular, an album for girls like me, the ones who never t into a neat little box. I want this record to be a place where those girls can fi nd solace.” As she declares in My Life, “I sing these words for me... to drown you out.” KNEECAPFenian INERTIAThis Irish hip-hop trio have called their third album “a considered response to those who tried to silence us”. The title is a reference to the warriors in Irish folklore; it was also later used as a derogatory term for the Irish. “Now we’re using it to name everyone speaking truth to power.” Kneecap are loud and proud. As they declare, “The Paddies are back.”MEGHAN TRAINORToy with Me SONYAmerica’s Meghan Trainor has packed a lot into the last decade, winning a Grammy for ‘Best New Artist’, topping the charts with All About That Bass, and working as a judge on Australian Idol and The Voice in the UK. Toy with Me is her seventh studio set, and she says it “feels like the most honest and fearless I’ve ever been – it’s all about self-confi dence, freedom and learning how to meet people where they are at.I’m learning to shake off negativity, choosing joy, and living life my way – because at this point in my life and career, I’m ready to be done worrying about pleasing everyone.”THE MILK CARTON KIDSLost Cause Lover Fool ROCKETMuch-loved folk duo The Milk Carton Kids – Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan - are releasing their seventh studio album, which is lled with their trademark intimate indie pop fi lled with heavenly harmonies. “Each song takes a single moment, sometimes examined with microscopic closeness and sometimes viewed from a great distance, and lets it expand until it becomes an entire world,” Pattengale explains. “By enlarging small feelings until they’re inhabitable, the record looks for eternity not in the sweeping or monumental, but in the intimate specifi cs that usually pass too quickly to notice.”RINGO STARRLong Long Road UNIVERSALRingo Starr’s collaboration with T Bone Burnett continues to bear fruit, with Long Long Road, his third country album, another sparkling collection of Americana. Ringo might be 85, and he has been on a long, long road, but his music still conjures joy. Alongside a stack of originals, the record features a cover of a Carl Perkins gem I Don’t See Me in Your Eyes Anymore. The album also features guest appearances from Billy Strings, Sheryl Crow, St. Vincent, Molly Tuttle, and Sarah Jarosz.SKINDREDYou Got This INERTIASkindred’s Can I Get A is one of the feel-good hits of the year. It tackles a serious subject – an autobiographical look at childhood poverty and family hardship - but the Welsh ragga metal band manages to inject some crowd-pleasing “woops-woops” and a joyous pop sound that will transport you back to the ’80s. Skindred, who started in 1998, have had four Top 40 albums in the UK, but are yet to break big here.THUNDERCATDistracted INERTIAStephen Lee Bruner is an American bass player, producer and singer who’s better known as Thundercat. Distracted is his fi fth solo album and it features No More Lies, a deliciously smooth and funky collaboration with Australia’s Tame Impala. And A$AP Rocky pops up on Funny Friends.TRUCKFIGHTERSMasterfl ow MGMAs The Hives revealed, Sweden can rock. Truckfi ghters are a Swedish stoner rock band and this is their sixth studio album, their rst in ten years. The grooves are big, the guitars are fuzzy, and the sound is gloriously hypnotic. Overall, they come across much like the Swedish version of Tumbleweed.ZAYNKonnakol UNIVERSALKonnakol is the fi fth solo album for One Direction’s Zayn Malik. The cover image blurs the singer’s face with a snow leopard, as a nod to how much his Asian heritage has shaped the record. “I have always drawn on my heritage for inspiration since I fi rst started making my own music,” Zayn explains. “This album is a development of that understanding, knowing more now than ever, who I am, where I come from and where I intend to go.” And if you’re wondering about the title, “konnakol” is the art of performing percussive sounds vocally in South Indian Carnatic music.WHAT’S OUT THIS MONTH?EAGLESBILY’S PICKBILY’S PICKst258_038-039_MUSIC-WhatsOutThisMonth-02-PROOFED-AF.indd 2st258_038-039_MUSIC-WhatsOutThisMonth-02-PROOFED-AF.indd 2 20/3/2026 4:38 pm20/3/2026 4:38 pm

  • Gone are the days of boiling baby bottles on the stove or relying on low-res monitors to check on baby. Now tech is making life just that little bit easier for parents of newborns.Words Bec SummerWhile sitting in a food court recently, we overheard a conversation at an adjacent table. An expectant mother was batting away suggestions of how hard life would be when the newborn arrived.“I’m not bothered about sleep deprivation,” the mother replied. “I barely sleep now, so I’ll be fi ne.We stared into our burrito, casting our mind back to those early years of parenthood, smiled, and whispered, “Good luck!”The fact is, of course, nothing can prepare you for the arrival of your fi rstborn. Between the sleep deprivation, exploding nappies, and the general anxiety of not actually knowing what to do as a new parent, you’ll be constantly wondering what on earth you did with your time before baby arrived. However, in the smart home space, technology has evolved to ease the stress of day-to-day living. Automated support is now on hand to assist parents navigating the tricky newborn stage. So, what’s out there? There was a time when electric breast pumps were considered the pinnacle of baby tech. And rightly so. These are still widely used and still widely appreciated. But as consumer tech evolved from step counters on the wrist to smart home hubs that control the home with voice commands, the baby space would inevitably follow suit.Search the internet, and you can fi nd practically anything to assist in the journey. Robot nannies, AI-driven digital babies for preparing parents, and even ‘gas relievers’ deployed like a human exhaust pipe are all readily available. But if you sift through the absurd, there are some truly ingenious devices that are worth a closer look.Smart bassinets and cribsThese beds use sensors to detect when a baby stirs from sleep or cries. They can automatically vibrate, rock or play white noise to help soothe the baby back to sleep.jbhifi.com.au 4APRIL 2026TECHFEATURE visit jbhifi .com.au/stackvisit jbhifi .com.au/stackst258_105-099_TECH-Baby Feature-PROOFED-AF.indd 1st258_105-099_TECH-Baby Feature-PROOFED-AF.indd 1 20/3/2026 6:49 pm20/3/2026 6:49 pm

Hearing that sentence will cause instant anxiety if your little one likes to party when it’s night-night time. Most of us have the stories of driving around in the dead of night for two hours straight, or marching on the spot for a thousand steps, just so baby sleeps. Solutions come thick and thin from those around you, from the helpful to the truly absurd (doing lunges for an hour might be good for babs, but you won’t be able to walk the following day). All babies and family situations are different, so what works for you might not work for somebody else. However, there are some tried and tested formulas worth trying before you head off to sleep school.continuedThe The sleep sleep warswars1. Follow a simple routineNewborns don’t follow strict schedules, but a consistent pattern helps. A short wind-down – feed, nappy change, cuddle - signals that sleep is coming.2. Don’t fear noiseTotal silence isn’t necessary. Gentle background noise (like white noise) can help babies settle and stay asleep longer.3. Watch for wake windowsOvertired babies are harder to settle. Newborns typically stay awake for45–90 minutesbefore needing sleep again – miss that window, and things can become trickier.4. Create a sleep-friendly spaceA dim, calm environment helps signal nighttime. Keep the room comfortable, reduce stimulation, and avoid bright lights during night wakes.5. Accept that broken sleep is normalNewborn sleep is unpredictable. Frequent waking for feeds is completely normal in the early weeks, so flexibility (and patience) is key.Video baby monitorsWhile the concept has been around since the ‘90s, video baby monitors now include high-definition cameras, night vision, and AI to detect movement, crying, or if baby’s face is covered, and some can even analyse sleep patterns, reporting back with phone alerts to parents.Wearable health trackersSoft wearable devices, such as bands or socks, can monitor everything from heart rate to sleep cycles. If something is awry, the parent is alerted.Wearable breast pumpYou can never have enough hands in the quest to multitask, and a wearable breast pump is the perfect tool to help with the daily juggle.Automatic sterilisersYou’ll undoubtedly hear the parenting veterans say, “When I was a mum, we had to boil everything on the stove,” but thankfully, technology has moved on.st258_105-099_TECH-Baby Feature-PROOFED-AF.indd 3st258_105-099_TECH-Baby Feature-PROOFED-AF.indd 3 20/3/2026 6:49 pm20/3/2026 6:49 pm

The Mesopotamian baby rattleIn the early 20th century, archaeologists uncovered hollow clay rattles fi lled with small pebbles for sound, small enough for a baby’s hand, dating from 3000 BCE. It just shows that parents from 5000 years ago were thinking about the same things as modern parents do.2. The mechanical cradleYes, even way back in the 1700s, inventors were busy developing devices to help babies get to – and stay - asleep. Rocking cradle bases – some even with a foot mechanism for the ultimate in multi-tasking - date back to the 17th and 18th centuries.3. Glass bottlesFirst documented in the mid-18th century and marketed under names like ‘Little Cherub’ and ‘Mummies Darling’, Integration Sign me up… to the timesIt makes sense to employ everything you can to make life easier for when baby eventually comes home. The good news is you don’t have to look very far to get started. Here’s our easy buying guide to ensure you’re on the right path and that you buy exactly what you need. Solve a problemStart small and choose the essentials. Opt for a baby monitor, a UV steriliser, and maybe a wearable breast pump. When baby arrives, then you can expand depending on your needs.Keep to a budgetLike any new investment, work on an initial budget and stick to it. You’ll fi nd a device for every situation, and it’s easy to get carried away, but stay on course.Prioritise safetySteer clear of cheap-and-cheerful retail points and opt for brands with a solid reputation. Safety and reliability always come fi rstDon’t double up on featuresMany devices overlap (monitoring, white noise, tracking etc). One good product can often replace two or three.Battery lifeBattery life is a consideration. If the device works on a rechargeable battery, the longer the life, the better. You will 100% forget to charge it at some point.Check privacy and securitySome baby tech devices connect to the internet so ensure the devices use encryption, allow password changes, get fi rmware updates, and let you control remote access.Parenting through the ages The eternal quest for devices to make bearing children easier goes back to the dawn of time. Archaeologists have found evidence of early teething tools, animal-skin papooses, and even the use of herbal remedies, such as mild sedatives.the glass bottles featured a connected rubber tube that proved to be an ideal breeding ground for bacteria!4. Electronic baby monitorsWhere once you needed a sharp ear to hear the mumblings of a waking baby, in the 1970s, your 40-minute exhaustion nap on the couch was instantly interrupted by the audio on a baby monitor. • FLOORCARERobot vacs can vacuum – and mop - your whole home, so you don’t have to! These clever little cleaners quietly patrol your fl oors while you relax, and while they might all look similar, the tech inside can vary considerably. So, if you’re thinking about adding one to your home, heres what you need to know.Words Bec SummerROBOT VACUUMSjbhifi.com.au 18APRIL 2026TECHFEATURE visit jbhifi .com.au/stackThings to know before you buyNavigation – from random roaming to precision mappingEntry-level robot vacuums keep things simple. They move forward until they hit an obstacle, change direction, and continue cleaning until the battery runs low. Over time they’ll cover most of the oor, but the clean isn’t always the most ef cient.More advanced models take a much smarter approach with laser or 3D mapping technology. These robots scan your home and create a virtual fl oor plan, allowing them to clean in organised patterns.Mapping also allows you to set virtual boundaries, create room-specifi c cleaning zones, and avoid areas you’d prefer the robot vac to avoid – all from an app.Smarter obstacle avoidanceEarly robot vacuums were good at avoiding walls and detecting stairs, but many modern models can navigate the everyday obstacles around your home by using AI-powered cameras and sensors that can identify objects like cables, toys, shoes, or pet bowls and automatically steer around them. This means fewer interruptions and less chance of the robot getting stuck halfway through its cleaning run. Some premium models even feature retractable wheels or lifting mechanisms that help them glide over raised thresholds, rugs, or uneven surfaces, allowing them to move more easily between rooms.Vacuuming and mopping in oneRobot vacuums aren’t just about picking up dust anymore. Many new models now combine vacuuming and mopping in a single machine to tackle both dry debris and sticky messes.Instead of simply dragging a damp cloth behind the vacuum, the latest designs can include rotating mop pads or roller systems that actively scrub hard fl oors for a more thorough clean. These systems distribute water evenly to reduce streaking while lifting stubborn marks from tiles and timber oors.Worried about your carpets getting wet? Most combo models can detect the difference between hard fl oors and soft surfaces, automatically lifting the mop pads or avoiding carpeted areas altogether.Self-cleaning and low-maintenanceOne of the biggest advantages of robot vacuums is convenience, and newer models are designed to reduce maintenance as much as possible. Many now feature auto-empty docking stations that transfer the robot’s dustbin into a larger bag when it returns to recharge. You may only need to empty the station every few weeks instead of after every clean.Mopping robot vacs can also include self-cleaning systems that rinse the st258_091-089_TECH-Smalls – Robot vac quick guide-PROOFED-AF.indd 1st258_091-089_TECH-Smalls – Robot vac quick guide-PROOFED-AF.indd 1 23/3/2026 12:12 pm23/3/2026 12:12 pm

And some can even wash the mop during cleaning for more hygienic results.Tackling common vacuum frustrationsManufacturers have also focused on solving some of the everyday annoyances that come with traditional vacuuming.Hair tangling around brush rollers has always been a hassle, particularly in homes with pets or longhaired residents. Many modern robot vacuums now feature anti-tangle brush designs, such as conical rollers, angled bristles, or built-in comb systems that guide hair directly into the dustbin.Cleaning edges and corners has also improved signifi cantly. Older robots sometimes struggled along walls or in tight spaces, but newer designs use improved mapping, retractable side brushes, or extending mop pads to reach right into corners and along skirting boards for a more thorough clean.Smart home connectivityLike many modern appliances, robot vacuums have embraced smart home tech. Most models can connect to your Wi-Fi network and be controlled through a companion app, or integrated into a compatible smart home ecosystem. Many robovacs also support voice assistants for hands-free commands.Smart features can also help the robot adapt to your home over time. AI-enabled models can update their maps should furniture be moved or new obstacles appear, ensuring an ef cient and thorough clean.FLOORCAREjbhifi.com.au 20APRIL 2026TECHFEATURE visit jbhifi .com.au/stackROBOT VACUUMS Things to know before you buycontinuedCan a robot vacuum replace your regular vacuum? For many households, the answer is yes – at least for everyday cleaning.Modern robot vacuums can deliver impressive suction power, putting them in the same league as many stick vacuums. Combined with intelligent navigation, scheduled cleaning, and automated maintenance, they can easily handle daily dust, crumbs, and pet hair. While you may still want to keep a traditional vac handy for occasional deep cleaning or tricky spots, a robot vacuum can comfortably take care of day-to-day fl oor care.Perhaps the biggest benefi t of all is that you get clean fl oors without lifting a fi nger, leaving you with more leisure time while the robot does all the hard work.st258_091-089_TECH-Smalls – Robot vac quick guide-PROOFED-AF.indd 3st258_091-089_TECH-Smalls – Robot vac quick guide-PROOFED-AF.indd 3 23/3/2026 12:13 pm23/3/2026 12:13 pm

  • Todays washers and dryers are smarter, more effi cient, and packed with handy features designed to make the whole laundry process quicker and easier – and keep your clothes looking better for longer. If you’re thinking about upgrading your laundry, here are some key features worth considering.Words Bec SummerDetergent auto-dosingIt’s not hard to use too much detergent, but auto-dosing washers solve that problem by automatically measuring the right amount for every load. You simply fi ll the built-in detergent and fabric softener reservoirs and the washer weighs the load and dispenses the correct dose. The results are better cleaning performance, less detergent waste, and no more guesswork. Some machines can store enough liquid for weeks of washing, making everyday laundry that little bit easier.Steam cycles for a deeper cleanSteam is a powerful addition to modern washers and dryers. By penetrating deep into fabric fi bres, steam helps loosen dirt, dissolve detergent faster, and banish bacteria. It can also help to reduce wrinkles in clothes, making them easier to iron afterwards. The result is fresher garments and a deeper clean – particularly helpful for bedding, towels, and heavily worn items.Energy efficient heat pump dryersDryers don’t always have the best reputation when it comes to power use, but heat pump technology has changed that.Heat pump dryers recycle warm air inside the drum, extracting moisture from clothes and collecting it in a tank, cartridge, or drainage hose before reheating the air and repeating the process. This closed-loop system uses signifi cantly less energy than traditional vented dryers. These dryers operate at lower temperatures, so they’re also gentler on fabrics and help protect clothes from heat damage.Faster and more efficient cyclesModern washers and dryers are designed to save both time and energy. Quick or rapid wash programs can handle lightly soiled loads in far less time while using less water and power. Many dryers also include eco modes and smart sensors that monitor humidity and temperature in the drum, automatically adjusting the cycle to avoid over-drying. Cycles that protect your clothesDedicated cycles like delicate, hand wash, or permanent press use gentler drum movement and lower temperatures to minimise wear and tear.Cold wash settings can also help prevent colour fading and shrinkage, while appropriate drying programs reduce the risk of heat damage. Your clothes can last longer and keep their shape and colour.Smarter laundry with Wi-Fi controlMany modern washers and dryers now include smart connectivity, allowing you to control them using a smartphone app.You can start, pause, or schedule cycles remotely and receive notifi cations when a load is fi nished. Some machines can even communicate with each other, selecting the ideal drying program based on the wash cycle used.Add energy monitoring, maintenance reminders, and the ability to run cycles during off-peak electricity hours, and smart appliances can make laundry day a breeze. • As winter approaches, washing lines and drying racks won't do. If your washer and dryer are a combo, working in sync with each other, you can avoid creases, fading patterns, and that damp smell that can settle in over time. Its TurboClean360 setting can wash a 5kg load in 39 minutes, using internal spray nozzles for speedy results. Its ezDispense feature means it can auto-dose laundry detergent based on weight, with a capacity for up to 31 loads. AI wash, powered by LG's AI DD technology, can detect the weight and fabric softness of your washing load and optimise the wash cycle as needed. The dryer can detect exactly how long a load of washing will need, and running an Allergy Care Cycle can deal with dust mites. This dryer is particularly easy to install, with no need for external venting: plug it in, turn it on, and you can start drying right away. When the two are paired via an app, you can sync your drying cycle to match exactly what you just washed for the best results. The Fisher & Paykel washer provides gentle care for six distinct fi bre types and handles mixed loads with ease. Its intelligent sensors adjust your water and energy use depending on how much laundry you've loaded, and it's designed to reduce creasing on clothes that are left for a while. You can connect it through the SmartHQ app for real-time updates on your washing. The dryer in this set can also be paired to SmartHQ, so you can track your full wash/dry cycle. • As the saying goes, everything old is new again, and vintage camera designs are roaring back into focus. Let’s take a look at this resurgence and why retro vibes are suddenly all the rage in the camera space.Words Scott HockingThanks to the magic of digital technology, we’re able to see the photo we’ve just taken on a display – and simply snap another one if it isn’t quite right, or edit it to perfection. But that hasn’t stopped the resurgence of screen-free digital and fi lm cameras that recreate that retro vibe for a new generation. This new wave of retro-style cameras could have time-travelled from the late ‘70s or early ’80s. Leaning hard into nostalgia, they sport bright colours, simple designs, oversized buttons, and minimalist controls. These cameras are designed to be seen, and you’ll likely spot them dangling from wrist straps at music festivals, tucked into tote bags at weekend brunch, or passed around at parties like disposable cameras used to be. They’re playful, tactile, and refreshingly uncomplicated. The aesthetic taps straight into the same cultural current that brought vinyl records back into living rooms and fi lm photography into Instagram feeds. In a world dominated by sleek glass smartphones, a camera that looks like it belongs in your parents’ holiday photos can suddenly feel exciting again. It’s not just nostalgia for nostalgia’s sake, though. These cameras are deliberately simple – and that’s the whole point.Cameras that do less... so you enjoy morePick up one of these retro-style cameras and the fi rst thing you’ll notice is there isn’t a lot to fi gure out. No endless menus, no pro-mode settings, no editing tools, and often no display. Many models embrace a “shoot now, see later” philosophy that mirrors the experience of classic fi lm cameras. You press the shutter, trust your instincts, and move on with the moment instead of reviewing and agonising over every shot.New tech, old lookOf course, they’re not completely stuck in the past. Retro-style cameras are essentially today’s tech in yesterday’s design, so you can still fi nd modern touches such as built-in digital sensors, internal storage, or microSD support, rechargeable batteries, easy USB transfers, and simple video recording on some models. Some even include subtle modern tricks like AI-assisted exposure or colour tuning to help keep shots looking good without requiring manual adjustments.Even the digital versions of these cameras often skip the display entirely, storing photos internally so you can check them later when you connect the camera to your phone or laptop. But compared with a typical mirrorless digital or smartphone camera, they’re still charmingly low-tech – and that’s exactly the appeal. The element of mysteryIf you’ve grown up with smartphone cameras, the idea of not seeing your photo instantly might sound weird. But for anyone who jbhifi.com.au 36APRIL 2026TECHFEATURE visit jbhifi .com.au/stackyour photo instantly might sound weird. • Budget friendlyAnother advantage of retro-style cameras is that they generally cost a lot less than dedicated digital cameras (and smartphones), making them an appealing option for kids and teens. That’s a far cry from their past counterparts. Not only did you have to factor in the initial cost of the camera, but also fi lm rolls or cartridges, plus developing fees!they’ve also made photography almost too polished. HDR processing, AI smoothing, and endless fi lters and edits can make every photo look a bit generic.Retro-inspired cameras go in the other direction. Colours might be less punchy and the framing may be a little crooked, but that’s all part of the charm. Indeed, some retro-style cameras feature dedicated modes and fi lters to add a distinctive vintage fi lm look, such as analogue-inspired effects, sepia tones, and black and white. Those little quirks can add personality to your photos, make them feel spontaneous, raw and authentic, and more like a memory than a perfectly tweaked image. In an era where everyone’s camera can produce technically fl awless photos, it’s the slightly imperfect ones that can really stand out.A camera that isn’t your phoneTheres another more practical reason why people are embracing the retro camera revival – they offer a break from the smartphone.Taking photos on your phone can often lead down a rabbit hole – notifi cations, messages, social media, editing apps. What began as simply capturing a moment can quickly turn into endless scrolling.A dedicated camera keeps things simple. You take the photo, put the camera away, and get back to whatever you were doing. No distractions, and no immediate urge to share the pic.Everything old is new againThe resurgence of retro-style cameras proves that technology trends don’t always follow a straight line. Sometimes, the future looks a lot like the past.Just as vinyl records returned because people missed the tactile, intentional experience of listening to music, these cameras are fi nding fans among the masses (including some celebs) that want to bring the fun back to photography.Retro-style cameras aren’t out to replace the amazing cameras in our phones. Instead, they offer a slower, simpler, and unpredictable alternative to capturing life’s memorable moments. Sometimes the best upgrade isn’t more technology, but remembering why we loved the old stuff in the fi rst place. simply capturing a moment can quickly turn into endless scrolling.A dedicated camera keeps things simple. You take the photo, put the camera away, and get back to whatever you were doing. No distractions, and no immediate urge to share immediate urge to share remembers family holidays in the fi lm era, it’s instantly familiar.Back then, taking a photo involved a little bit of faith, but it was basically pot luck how your shots turned out, so it paid to be mindful of things like lighting, framing, and focus. How many photos would be OK? How many would be out of focus or blurry? You never knew until you picked up your snaps from the local photo-developing booth. One of the most surprising pleasures of old school cameras was the element of mystery – unpredictability was part of the magic.Retro-style cameras recapture that feeling. When you’re not constantly checking the screen, you stay in the moment. Instead of obsessing over the perfect shot, you focus on the experience – the road trip, the live gig, the quirky birthday moment.Sometimes the best shots are the ones you forgot you even took.Imperfect is the new perfectAnother reason retro-style cameras are gaining popularity is their embrace of imperfection.Smartphones are incredibly powerful, but processing, AI smoothing, and endless fi lters and edits can make every photo look a bit generic.Retro-inspired cameras go in the other direction. This helps reduce blur when shooting in low light or using longer lenses. The new 4-axis multi-angle LCD screen offers excellent fl exibility when shooting from high, low or creative angles, while the 3.2” touchscreen provides intuitive control over settings and menus. The Alpha A7 V also features a high-resolution OLED electronic viewfi nder with a fast refresh rate, for bright and natural viewing while composing your shots.Built for everyday creativityThe Alpha A7 V is also designed to be practical and comfortable for everyday use. • SKINCAREsurprised at the results, too – lines, scars, and other features won't disappear, but over time you should see them noticeably fade. Who are they for?Simply put, LED face masks are for anyone over 18, regardless of gender or skin colour, who can benefi t from them. If you're dealing with an acne outbreak, a face mask with blue LED light can address this. If you want to smooth some of your lines, it can help with that too. If you have scarring or chronic conditions, certain face masks may be able to give you relief (although it's important to always consult with a doctor to make sure that a face mask is part of a broader plan for pain management). Are they safe?Yes, LED masks are considered safe for general everyday use, although it's important to follow the instructions for use carefully – you don't want to shine LED lights directly into your eyes, for example, and excessive use may cause issues. Many of these masks have been designed with approval from dermatologists, and companies report on the research they have conducted on their own products, which is always worth a look. As with any beauty or self-care product, be sure to check warnings and health recommendations before use, and always follow instructions to ensure safety. Using a face mask does not require you to know anything about this technology, though – you put it on, pick the settings that are right for what you need, and relax while the mask goes to work. Will they help with skincare? The light therapy offered by LED masks can become an essential part of your skincare routine, and they won't just have your face looking better – they can actually be actively good for your health. A lot of people invest in an LED mask to deal with wrinkles and lines, and using a red LED light will indeed tighten skin over time and noticeably fade these. But by targeting bacteria, a blue LED not only stops outbreaks, it also makes your skin generally healthier, dealing with potential issues before they fully arise. • LATEST AUDIONew Sonos speakers have landed at JB, and we reckon you’ll love them.Words Paul JonesSonos PlaySitting between the Roam 2 and the Move 2, the Sonos Play packs a real punch. Similar in size to a bag of flour, that punch comes courtesy of a decent mid-woofer, dual tweeters, and extra-bass radiators. We were genuinely surprised by how impactful Iron Maidens Number of the Beast was exploding out of the grille. Each Play comes complete with a base for wireless charging and a handy carrying loop for when you take it on the go. Yes, the Play can connect – and integrate – with an existing Sonos ecosystem over Wi-Fi. However, it can also hook up to a smartphone via Bluetooth, so you can take your rave with you.Battery life is definitely worth throwing into the conversation. You’ll get up to 24 hours from one charge. Yep, you heard that right – 24 hours. More than enough for the party people out there.Protected by a water and dustproof rating of IP67, it’s equally at home in the bush or by the pool as it is indoors on a shelf. The best bit? You can chain four Plays together using Bluetooth for full surround audio without needing the home network. It’s also possible to pair two of them over Wi-Fi to create a more conventional stereo setup. The Sonos Play also features automatic tuning via TruePlay. This means the speaker will customise its sound to the size of the room you choose.Bottom line The Sonos Play is the ultimate all-rounder. It has a powerful, high-quality audio profile and is highly portable, versatile, rugged, and built for how we listen to music in 2026.Home and roamjbhifi.com.au 62APRIL 2026TECH FEATURE visit jbhifi.com.au/stackSonos Era 100 SLSet to be the most affordable speaker in the Sonos line-up, the Era 100 SL is a masterful move from the brand. The reduction in price doesn’t compromise the sound, either. You’re still getting the excellent audio quality of the voice-controlled Sonos Era 100. So why is it less expensive? Simply put, the Era 100 SL ditches the voice assistant mic tech, opening the door to adding more speakers to an existing Sonos ecosystem or starting one fresh at a fraction of the cost.If you’re not fussed about voice-controlled functionality (it’s not for everyone), this is a great, budget-worthy entry point for a fledgling turntable setup, with the right adaptor.Movie lovers keen to add rear speakers to extend the home cinema experience, look no further. The Era 100 SL is an exceptional option to round out a surround sound system without a big outlay. We paired two Era 100 SLs with a Gen 1 Sonos Arc soundbar and a Gen 2 Sonos sub, and the results were superb. It’s difficult to think of a more convenient and cost-effective way to improve a blockbuster movie night in the living room.Bottom line The Era 100 SL is a simple yet uncompromising way to get great sound at a great price. It’s perfect for upgrading an existing system or as a nice starting point to build on.If you’re already part of the Sonos ecosystem and looking to enhance your current setup, or just beginning a home audio network journey, the latest drop from Sonos might be just what you’re after. So, what’s the deal? Nearly two years since the company’s last release, the audio specialists have unveiled two new speakers in the Play and the Era 100 SL. This is an inspired and well-considered release by the brand. Designed to slip seamlessly into an existing Sonos system, the Play admirably fills the portable speaker space currently bookended by the Roam 2 and Move 2, while the Era 100 SL brings all the speaker beef of the original Era 100 for those who don’t want to break the bank.Sonos PlaySonos Era 100 SLSonos PlaySonos Era 100 SLst258_047_TECH-Sonos-V3-PROOFED-AF.indd 1st258_047_TECH-Sonos-V3-PROOFED-AF.indd 1 24/3/2026 1:08 pm24/3/2026 1:08 pm

  • Sonys fl agship true wireless range returns with the WF-1000XM6, building on the enormous success of the XM5. These premium earbuds aim to set the benchmark once again for ANC and sound quality. We went hands-on to see if they deliver.Words Paul JonesThe premium earbud and headphone space is a hotly contested proving ground where only the strongest prevail. Dominated by a handful of heavyweight audio brands, it’s not for the faint-hearted, and even the smallest innovation can tilt the balance.Sony has consistently made a bigger splash than most with its WH and WF range of ear gear. Last year, the company blew our lobes off with the superb WH-1000XM6 headphones. Now, in 2026, Sony has turned its attention back to earbuds, delivering a compelling update to the WF-1000XM5 released in 2023.Design and comfort: Fit for a king (or queen)Initially, the XM6s feel slightly bulkier in the hand, but that doesn’t translate to an uncomfortable or unbalanced fi t. In fact, quite the opposite. Sony’s ergonomic design keeps them secure on walks, commutes, and workouts. Three sizes of soft gel ear tips help you fi nd the right seal. The earbuds come in two colour options, while the charging case is slimmer and taller than the XM5’s, yet still pocket-friendly. Touch controls are responsive and intuitive, allowing you to manage playback, ANC, and calls with simple taps. These controls can also be customised in Sony’s Sound Connect app.Noise cancelling: Pocket-sized silenceSony has worn the ANC crown for years. Plenty of brands have taken a run at the title, but whatever is in Sony’s secret silence sauce continues to keep outside noise rmly where it belongs. The XM6 immediately impresses. Despite their tiny footprint, they block out an astonishing amount of sound. You could easily think you’re wearing full-size headphones. With eight precision microphones instead of six, the XM6 adapts in real time to your surroundings. Low-end train rumble disappears, while higher-frequency distractions like traf c or chatter fade into the background. The result is a calm, cocoon-like listening experience, even on a noisy commute.Ambient Sound mode is equally polished. External audio passes through naturally, making it easy to stay aware when crossing roads or listening for announcements.Sound quality: Big sound in a small packageSilence matters, but sound is still the boss. Sony has tuned the XM6 for a beautifully balanced and energetic performance.Bass is deep and controlled without dominating the mix. Vocals sit front and centre with clarity and warmth, while treble remains crisp and detailed. In plain terms, these sound excellent.Throw any genre at them – metal, jazz, indie, or classical – and the XM6 will happily transform your playlist into a miniature gig inside your ears.High-quality Bluetooth codec support ensures even compressed streams sound better than expected. Spatial audio support also adds immersion for fi lms and streaming.Call quality: Clear and cleverCall performance is strong. AI-powered voice pickup technology isolates your voice effectively, cutting through background noise like wind or street chatter.Multipoint pairing adds everyday convenience, allowing the earbuds to connect to two devices simultaneously and switch seamlessly.Battery life: On the chargeBattery life sits around eight hours per charge, with two extra charges stored in the case. A quick fi ve-minute top-up provides about an hour of playback.Verdict: The benchmark just got higherThe WF-1000XM6 are less a radical reinvention and more a confi dent refi nement of an already excellent formula. Outstanding ANC, rich sound, comfortable design, and smart features combine to make these an easy recommendation in the premium earbud space.
