It was probably a dedicated home Pong set that my brother brought over to myparents’ house. I should say Robotron: 2084 , although I’m by no means super-skilled at it. It’s just such a perfect, brutal, elegant design. It’ll kick your head in again and again, but you’ll always come back for another go. It was technically amazing for its time, with lovely shattering explosions and more enemies onscreen than anything that had been seen at that time by far . Vid Kidz Jarvis/DeMar at their best. 3 What do you think is the most underrated video game of all time? I’d say the sequel to Robotron, Blaster . Not that it was a bettergame – it was decent, but not as good as Roby . It’s more the fact that it was *originally* made for 8-bit Atari hardware (the 5200), but Williams didn’t want to release a home version before an arcade version, so the Vid Kidz did a port of the game to arcade. I think back in the day I’d have just about peed my pants at the idea of an original game for the Atari from the creators of Defender , Stargate , and Robotron , my absolute heroes of game design and the single biggest inspiration to me in developing my own games. 4 Which of the games that you’ve created is your favourite? I’m always going to say Hover Bovver , because it was a collaborativedesign between me and my dad, and made at a time when everything was going really well and the games biz was just a fun and creative place to be. 5 What are you working on currently? A s is Horizon F estival tradition, things kic k of f with a spect acular prologue, showing of f some of the scenic wonders to come, while driving a selection of vehicles that w e’ d never be able to af ford in real lif e. As suc h, our Japanese adv enture starts with a fang in a Nissan GT -R, and culminates in get ting busy with this release’ s cover star , the absolutely wild T oy ot a GR GT . While the fi nal release will f eature all four seasons, our demo time only let us play in spring, likely to sho w off the stunning c herr y blossom infused scener y . F rom trees by the side of the road to streets strewn with the pink st uf f, the Pla yground Games team hav e upped the visual ante once again, af ter the impressive graphics of F orza Horizon 5 . Limited to just a handful of dif ferent racing and show case events in the demo, that F orza f eel remains whether belting around racetrac ks, streets, or cross countr y . The classic speed traps, speed zones, danger signs, trailblaz er and, of course, drif t zones all bec kon, with the lat ter very much a J apanese car lover’ s staple. One interesting point is that Horizon F estival progression will return to starting at the bot tom and gradually working our w ay up the pec king order via earning new wristbands. The map this time out is massiv e! Delivering a classic F or za-styled mishmash of Japan- inspired areas, it blends the real with the fantastical. T aking T ok yo as an e xample, whic h is the largest urban centre yet in a F orza game, we encounter real-lif e locations like T ok yo T ower , Rainbow Bridge, and the Shibu ya Scramble Crossing. Be yond the T okyo streets there’ s a huge map to explore, v enturing through numerous regions, all of whic h, in classic Japanese style, have their o wn mascots. These ma y be rice bowls, onigiri, or other mouthwatering J apanese delights, but in large, statue- like f orm. There are 200 of them to drive through as part of the collecting aspect of the gam e, along with 200 XP bonus boards . T ravelling outside the city , we encountered small villages, open fi elds, forests, twist y mountainous roads, a roc ket base, v arious racetrac ks to play in (including At t ac k ev ents), and a whole lot more – while certain routes had us watc hed over b y the majestic Mount F uji. While we only got to play with a handful of cars – the classic 1 994 T oy ot a Celica GT -F our an instant fa vourite – the cutscenes rev eal just some of the motoring mar vels in the game, from the Civic T ype R to classic T oy ot a Crown taxis. We ’re promised o ver 550 vehicles ranging from modern da y to JDM classics in the fi nal release, so there’ll be muc h motoring joy to discov er . Speaking of discov er y , the full map spans some 662-plus roads to fi nd, dot ted through 7 4 unique regions. A s is the Forza wa y , you’ll lik ely set your in-game GPS for one spot on the map but get sidetrac ked along the wa y by any of numerous appealing distractions. On top of that whic h we ’ve touc hed upon, the fi nal release will deliver the expected homes to be purc hased, which will o ffer customisable garages f or pla yers to show of f not only their car c ollection, but also their variousa chiev ements in-game. Plus, cars can be upgraded with n ew wheel, body kit, and other aeroo ptions, on top of custom liveriestha t can now be applied to windows. And you’ll be able to show off y our handiw ork at the newly introduced car meets, a Japanese motorhead staple. Motoring lov ers, welcome to Japan! Since making his debut in 1990’ s Super io Wor ld , Mar io’ s dinosaur companion Y oshi has become much mor e than a sidekick, going on to star in his own adv entur es. This includes new S witch 2 exclusiv e Y oshi and the Myster ious Book , out this month. Let’ s take a quic k look at the little guy ’ s history , and what t o expect from his new est outing. Words Amy Flower T hat fi rst advent ure, on the Super Nintendo, saw Y oshi’ s abilities, including fl ut ter -jumping, producing eggs, and being able to swallo w enemies, introduced, adding gameplay options that e xpanded the Mario platformer univ erse. His next appearance w as on the Nintendo Entertainment System, in the 1 991 puzzle game Mario oshi , follo wed b y tile-matching puzzler Y oshi’ s Cookie on multiple formats, and the Super Nintendo Super Scope light gun game Y oshi’ s Safari . It didn ’t take long f or the loyal and courageous Y oshi to become a fan fa vourite, and a bigger role for our dino pal w as just around the corner ... Y oshi landed a starring role in the 1 995 sequel Super Mario World 2: Y oshi’ s Island . Introducing a unique cray on-like art style, and further refi ning gameplay – including egg-hurling puzzles and the role of protector of Bab y Mario - the game was a huge success. Y oshi's Stor y on the Nintendo 64 follo wed, f eaturing a stor ybook aesthetic, while titles suc h as Y oshi's Woolly W orld (20 1 5) and Y oshi's Craf ted W orld (20 1 9) introduced gorgeous, handcraf ted visuals. While sticking to the platformer brief , these games brought exploration and creativity to the fore and f ound an audience amongst kids and adults alike. Then there w ere more puzzle-based handheld advent ures, including the wildly named Y oshi’ s Universal Gra vit ation (2004, Game Bo y Advance), and Y oshi T ouch & Go (2005, Nintendo DS). Meanwhile, the Y oshi’ s Island stor y continued in 2006’ s Y oshi’ s Island , and 20 14’ s Y oshi’ s New Island on the 3DS. Cameos elsewhere started with Super Mario Kart and extended in ensuing y ears to suc h releases as Super Smash Bros . and its sequels,plus Mario’ s many sporting exploits, from golf to tennis, and soccer to seeking Olympics glor y . The Y oshis are just going about their regular island business one day , when a talking, moustachioed encyclopedia, which introduces itself as “Mr . E”, drops from the sky . What to do? Well, Y oshi being the intrepid little dino that he is decides to dive – quite literally - into this chance to discover new things, by entering the pages of Mr . E. Here Y oshi encounters new creatures, for which he has several options. He can jump on them, eat them, or give them piggybacks, utilising their traits to further his progress. One example is an unnamed froglike creature – you get to name it later - that blows bubbles. Let it hop on Y oshi’ s back, and it’ll leave a trail of bubbles, which Y oshi can use to access otherwise unreachable higher areas. Discover apples, let the creature eat one, and you’ll get bigger , stronger bubbles – this is just one example of the many discoveries in store. There are puzzles to solve and many levels to conquer , with each of Mr . E’ s chapters revealing an array of new creatures for Y oshi to learn about and play with. The more that you discover about them, the more gold stars you unlock. The more gold stars that you unlock, the more you get to explore! What we’ve seen so far also hints at some familiar faces popping up, including Shy Guys and Baby Bowser . Now, what are they up to? What’ s striking about Y oshi and the Mysterious Book is its graphical style, which emulates classic stop motion animation to brilliant effect, bursting into life with glorious colour everywhere you look. Br ic k f ans rejoice, for this month br ings us LEGO Batman: Legacy of the D ar k Knight , the latest in a long line of LEGO g ames. Mar k Gr een, g ame dir ector at TT Games, br iefs us on what’ s in stor e… Words Amy Flower With its open wor ld Gotham City , can you please give us an idea just ho w big this game is? Gotham City in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight extends across f our islands and ov er multiple levels, both high into the sky and deep underground. And it’ s full of collectibles, puzzles, and c hallenges to solve, and, of course, crimes to stop! One moment you might be brawling with mimes to sa ve a hapless citizen from having their w allet stolen, the next you’ll be at tempting to solve the latest c hallenge from The Riddler . Additionally , as our stor y play s out across multiple decades, the city itself subtly changes ov er time, from shop fronts to vehicles on the road, to civilian fashion, so there's a scale in terms of time as well. With inspiration tak en from all things Batman – comics, mo vies, T V , and bey ond - what can you t ell us about the story? The story follows the lif e of Bruce W ayne from the tragedy that bef ell his parents when he was a c hild up to his later years as an established crime fi ghting legend. Along the w ay , he'll train with the League of Shado ws in Nanda Parbat, and he'll return to Gotham City to bring those responsible for the loss of his parents to justice. But “just one loose end” will lead him on an era spanning journey where he'll take on some of Gotham City's infamous super villains suc h as The Jok er , The P enguin, P oison Iv y , and Mr F reeze, as w ell as building a family of crime-fi ghting allies, including Robin, B atgirl, Catwoman, and more. Can we look f orward t o reliving classic scenes from Batman’ s history on v arious for mats? If so, are ther e any that y ou’r e particular ly excit ed about? Fans will recognise a lot of f amous movie and comic book moments, but remixed and reimagined into a brand-new story that holds plenty of surprises. It's alwa ys tough to pic k fa vourites, but I think the section that takes place in Arkham Asylum, with ref erences from both games and movies, will be a fan f avourite. I also hav e a sof t spot for the Flugelheim Museum scene that begins with The Jok er's famous artwork def acing to the sounds of Prince's P arty Man song , whic h some players will recognise from 1 989’ s Batman. Combat has also been chang ed up – how so? W e wanted to take inspiration from all Batman media, including video games, and we f elt that if we w ere going to reference video games, the best wa y was via gameplay . We ’re all big Batman: Arkham fans, so there ’ s inspiration from Roc ksteady’ s series as well as many of our fa vourite Batman mo vies and TV shows. Our goal has been to give pla yers an experience that’ s diff erent from previous LEGO and LEGO Batman games. W e’v e been able to make it w ork in our own, unique wa y , incorporating gadgets, combos, and co-op elements, along with accessibility , humour , and fun gameplay at the f orefront. W e also hav e stealth mec hanics, and players will fl ow seamlessly from stealth to combat – depending on their pref erred style of play . For the fi rst time in a LEGO game there ’ll be diff erent diffi culty levels – please, t ell us more! W e added them to off er players a more c hallenging combat experience, if the y pref erred. This was only possible because of the additional depth in our combat mec hanics. The base dif fi cult y is ‘Classic’ – this is a more traditional TT Games LEGO video game experience, with ample health, f ew er enemy encounters, and f ewer of the more c hallenging enemy types. ‘Caped Crusader’ increases the c hallenge by adding more enemies to encounters, having greater enemy v ariet y , and a higher number of more c hallenging enemy types. So, combat encounters are dif ferent between the set tings – it’ s not just scaling enemy health. ‘Dark Knight’ is the toughest dif fi culty – it has the same higher enemy counts and v ariet y as Caped Crusader , but you ha ve less health, enemies are tougher to def eat, enemy speed and at tack frequency is slightly increased, and you ha ve a limited number of lives. If y ou lose all your liv es, you'll get reset to the start of the encounter . So, managing your health becomes muc h more critical. Some weeks later , he collapsed from a mixture of prescription drugs and sheer exhaustion. Ret urning to New Y ork, he was taken to hospital, bleeding from his mouth, his nose, and his ey es. The doctors told him he was in imminent danger of a brain haemorrhage and pumped him full of cortisone and ordered total bed rest. His good friend, actor Robert De Niro, visited him at the hospital and bluntly told him to snap out of his miser y and direct a movie about the boxing c hampion Jak e LaMot t a, nic knamed the Bronx Bull. De Niro had pestered the direct or umpteen times to read LaMot ta's book titled Raging Bull , but Scorsese had alwa ys refused, due to having no interest whatsoev er in sports movies. How ever , the production that the Scorsese/De Niro tandem delivered is now seen as an unf orget t able masterpiece of cinema and furthermore has been voted b y American movie critics to be the greatest fi lm of the 1 980s. A fully recov ered Scorsese would tell his friends and colleagues that, without doubt, De Niro had saved his life. Sc orsese's old film- sc h ool friend MardikM artin (Mean Streets ) work ed on the s cript, then later PaulS chrader ( T axi Driver ) w rote a second draft th at both De Niro andSco rsese approved of . T he film chronicles the rise and f all of Jake LaMot ta (Robert De Niro), a middle weight boxing legend during the 1 940s and '50s, whose bouts with Sugar Ray R obinson put him at both the top and bot tom of his game. Throughout the fi lm, LaMotta is depicted as a man of ex cessive rage and furious jealousy stirred by both his wif e Vickie (Cath y Moriarty) and younger brother Joey . Numerous actors were considered for the role of J oey but none of them seemed to fi t the c haracter . Then, b y c hance, De Niro noticed the then lit tle-known actor Joe P esci on a late-night television mob drama titled The Death Collector and suggested to Scorsese that this just might be the right actor to play J oey LaMot ta. Although P esci was older than De Niro, his reading of the script convinced both De Niro and Scorsese that Joe P esci was ideal for the y oung brother role. Scorsese's decision to shoot the fi lm in monoc hrome (a rarity then in modern-day fi lming) came from a sentence in La Mot ta's biography: "When I think bac k I f eel like I'm looking at my self in an old blac k & white movie." Ingeniously fabricated b y Scorsese, he brilliantly used various camera z ooms, low -angle shots, slow motion, and close-ups whic h made the box ers' blood look like blac k ink (he borrowed Hitc hcoc k's idea in Psyc ho by using c hocolate syrup f or the blood ef fects). As the production mo ved for ward, Scorsese gradually got his movie mojo confi dence back and found complete redemption tow ard the end of the project. Production act ually closed down for se veral months so that De Niro, playing the ageing La Mot t a, could go on a binge eating spree in order to increase his weight b y 60 pounds. The intensity of De Niro is remarkable as he becomes almost unrecognisable as the bloated ex -box er . F urthermore, his ov erall performance is a perf ect analysis of one man's aggression and insecurity who found it impossible to control his intense rage and brutality outside of the ring. It st ands as the most striking ac hiev ement of De Niro's remarkable career that deser vedly won him a 'B est Actor' Oscar . Writ ten and recorded in a 1 2-hour burst, it was an EP called Giddy Up and it was issuedon casset te. A year later , the A ussie punk band released another casset te called Big At traction . As Pitc hfork noted, “Both EPs were te xtbook exercises in DIY where it w as impossible to separate the content from the format; as the songs blaz ed by in minute-long bursts, the sound thrilled as muc h as th e hooks. ” Giddy Up opened with an Am yl manif esto called Pleasure Fore ver . It was a 1 .1 5-minute ball of energy that signalled the band’ s approac h. “Mov e over , ” Amy T aylor sang. “I’m the new Thin Lizzy . ” And the debut EP concluded with a classic slice of punk called Stole My Push Bik e . She says, “It actually felt incredible being alone, existing in a space not defi ned by anyone else.” That said, the record features a stack of special guests, including Miranda Lambert, Billy Strings, and country legend Willie Nelson. ALDOUS HARDING Tr ain on the Island ROCKET After supporting Nick Cave, Aldous Harding releases her fi fth album, with the New Zealand indie folk artist again working with English producer John Parish at the Rockfi eld Studios in Wales. T rain on the Island follows Harding’ s 2022 album, Warm Chris , which was her T op 40 debut in Australia, reaching number 31. THE CLAYPOOL LENNON DELIRIUM The Great P arrot-Ox and the Golden Egg of Empathy INERTIA The Claypool Lennon Delirium is a supergroup featuring Les Claypool from Primus, John and Y oko’ s son Sean Ono Lennon, plus Stone Giant’ s João Nogueira, and Cake’ s Paulo Baldi. Their sound is a potent mix of prog rock and psychedelia; Sean calls it “progadelic”. Their third album comes with one of the year’ s great titles: The Great Parrot-Ox and the Golden Egg of Empathy . The lead single, The Golden Egg of Empathy , features Willow, the daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. THE LEMON TW IGS Look for Y our Mind! SONY The D’Addario brothers, Brian and Michael, dig The Beatles and The Beach Boys and they have jokingly called their pop sound “Mersey Beach”. The American band’ s sixth studio album is a sweet treat from start to fi nish. As for the title, Brian explains, “I do think that now is a time of insanity . Y ou really have to hold onto your own mind if you don’t wanna lose it.” THE BLACK KE YS Peaches! INERTIA For their 14th studio album, American rock duo The Black Keys have again dug deep to cover some of their favourite songs, including Neil Y oung’ s It’ s a Dream , Frank Zappa’ s T ell Me Y ou Love Me, and R.L. Burnside’ s Fireman Ring the Bell , as well asY ou Got to Lose , which was originally recorded by George Thorogood and The Destroyers in 1977. The result sounds like classic Black Keys. Live and rocking. JEFF GOLDBLUM & T HE MILDRED SNI TZER ORCHESTRA Night Blooms UNIVERSAL Richard Wilkins once solemnly announced that Jeff Goldblum had died. But 17 years later , the American actor is very much alive. And as well as movies, he’ s making some marvellous jazz music with The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra. Night Blooms adds six new tracks to last year’ s Still Blooming , with Goldblum joined by a stack of special guests, including Ariana Grande, Charlie Puth, Melody Gardot, and Cynthia Erivo. L INDA PERRY Let It Die Here MGM Linda Perry was the lead singer of 4 Non Blondes when we got to know her in the early ’90s. Remember that classic hit What’ s Up? She then wrote and produced a stack of hits for other artists, including Pink’ s Get the Party Started and Christina Aguilera’ s Beautiful . This new soloalbum features Perry’ s version of Beautiful . Thereis also a companion documentary called Let It Die Here , which covers Perry’ s remarkable life, and a new 4 Non Blondes is scheduled for later this year . BLEACHERS Everyone for Ten Minutes INERTIA Jack Antonoff is a 13-time Grammy winner , best known for writing and producing hits for T aylor Swift, Lorde, and Sabrina Carpenter . But he also has his own band, Bleachers. Everyone for T en Minutes is their fi fth studio album. They cite the classic John Hughes teen fl icks as an infl uence and, approproriately, the new record has “moments where it briefl y peers into darkness, but it’ s essentially an optimistic record that feels lovestruck and hopeful”. JOSH GROBAN Cinematic INERTIA For his tenth studio album – his fi rst in six years - America’ s Josh Groban is off to the movies, capturing “the nostalgia, the drama, and the romance” as he covers a set of soundtrack smashes, including Casablanca ’s As T ime Goes By , James Bond’ s Skyfall ,Ghost ’s Unchained Melody (a duet with Jennifer Hudson), Against All Odds , and Can You Feel the Love T onight from The Lion King . Hot on the heels of the Man on the Run Wings doco, TheBoys of Dungeon Lane takes us back to Liverpool, where it all began for Sir Paul. Dungeon Lane is in Speke, a suburb of Liverpool, where the singer , who turns 84 next month, remembers “smoky bars and cheap guitars”. “Looking back on your life, you go, ‘Wow , did we really do that?’ All of that comes fl ooding back. It’ s like a dream.” SOCIAL DISTORTION Born to Kill ROCKET Social Distortion started rocking way back in 1978. Bruce Springsteen has called them “one of the not-heralded enough great American rock bands”. Born to Kill is their eighth studio album, their fi rst in 15 years. It’ s also the band’ s fi rst studio album to feature drummer David Hidalgo Jr , the son of the Los Lobos guitarist and singer . A USSIE RELEA SES EMMA LOUISE Sunshine for Happiness INERTIA Following her Dumb collaboration with Flume, Queensland’ s Emma Louise releases her fourth solo studio album, Sunshine for Happiness , a collection of ethereal pop, “a breakthrough that followed a breakdown”. After releasing her third album, Lilac Everything , thesinger -songwriter was burned out, and she checked herself into a facility in Los Angeles. She thought she was done with music, but she was drawn to the hospital’ s piano, and the songs poured out of her . The result is a stunning set of songs about mortality , grief, love, and healing. RACHAEL FAHIM Who Y ou Are UNIVERSAL After hearing Kasey Chambers’ Not Pretty Enough , Sydney’ s Rachael Fahim was inspired to make her own country music. Now she’ s releasing her debut album, featuring T oo Damn Hot , a number one smash on the Australian Country Airplay chart. It’ s a powerful piece of defi ance, with the singer declaring, “Y ou’re too damn hot to cry , don’t call back – he’ s overrated.” And the title track is another tale of love gone wrong. “Screamin’ at the top of my lungs ’cause I hate you for leading me on. W ords Paul Jones ”It seems like a lot of people are going bigger these day s, ” say s Liesl, one half of the JB installation team, chat ting to S onTAC K the phone. The other half , Simon, is busy negotiating the Gold Coast traf fi c on the drive to another job. “Y ounger audiences, especially , are going 75-inc h and bigger . 75-inch is the ne w 65-inc h. ” Liesl and Simon migrated with their young c hildren from South Africa 1 5 years ago. Once in A ustralia, they established an audiovisual compan y , and for the last two years, their f ocus has been on JB Hi-Fi TV and audio installs. W orking and living together is no mean f eat, and it may not be for e ver y couple. So, what’ s their secret? “W e’ ve been working together f or so long that we kno w what eac h other ’ s jobs are. We pla y to each other’ s strengths, ” explains Liesl. “I think a lot of people, especially the elderly , are at ease when they see me walk in with Simon. “I do the c hat t y , friendly stuf f while Simon gets on with the job. We ’re so used to working together that if w e do occasionally get frustrated on the job f or some reason, we hold it until w e get in the car , ” she laughs. According to Liesl, the a verage TV inst allation takes only an hour , including cable concealment if the customer opts for that service. “Because w e’ re a t wo-person team, while Simon is doing the wall mounting f or the TV and the cable conceal, I’ll be doing the TV setup. W e’ re done within the hour , ” she says.
