Like most tech around the house, we tend to buy new when the old one dies or becomes incompatible with new standards. There have been huge shifts in TV technology in the last two years, let alone the last five.If your TV has seen better days, upgrading in 2026 is about stepping into a completely different viewing experience. The biggest shift is how ‘smart’ TVs have become. Modern sets now use AI technology to automatically adjust picture and sound in real time, analysing what you’re watching and optimising it scene by scene - no fiddling with settings required.That means clearer sport, richer movies, and even old content looking sharper thanks to advanced upscaling.Picture quality has also taken a noticeable leap. Brighter OLED panels and improved Mini LED technology deliver deeper blacks, higher contrast, and more vibrant colour – even in bright living rooms.It’s the kind of upgrade you notice instantly, whether you’re streaming, gaming, or watching free-to-air.Then theres how we actually watch TV now. With streaming making up the majority of viewing, today’s smart TVs are built as entertainment hubs, giving you instant access to apps, live TV, music, and more in one place.Add in smoother motion for sport and gaming, bigger screen sizes becoming more accessible, and sleeker, wall-friendly designs, and the difference is hard to ignore.Upgrading your TV in 2026 isn’t just an increase in size – it’s an upgrade in how you watch, hear, and experience everything on screen.Paul Jones, Editor-in-ChiefWELCOMEFounder Nic ShortEditor-in-Chief Paul JonesTech Editor Scott HockingGames & Online Editor Amy FlowerMovie & TV Editor Glenn CochraneCreative Director Gary Siewert Movies Consultant Kerrie Taylor Games Consultant Sachi FernandoMusic Consultant Mike GlynnMarketing Manager Fleur ParkerChief ContributorsGill Pringle, Bob Jones, James O’ConnorContributorsJeff Jenkins, Billy Pinnell, Bec Summer, Dan Nicholson, Trista McConville, Michael Caverzan Social Media ManagerGlenn CochraneProduction ManagerCraig PattersonCorrespondenceSTACK[email protected]DisclaimerSTACK is published by Scribal Custom Pty Ltd (ACN 092 362 135). © Copyright Scribal Custom Pty Ltd, 2026 All rights reserved. All material appearing in this publication is copyright unless otherwise stated or it may rest with the provider of the supplied material or advertisement. I really enjoyed that segment in Uncharted 4: A Thiefs End where you played classic levels of Crash on a virtual PS1.PS5. Thank goodness consoles have 60fps now. Never going back! You can only have one games console from any era – what would it be and why? What have you been playing most lately?Resident Evil Requiem. Leon can and will do anything for the ‘WOW’ moment. He’s aura farming his way into my heart! This game perfectly encapsulates both horror and action into a perfectly neat bow. Combining elements from previous RE titles, this game shocks and impresses with both game mechanics and story beats! 10/10 – Leon, I love you! What’s your all-time favourite game or game series? The Witcher. Give me The Witcher 4 NOW!1 What was the fi rst game that you remember playing? It was probably a dedicated home Pong set that my brother brought over to my parents’ house. But I wasn’t truly bitten by the video game bug until I first encountered Space Invaders.2 What’s your favourite video game of all time? I should say Robotron: 2084, although I’m by no means super-skilled at it. It’s just such a perfect, brutal, elegant design. It’ll kick your head in again and again, but you’ll always come back for another go. It was technically amazing for its time, with lovely shattering explosions and more enemies onscreen than anything that had been seen at that time by far. Vid Kidz Jarvis/DeMar at their best.3 What do you think is the most underrated video game of all time? I’d say the sequel to Robotron, Blaster. Not that it was a better game – it was decent, but not as good as Roby. It’s more the fact that it was *originally* made for 8-bit Atari hardware (the 5200), but Williams didn’t want to release a home version before an arcade version, so the Vid Kidz did a port of the game to arcade. I think back in the day I’d have just about peed my pants at the idea of an original game for the Atari from the creators of Defender, Stargate, and Robotron, my absolute heroes of game design and the single biggest inspiration to me in developing my own games.4 Which of the games that you’ve created is your favourite? I’m always going to say Hover Bovver, because it was a collaborative design between me and my dad, and made at a time when everything was going really well and the games biz was just a fun and creative place to be.5 What are you working on currently? • As is Horizon Festival tradition, things kick off with a spectacular prologue, showing off some of the scenic wonders to come, while driving a selection of vehicles that we’d never be able to afford in real life. As such, our Japanese adventure starts with a fang in a Nissan GT-R, and culminates in getting busy with this release’s cover star, the absolutely wild Toyota GR GT.While the fi nal release will feature all four seasons, our demo time only let us play in spring, likely to show off the stunning cherry blossom infused scenery. From trees by the side of the road to streets strewn with the pink stuff, the Playground Games team have upped the visual ante once again, after the impressive graphics of Forza Horizon 5.Limited to just a handful of different racing and showcase events in the demo, that Forza feel remains whether belting around racetracks, streets, or cross country. The classic speed traps, speed zones, danger signs, trailblazer and, of course, drift zones all beckon, with the latter very much a Japanese car lover’s staple. One interesting point is that Horizon Festival progression will return to starting at the bottom and gradually working our way up the pecking order via earning new wristbands. The map this time out is massive! Delivering a classic Forza-styled mishmash of Japan-inspired areas, it blends the real with the fantastical. Taking Tokyo as an example, which is the largest urban centre yet in a Forza game, we encounter real-life locations like Tokyo Tower, Rainbow Bridge, and the Shibuya Scramble Crossing. Beyond the Tokyo streets there’s a huge map to explore, venturing through numerous regions, all of which, in classic Japanese style, have their own mascots. These may be rice bowls, onigiri, or other mouthwatering Japanese delights, but in large, statue-like form. There are 200 of them to drive through as part of the collecting aspect of the game, along with 200 XP bonus boards.Travelling outside the city, we encountered small villages, open fi elds, forests, twisty mountainous roads, a rocket base, various racetracks to play in (including new Time Attack events), and a whole lot more – while certain routes had us watched over by the majestic Mount Fuji. While we only got to play with a handful of cars – the classic 1994 Toyota Celica GT-Four an instant favourite – the cutscenes reveal just some of the motoring marvels in the game, from the Civic Type R to classic Toyota Crown taxis. We’re promised over 550 vehicles ranging from modern day to JDM classics in the fi nal release, so there’ll be much motoring joy to discover.Speaking of discovery, the full map spans some 662-plus roads to fi nd, dotted through 74 unique regions. As is the Forza way, you’ll likely set your in-game GPS for one spot on the map but get sidetracked along the way by any of numerous appealing distractions. On top of that which we’ve touched upon, the fi nal release will deliver the expected homes to be purchased, which will offer customisable garages for players to show off not only their car collection, but also their various achievements in-game. Plus, cars can be upgraded with new wheel, body kit, and other aero options, on top of custom liveries that can now be applied to windows. And you’ll be able to show off your handiwork at the newly introduced car meets, a Japanese motorhead staple. Motoring lovers, welcome to Japan! Forza Horizon 6 speeds our way this month, and it’s bringing with it the most requested location in the series’ history – Japan. We had the opportunity to drive around a preview build, and theres much to look forward to. • Since making his debut in 1990’s Super Mario World, Mario’s dinosaur companion Yoshi has become much more than a sidekick, going on to star in his own adventures. This includes new Switch 2 exclusive Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, out this month. Let’s take a quick look at the little guys history, and what to expect from his newest outing. Words Amy FlowerThat fi rst adventure, on the Super Nintendo, saw Yoshi’s abilities, including utter-jumping, producing eggs, and being able to swallow enemies, introduced, adding gameplay options that expanded the Mario platformer universe. His next appearance was on the Nintendo Entertainment System, in the 1991 puzzle game Mario & Yoshi, followed by tile-matching puzzler Yoshi’s Cookie on multiple formats, and the Super Nintendo Super Scope light gun game Yoshi’s Safari. It didn’t take long for the loyal and courageous Yoshi to become a fan favourite, and a bigger role for our dino pal was just around the corner...Yoshi landed a starring role in the 1995 sequel Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island. Introducing a unique crayon-like art style, and further refi ning gameplay – including egg-hurling puzzles and the role of protector of Baby Mario - the game was a huge success.Yoshi's Story on the Nintendo 64 followed, featuring a storybook aesthetic, while titles such as Yoshi's Woolly World (2015) and Yoshi's Crafted World (2019) introduced gorgeous, handcrafted visuals. While sticking to the platformer brief, these games brought exploration and creativity to the fore and found an audience amongst kids and adults alike. Then there were more puzzle-based handheld adventures, including the wildly named Yoshi’s Universal Gravitation (2004, Game Boy Advance), and Yoshi Touch & Go (2005, Nintendo DS). Meanwhile, the Yoshi’s Islandstory continued in 2006’s Yoshi’s Island DS, and 2014’s Yoshi’s New Island on the 3DS.Cameos elsewhere started with Super Mario Kart and extended in ensuing years to such releases as Super Smash Bros. and its sequels, plus Mario’s many sporting exploits, from golf to tennis, and soccer to seeking Olympics glory.Almost as instantly recognisable now as Mario was then, loveable Yoshi’s popularity shows no sign of waning as he hits Nintendo’s latest hardware with his very own new adventure. jbhifi.com.au 10M AY 2026GAMINGFEATURE visit jbhifi .com.au/stackIF YOU LIKE THIS, YOU’LL LOVE THESE:Super Mario Bros. Well, Yoshi being the intrepid little dino that he is decides to dive – quite literally - into this chance to discover new things, by entering the pages of Mr. E.Here Yoshi encounters new creatures, for which he has several options. He can jump on them, eat them, or give them piggybacks, utilising their traits to further his progress. One example is an unnamed froglike creature – you get to name it later - that blows bubbles. Let it hop on Yoshi’s back, and it’ll leave a trail of bubbles, which Yoshi can use to access otherwise unreachable higher areas. Discover apples, let the creature eat one, and you’ll get bigger, stronger bubbles – this is just one example of the many discoveries in store. There are puzzles to solve and many levels to conquer, with each of Mr. E’s chapters revealing an array of new creatures for Yoshi to learn about and play with. The more that you discover about them, the more gold stars you unlock. The more gold stars that you unlock, the more you get to explore! What we’ve seen so far also hints at some familiar faces popping up, including Shy Guys and Baby Bowser. Now, what are they up to?What’s striking about Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is its graphical style, which emulates classic stop motion animation to brilliant effect, bursting into life with glorious colour everywhere you look. • Brick fans rejoice, for this month brings us LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, the latest in a long line of LEGO games. Mark Green, game director at TT Games, briefs us on what’s in store… Words Amy FlowerWith its open world Gotham City, can you please give us an idea just how big this game is?Gotham City in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight extends across four islands and over multiple levels, both high into the sky and deep underground. And it’s full of collectibles, puzzles, and challenges to solve, and, of course, crimes to stop! One moment you might be brawling with mimes to save a hapless citizen from having their wallet stolen, the next you’ll be attempting to solve the latest challenge from The Riddler. Additionally, as our story plays out across multiple decades, the city itself subtly changes over time, from shop fronts to vehicles on the road, to civilian fashion, so there's a scale in terms of time as well. With inspiration taken from all things Batman – comics, movies, TV, and beyond - what can you tell us about the story? The story follows the life of Bruce Wayne from the tragedy that befell his parents when he was a child up to his later years as an established crime fi ghting legend. Along the way, he'll train with the League of Shadows in Nanda Parbat, and he'll return to Gotham City to bring those responsible for the loss of his parents to justice. But “just one loose end” will lead him on an era spanning journey where he'll take on some of Gotham City's infamous supervillains such as The Joker, The Penguin, Poison Ivy, and Mr Freeze, as well as building a family of crime-fi ghting allies, including Robin, Batgirl, Catwoman, and more. Can we look forward to reliving classic scenes from Batman’s history on various formats? If so, are there any that you’re particularly excited about?Fans will recognise a lot of famous movie and comic book moments, but remixed and reimagined into a brand-new story that holds plenty of surprises. It's always tough to pick favourites, but I think the section that takes place in Arkham Asylum, with references from both games and movies, will be a fan favourite. I also have a soft spot for the Flugelheim Museum scene that begins with The Joker's famous artwork defacing to the sounds of Prince's Party Man song, which some players will recognise from 1989’s Batman. Combat has also been changed up – how so?We wanted to take inspiration from all Batman media, including video games, and we felt that if we were going to reference video games, the best way was via gameplay. We’re all big Batman: Arkham fans, so theres inspiration from Rocksteady’s series as well as many of our favourite Batman movies and TV shows. Our goal has been to give players an experience that’s different from previous LEGO and LEGO Batman games. We’ve been able to make it work in our own, unique way, incorporating gadgets, combos, and co-op elements, along with accessibility, humour, and fun gameplay at the forefront. We also have stealth mechanics, and players will fl ow seamlessly from stealth to combat – depending on their preferred style of play. For the fi rst time in a LEGO game there’ll be different diffi culty levels – please, tell us more!We added them to offer players a more challenging combat experience, if they preferred. This was only possible because of the additional depth in our combat mechanics. The base dif culty is ‘Classic’ – this is a more traditional TT Games LEGO video game experience, with ample health, fewer enemy encounters, and fewer of the more challenging enemy types. ‘Caped Crusader’ increases the challenge by adding more enemies to encounters, having greater enemy variety, and a higher number of more challenging enemy types. So, combat encounters are different between the settings – it’s not just scaling enemy health. ‘Dark Knight’ is the toughest dif culty – it has the same higher enemy counts and variety as Caped Crusader, but you have less health, enemies are tougher to defeat, enemy speed and attack frequency is slightly increased, and you have a limited number of lives. If you lose all your lives, you'll get reset to the start of the encounter. So, managing your health becomes much more critical. You can change the dif culty at any time, so players can try out the different levels to see which best suits them. jbhifi.com.au 12M AY 2026GAMINGFEATURE visit jbhifi .com.au/stackIF YOU LIKE THIS, YOU’LL LOVE THESE:LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, LEGO Horizon Adventures, LEGO Party!LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knightis out May 19FORMAT: GENRE: Action adventure MULTIPLAYER: YesLEGO Batman: LEGO BAT S ENTERTAINMENT!st259_012_GAMING-LEGO Batman-PROOFED-AF.indd 1st259_012_GAMING-LEGO Batman-PROOFED-AF.indd 1 20/4/2026 12:13 pm20/4/2026 12:13 pm

  • Finding Nemo. It was the gateway of my love for both movies and collecting DVDs. It even led to my parents buying a separate DVD player and TV so that I wouldn’t hog theirs all the time. What’s one of your all-time favourite movies, and why? The Blues Brothers. It’s one of the best comedies ever made. It’s sentimental, too, as my dad loved blues music growing up and played it in front of me. It’s a weird, wacky comedy that puts a smile on my face and brings back fond memories of watching it with him. What’s one of your all-time favourite TV series, and why? It would have to be Superman & Lois. It’s a niche series but if you enjoy the Superman character or DC it’s defi nitely one that’s worth giving a try. Its dramatic storytelling is incredible for a series of its scale. It’s a different take on the iconic hero and while it has some goofy moments, it’s one that feels uplifting yet deeply emotional. What have you been watching lately that you would recommend?Lately I’ve been doing “Western Wednesdays” and hitting up a lot of classic spaghetti westerns. The main ones I’d recommend are Clint Eastwood and Sergio Leone’s Dollars Trilogy (A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, andThe Good, The Bad and the Ugly). • If we first fell in love with him 37 years ago as the tall handsome blue-eyed young star of Dead Poets Society, then Ethan Hawke, 55, is today unrecognisable as a short, balding, brown-eyed Broadway lyricist in Blue Moon. It’s a performance that earned him a fifth Oscar nomination – and not just because of the physical transformation, but much more for how he inhabits the very soul of this melancholic, fast-talking, alcoholic writer facing the final curtain of his career.Responsible for unforgettable songs such as Manhattan, My Funny Valentine and, of course, Blue Moon, Lorenz Hart’s alcoholism led to the break-up of his partnership with Richard Rodgers, the film taking part over one evening where Hart is invited to the opening night party of Rodgers’ hit musical Oklahoma!– with his new lyricist Oscar Hammerstein.“So much is made of the winners in life but, with this, it’s like being at a wedding from the ex-wife’s point of view,” observes Hawke.Marking his ninth collaboration with director/writer Richard Linklater, Blue Moon has been almost a decade in the making, the filmmaker waiting for his leading man to age into the character.Hawke knew he would have to shave his head for the role – Hart boasting just a few brown strands combed over his balding pate - but it wasn’t something he took lightly At my age you’re like, ‘Wait a second, is this just a giant mistake?’” he smiles, admitting his fears about it growing back. But there’s very little he wouldn’t do for Linklater – the pair having made memorable films Boyhood and the Before trilogy together.Though Hart’s acerbic tongue could be off-putting to some, Hawke says, “I fell in love. And, like any parent facing an empty nest, he was eager to spend as much time as possible with his filmmaker/painter son Ronan Day-Lewis, 28, before the Yale graduate flew the coop for good. All those emotions would prompt father and son to co-write the drama Anemone, marking Ronans directorial feature debut while also marking Daniel’s own return to the big screen – almost ten years after his last major role in Phantom Thread.“We've worked on a lot of strange things over the years together, since he was a kid, and I had an anticipatory regret at the thought that Ronan was going to make films and I wouldn't be a part of them,” reveals the reclusive actor.“So, it was really just the impulse to try and find something together to do. And yes, absolutely, from the word go, I knew that I would act in it in some way,he admits.Referencing his periodic career withdrawals, he knew the day was coming when he would have to put all that aside if his sons project was to flourish.“It began with just that pure impulse of wishing to work with Ronan, and the writing took place over quite a long period of time. And, as we sort of edged closer and closer towards some kind of a conclusion, I think both of us were surprised to find that we had a story that we could then do,“It was such a strange thing to see him, both as a dad, but then also as Ray at the same time.” says Ronan on working alongside his old man.“I've seen him work in the past, growing up, just more from a distance. And it was more of that kind of separation, when he was home.Grateful for the opportunity to work with his dad, he adds: “We both felt strongly that the film was something that we wanted to do together. • The timing of Welcome to Derrycouldn’t be better. It arrives as the perfect antidote to the post-Stranger Things void, and at a moment when Stephen King is dominating pop culture... again.Welcome to Derry arrives with built-in mythology, spun from the terrifying world previously realised in Andy Muschietti’s blockbuster adaptations of Stephen King’s It (2017) and It: Chapter Two (2019). Developed by Muschietti alongside Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs, the series expands the cinematic universe by travelling backwards, digging into the cursed history of Derry, Maine, and the cyclical evil that haunts it.Set decades before the Losers’ Club first encountered Pennywise, the show leans into the rich interludes of King’s original novel, dramatising the towns past tragedies and the sinister patterns that repeat every 27 years. Bill Skarsgård returns as Pennywise, maintaining continuity with the films while anchoring the series in familiar nightmare fuel. At the same time, the long-form format allows the creators to widen the lens, exploring Derry as a character in itself, shaped by generational trauma and buried secrets. For horror fans, the series is essential viewing, boasting some of the most horrific imagery conceivable. It’s true to King’s vision and is arguably amongst the best drama television in recent years, let alone horror. It’s a remarkable feat considering such a bumpy production period. Filming began in 2023 across Ontario, Canada, with Port Hope once again doubling for Derry, preserving the visual DNA established in the films. However, the SAG-AFTRA strike forced a shutdown, delaying the shoot and creating continuity challenges, particularly with younger cast members ageing out of their roles. The creative team ultimately adjusted timelines and story elements, a testament to the productions scale and ambition. The series lands at a moment when Stephen King is enjoying yet another cultural surge. In a short space of time, his stories of The Life of Chuck, The Long Walk, The Running Man, The Monkey, and The Institute are just some of the recent adaptations. Glenn Cochraneand Margot is able to encapsulate all of this.Likewise Fennell was impressed by Elordi, having already directed him on Saltburn. “Heathcliff is the archetypical, Byronic hero, a despicable love interest. He’s defensive, angry, cruel, dangerous, but he’s also one of the most devastatingly moving characters in literature. Gathering all of those things together is tough and, like Cathy, it required an actor who could make us love the unlovable. “Jacob is extraordinary in that way, I knew he could communicate the tenderness, the depth of feeling, the loneliness of Heathcliff, as well as his copious flaws. Gill PringleIconoclastic filmmaker Emerald Fennell turned to Australians Margot Robbie, 35, and Jacob Elordi, 28, in bringing her brave new vision of Emily Bronte’s 1847 novel Wuthering Heights to the big screen.A daring interpretation of one of the greatest love stories of all time, it’s surely louder, sexier, and more provocative than any of its predecessors. Fennell – celebrated for her films Promising Young Woman and Saltburn - had long been fascinated by Wuthering Heights, but couldn’t conceive of making the film without first finding the perfect couple.“Margot is absolutely extraordinary,” she says of the Barbie star. “The thing about casting is finding the root of this person and what do they make you feel and how can that be used and subverted in an interesting way as this character? “For me, Cathy is like Estella from Great jbhifi.com.au 22M AY 2026MOVIEFEATURE visit jbhifi .com.au/stackORIGINS OF EVIL: WELCOME TO DERRYGENRE: Horror RUN TIME: SeriesA WILDER “WUTHERING HEIGHTS”GENRE: Romance RUN TIME: 2h 16mIF YOU LIKE THIS, YOU’LL LOVE THESE:IF YOU LIKE THIS, YOU’LL LOVE THESE:Saltburn, Hamnet, Emma, The History of Sound, Die My Love. The director of Saltburn reimagines Wuthering Heights as a bold, provocative tale of love, cruelty, and obsession.Margot Robbieand Jacob ElordiBill Skarsgårdturned to Australians Margot Robbie, 35, Wuthering Heightsis out May 13DYK: The title’s stylised quotation marks represent Fennell’s exible interpretation, as it was her intention to recreate the feeling of being a teenage girl reading the book for the fi rst time.Expectations, or Scarlett O’Hara from Gone with the Wind. Instead, it’s more of a journey - a strange hypnoticexperience where you’re drifting through a dream (or nightmare)alongside the characters. The story follows a father named Luis, played by Sergi López, who travels into the Moroccan desert searching for his missing daughter. She was last seen at a rave, and that’s where the film really begins to unfold. If you’re expecting a straightforward “missing person” story, Sirāt will probably surprise you. The plot is deliberately loose. Instead of focusing on clues and investigation, it drops the audience into a nomadic, almost otherworldly rave community of people living on the fringes. An uncompromising visionary, Laxe’s film taps into the tumultuous and terrifying times we are living through. A hero’s journey turned inward, he explores themes of the individual versus the collective during times of unbearable tension and turmoil, embracing transcendence whilst also offering hope, connection and perseverance in dark times.Sirāt addresses the war that is looming large in our world, one in which we will be obliged to ask ourselves what it means to be human,” says Laxe. “As cultural walls and class distinctions erode, Luis – who hails from a different social context as the ravers he meets - discovers he is just as wounded and broken as his companions. “But the ravers I have known, and the ravers that inspired and appear in this film, are already in dialogue with their wounds. Luis, for his part, must decide whether hes ready to join this family of mutilated people.Sirāt opens with an epigram taken from Arabic scripture, referring to a mythical bridge conjoining heaven and hell. It’s also a term meaning “the path” or “the way,” hinting at routes both physical and metaphysical. “I like this idea that to get to paradise, sometimes you have to go through hell,” says Laxe.“This is the essence of the movie – that heaven and hell are not these closed or separate rooms; you have to go through one to get to the other, something Luis experiences on his own journey.Gill PringleGENRE: Thriller adventure RUN TIME: 1h 55mIF YOU LIKE THIS, YOU’LL LOVE THESE:Bruno Núñezand Sergi López Sirātis out May 6It Was Just an Accident, The Way My Way, The Last Journey, Leave No TraceDESERT RAVE! It’s a tense, gruesome, suspense-driven exploit that will have you gripping the armrest. You might assume Roberts is paying tribute to classic horror movies like Monkey Shines or Link. However, his direct point of influence was actually the 1983 adaptation of Stephen King’s Cujo.“For me, it opened up a whole new kind of horror based in real situations, not vampires and monsters,” Roberts explains. “I instinctively understood the way that the director Lewis Teague and the cinematographer Jan de Bont were manipulating the audience. I knew right then that I wanted to direct films like that. When conceiving Primate, Roberts began thinking about other kinds of family pets that might develop an appetite for killing. Chimps have a reputation for abrasive and violent tendencies, giving him the perfect candidate.“Chimpanzees can be evil, terrifying creatures in real life. They hunt other animals and even other chimps for food. They fly into rages,he says. “The more research I did, the darker the picture became.Primate is Roberts’ latest in a long line of horror movies. He made a name for himself with films like F, 47 Metres Down, and Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. It’s a genre he feels at home in, permitting him to flex his creative muscle.“I love the horror genre, both as a director and a movie fan,” he says. As an audience member, I love being scared in a safe environment. As a filmmaker, it allows me to play in a fantasy world that is a lot of fun, where the director’s job is manipulating the audience. • The embarrassing box of ce failure of his movie New York, New York (1977) left director Martin Scorsese totally devastated. Some weeks later, he collapsed from a mixture of prescription drugs and sheer exhaustion.Returning to New York, he was taken to hospital, bleeding from his mouth, his nose, and his eyes. The doctors told him he was in imminent danger of a brain haemorrhage and pumped him full of cortisone and ordered total bed rest. His good friend, actor Robert De Niro, visited him at the hospital and bluntly told him to snap out of his misery and direct a movie about the boxing champion Jake LaMotta, nicknamed the Bronx Bull.De Niro had pestered the director umpteen times to read LaMotta's book titled Raging Bull, but Scorsese had always refused, due to having no interest whatsoever in sports movies. But because of De Niro's bullying persistence, Scorsese, jbhifi.com.au 26M AY 2026MOVIEFEATURE visit jbhifi .com.au/stackFrom the brink of collapse to cinematic immortality, Raging Bull is the fi lm that saved Martin Scorsese and redefi ned what a sports movie could be.Words Bob J rmly believing that his lm career was now practically over anyway, eventually agreed to direct the movie, basically just for De Niro. However, the production that the Scorsese/De Niro tandem delivered is now seen as an unforgettable masterpiece of cinema and furthermore has been voted by American movie critics to be the greatest fi lm of the 1980s.A fully recovered Scorsese would tell his friends and colleagues that, without doubt, De Niro had saved his life.Scorsese's old fi lm-school friend Mardik Martin (Mean Streets ) worked on the script, then later Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver) wrote a second draft that both De Niro and Scorsese approved of.The lm chronicles the rise and fall of Jake LaMotta (Robert De Niro), a middleweight boxing legend during the 1940s and '50s, whose bouts with Sugar Ray Robinson put him at both the top and bottom of his game. Throughout the fi lm, LaMotta is depicted as a man of excessive rage and furious jealousy stirred by both his wife Vickie (Cathy Moriarty) and younger brother Joey.Numerous actors were considered for the role of Joey but none of them seemed to t the character. Then, by chance, De Niro noticed the then little-known actor Joe Pesci on a late-night television mob drama titled The Death Collector and suggested to Scorsese that this just might be the right actor to play Joey LaMotta.Although Pesci was older than De Niro, his reading of the script convinced both De Niro and Scorsese that Joe Pesci was ideal for the young brother role.Scorsese's decision to shoot the fi lm in monochrome (a rarity then in modern-day fi lming) came from a sentence in La Motta's biography: "When I think back I feel like I'm looking at myself in an old black & white movie."Ingeniously fabricated by Scorsese, he brilliantly used various camera zooms, low-angle shots, slow motion, and close-ups which made the boxers' blood look like black ink (he borrowed Hitchcock's idea in Psycho by using chocolate syrup for the blood effects). As the production moved forward, Scorsese gradually got his movie mojo confi dence back and found complete redemption toward the end of the project. Production actually closed down for several months so that De Niro, playing the ageing La Motta, could go on a binge eating spree in order to increase his weight by 60 pounds. The intensity of De Niro is remarkable as he becomes almost unrecognisable as the bloated ex-boxer. Furthermore, his overall performance is a perfect analysis of one man's aggression and insecurity who found it impossible to control his intense rage and brutality outside of the ring. It stands as the most striking achievement of De Niro's remarkable career that deservedly won him a 'Best Actor' Oscar. • The world of anime is as wide as it is weird. There’s so much to love, and with the medium more popular than ever, theres never been a better time to dive in.Words Michael CaverzanIsekai! Literally translated as ‘another world,’ Isekai anime sees people ripped from their own worlds and transported into a completely different one. Often with an incredibly long and sometimes specifi c title, Isekai regularly shakes things up in very unexpected ways. Titles like Kemono Michi or Reborn as a Vending Machine are a great place to start. Shonen! Targeted toward young men, the Shonen genre boasts some of the biggest successes in anime. It’s an incredibly diverse space, spanning everything from the psychic-powered heroics of Mob Psycho 100, to the card-battling Egyptian gods of Yu-Gi-Oh!, and the ever-escalating power of the Super Saiyans in Dragon Ball.Slice of life! What seems pretty self-explanatory on the surface actually hides quite a bit of diversity. Slice of life anime pay special attention to what would otherwise be unimportant moments in characters’ lives. Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, a fantasy slice of life, is a delightfully weird series, while Wolf Children is a powerful look into parenthood. Mahou Shoujo! A lot of people’s favourites belong to the magical girls of the Maho Shoujo subgenre. Sailor Moon is perhaps the most well known, accompanied by classics like Cardcaptor Sakura, or more mature but just as enjoyable shows such as Madoka Magicaand Wonder Egg Priority.ANI-MAYMOVIEFEATURE visit jbhifi .com.au/stackBerserk burst onto the scene as a manga in the late '80s, quickly becoming known for its absurdly dark and twisted fantasy horror world. It’s since been adapted into anime a few times over the years, and the most recent release can be considered a contender for the best of them. Berserk: The Golden Age Arc - Memorial Edition recuts previously released fi lms into one series, while adding to scenes and tidying up some of the animation. It’s absolutely dark and terribly brutal, while weaving an inspiring tale of struggle and sacrifi ce.Almost anyone who watches anime has heard of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, and for good reason. The animation is stunning, but it’s the story that truly resonates. Frequently moving and deeply sincere, Frieren’s journey across her long life becomes a poignant reminder of the value of connection, even when it’s fl eeting. Series this universally beloved are rare, and rarer still are those that sustain such quality throughout. In that regard, Frieren succeeds completely.Best remembered from the early 1980s, Astro Boy was, for many, a fi rst introduction to Japanese animation. Accessible and guided by gentle themes, it remains a true classic with a message that continues to resonate. Adopted by the eccentric but well-meaning Dr Elefun, Astro Boy is a robot abandoned by his creator. Beyond his super strength and rocket-powered fl ight, his greatest power is his boundless kindness and selfl essness. With his adoptive father as his guide, Astro Boy learns to use his abilities to better the world around him.FOR THEHARDCORE FANSFOR THE KIDSKnowing the genres! The genres of anime go well beyond the basics of regular cinema and television, dividing things up with much greater granularity. There are the big ones, of course, like shoujo – think Sailor Moon or Ouran Highschool Host Club - that are geared toward specific demographics. But then things start to splinter off pretty quickly and soon there are subgenres within subgenres.the medium more popular than ever, theres never been quickly becoming known for its absurdly dark and twisted fantasy horror world. I grew up touring in a family band from the time I was 11, so I was already a musician, but she is the one who made me pick up a guitar and start writing songs. We were on tour and I found The Best of Loretta Lynn – on cassette - at a truck-stop, in a rack next to the cash register. We had a rule in the tour van that each person got a turn playing their tape on the long drives between shows. It was thrilling to pop in my own choice and keep the cassette in my suitcase, apart from the box of family tapes. Not long after, we played a summer festival where Loretta was headlining. Written and recorded in a 12-hour burst, it was an EP called Giddy Up and it was issued on cassette.A year later, the Aussie punk band released another cassette called Big Attraction. As Pitchfork noted, “Both EPs were textbook exercises in DIY where it was impossible to separate the content from the format; as the songs blazed by in minute-long bursts, the sound thrilled as much as the hooks.Giddy Up opened with an Amyl manifesto called Pleasure Forever. It was a 1.15-minute ball of energy that signalled the band’s approach. “Move over,” Amy Taylor sang. “I’m the new Thin Lizzy. And the debut EP concluded with a classic slice of punk called Stole My Push Bike. In just one minute, Amy delivered a simple message: “Someone stole my push bike and I want it back!”Big Attraction added six new songs to the band’s repertoire, including an ode to the Melbourne suburb where they started – Balaclava Lover Boogie. The two EPs have now been compiled on the one release to celebrate Amyl’s tenth anniversary.Big Attractions opening cut, I’m Not a Loser, saw Amy singing: “I’m poor, I’m broke, but I’m just fine.A decade on, the backyard gigs have got bigger, and Amyl are no longer poor and definitely not broke. But they’re still doing just fine. Jeff JenkinsSometimes all you want to do is get up and dance. Melanie grew up listening to Motown records with her family, including Diana Ross and The Supremes.“There are so many horrific things going on in the world,” Melanie continues, “when you make pop and dance music, it can seem almost churlish. They serve not only as reminders of classic music from a time long past, but also as points of discovery for new listeners who may not even have been born when the record was fi rst released.Shepparton band Augie Marchs Moo, You Bloody Choir is an excellent example of this. Released back in 2006, the band’s killer third album deserves its day in the sun once again.TOP TRACKS One Crowded Hour The Honey Month Bottle BabyWHAT’S THE DEAL WITH THE20TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION?To mark this signifi cant milestone, Augie March have pressed an anniversary edition in fetching alabaster coloured vinyl. The double album is housed in a freshly designed gold and maroon cover, complete with full lyrics and credit sheet. One of the most distinctive Australian records of the 2000s, it marked a creative, more assured leap for the quintet. A sprawling and emotionally charged collection of songs, chief writer Glenn Richards crafted a suite of more accessible music, all the while maintaining the band’s ‘high art’ reputation. The songs are melodic, intense, adventurous, and sincere. This is an album that demands your auditory attention from start to fi nish. Richards’ voice is magnetic as the lyrics curl from his tongue, rich in poetic imagery. Led by the soaring, panoramic melodrama ofOne Crowded Hour,the record oscillates between the Dylan-esque street poetry ofThe Cold Acreand the sea-shanty eccentricity ofThin Captain Crackers. Moo, You Bloody Choiris a 66-minute masterclass in atmospheric tension, where tracks likeVictoria’s Secrets echo the rock grandeur of Jeff Buckley, whileThe Honey Month slides into an ethereal daydream.From the boogie-woogie adrenaline ofThe Baron of Sentimentto the haunting, lo-fi sigh of the seven-minute epicClockwork, the album is thoughtful and quietly powerful. It remains the defi nitive statement of a band that mastered the art of the beautiful, intellectual burn. Their sound is a potent mix of prog rock and psychedelia; Sean calls it “progadelic”. Their third album comes with one of the year’s great titles: The Great Parrot-Ox and the Golden Egg of Empathy. The lead single, The Golden Egg of Empathy, features Willow, the daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith.THE LEMON TWIGSLook for Your Mind! SONYThe D’Addario brothers, Brian and Michael, dig The Beatles and The Beach Boys and they have jokingly called their pop sound “Mersey Beach”. The American band’s sixth studio album is a sweet treat from start to fi nish. As for the title, Brian explains, “I do think that now is a time of insanity. You really have to hold onto your own mind if you don’t wanna lose it.”THE BLACK KEYSPeaches! INERTIAFor their 14th studio album, American rock duo The Black Keys have again dug deep to cover some of their favourite songs, including Neil Young’s It’s a Dream, Frank Zappa’s Tell Me You Love Me, and R.L. Burnside’s Fireman Ring the Bell, as well as You Got to Lose, which was originally recorded by George Thorogood and The Destroyers in 1977. The result sounds like classic Black Keys. Remember that classic hit What’s Up?She then wrote and produced a stack of hits for other artists, including Pink’s Get the Party Started and Christina Aguilera’s Beautiful. This new solo album features Perry’s version of Beautiful. There is also a companion documentary called Let It Die Here, which covers Perry’s remarkable life, and a new 4 Non Blondes is scheduled for later this year.BLEACHERSEveryone for Ten Minutes INERTIAJack Antonoff is a 13-time Grammy winner, best known for writing and producing hits for Taylor Swift, Lorde, and Sabrina Carpenter. But he also has his own band, Bleachers. Everyone for Ten Minutes is their fi fth studio album. They cite the classic John Hughes teen fl icks as an infl uence and, approproriately, the new record has “moments where it briefl y peers into darkness, but it’s essentially an optimistic record that feels lovestruck and hopeful”.JOSH GROBANCinematic INERTIAFor his tenth studio album – his fi rst in six years - America’s Josh Groban is off to the movies, capturing “the nostalgia, the drama, and the romance” as he covers a set of soundtrack smashes, including Casablanca’s As Time Goes By, James Bond’s Skyfall, Ghost’s Unchained Melody (a duet with Jennifer Hudson), Against All Odds, and Can You Feel the Love Tonight from The Lion King. It’s like a dream.”SOCIAL DISTORTIONBorn to Kill ROCKETSocial Distortion started rocking way back in 1978. Bruce Springsteen has called them “one of the not-heralded enough great American rock bands”. Born to Kill is their eighth studio album, their fi rst in 15 years. It’s also the band’s fi rst studio album to feature drummer David Hidalgo Jr, the son of the Los Lobos guitarist and singer. At the age of 93, Willie is releasing his 79th solo studio album and remembering a time when he was “just a kid movin’ to Tennessee, with an old guitar and eyes full of stars, chasin’ a crazy dream”. The record features I Can’t Read Your Mind, a song that Willie wrote with Bob Dylan and producer Buddy Cannon. Three chords and truth.AUSSIE RELEASESEMMA LOUISESunshine for Happiness INERTIAFollowing her Dumbcollaboration with Flume, Queensland’s Emma Louise releases her fourth solo studio album, Sunshine for Happiness, a collection of ethereal pop, “a breakthrough that followed a breakdown”. After releasing her third album, Lilac Everything, the singer-songwriter was burned out, and she checked herself into a facility in Los Angeles. She thought she was done with music, but she was drawn to the hospital’s piano, and the songs poured out of her. The result is a stunning set of songs about mortality, grief, love, and healing.RACHAEL FAHIMWho You Are UNIVERSALAfter hearing Kasey Chambers’ Not Pretty Enough, Sydney’s Rachael Fahim was inspired to make her own country music. Now she’s releasing her debut album, featuring Too Damn Hot, a number one smash on the Australian Country Airplay chart. It’s a powerful piece of defi ance, with the singer declaring, “You’re too damn hot to cry, don’t call back – he’s overrated.” And the title track is another tale of love gone wrong. “Screamin’ at the top of my lungs ’cause I hate you for leading me on. And I can’t believe that I put up with you for so long, now I see you for who you are.” Rachael Fahim is a new country star.THE JUNGLE GIANTSExperiencing Feelings of Joy ROCKETThe Jungle Giants’ last album, 2021’s Love Signs, topped the charts... and then singer and songwriter Sam Hales started to struggle. “I’d overextended and kind of cooked it,” he admits. But then came a moment of self-discovery. “That’s where the joy comes from,” he says, referencing the Brisbane band’s fth studio album, “having this unwavering hope even after experiencing adversity. This record is what everything culminated in for me, because I’m so in love with it and I’m so addicted to music again.” Check out the powerful fi rst single, Tell Me How It Feels.TRIALSHendle UNIVERSALDaniel Hendle Rankine is the Adelaide rapper who’s better known as Trials. After working with Funkoars and A.B. Original, Trials is now stepping out on his own. “A solo record is something I’ve always needed to do as these topics speak to so many people and it was important that I told my story my way alone”, he says. “I’ve been fortunate to play so many parts for so many people and projects, but I owed it to myself and to my story to take the sole responsibility of turning that pain and passion into song... it’s unashamedly me and my story in all its fractured pieces.”st259_044-045_MUSIC-WhatsOutThisMonth-02-PROOFED-AF.indd 2st259_044-045_MUSIC-WhatsOutThisMonth-02-PROOFED-AF.indd 2 20/4/2026 12:41 pm20/4/2026 12:41 pm

  • Buying a new smart TV is exciting but can also be a bit overwhelming, especially with all the new tech, features, and jargon. To make your TV shopping experience easier, here are ten FAQs answered in simple terms.Words Scott HockingWhat size TV should I get for my space?A good rule of thumb is to match screen size to how far away you sit. For 4K TVs, the ideal viewing distance is roughly 1 to 1.5 times the screen size – so for a 65-inch TV, that’s about 1.6 to 2.5m. Bigger is generally better, especially for 4K content, which can still look sharp up close. However free-to-air TV can look a bit softer when viewed on large screens. What’s the difference between all these display types? The latest display tech always raises questions about what acronyms like QLED actually mean. In simple terms, newer tech such as Mini-LED or QD-enhanced displays are designed to improve brightness, contrast, and colour accuracy (see page 8 for more). The best choice often comes down to where you’ll put the TV. Brighter displays suit well-lit rooms, while contrast-focused screens like OLED shine in darker spaces. Will this TV look good in a bright room?If your home is open-plan or gets a lot of sunlight, look for a TV that has high peak brightness (measured in nits) and anti-refl ection features. These help to reduce glare and keep colours looking vivid during daytime viewing. What is HDR and do I need it?HDR (High Dynamic Range) improves contrast and colour, making bright scenes brighter and dark scenes more detailed. Most smart TVs and streaming platforms support formats like HDR10, Dolby Vision or HLG, and it’s defi nitely a must-have feature – especially for watching movies and gaming. You will notice a big difference! Is this TV good for watching sport?Fast moving sports like footy or Formula 1 are often a big priority for TV buyers. That’s where motion-enhancing features come into play. Look for TVs with high refresh rates and dedicated motion or sports modes that can reduce blur and keep the action silky smooth.jbhifi.com.au 4M AY 2026TECHFEATURESMARTER TV SHOPPINGyour questions answeredst259_097-095_TECH-Smart TV FAQs-PROOFED-AF.indd 1st259_097-095_TECH-Smart TV FAQs-PROOFED-AF.indd 1 20/4/2026 12:53 pm20/4/2026 12:53 pm

  • jbhifi.com.au 6M AY 2026TECHFEATURE visit jbhifi .com.au/stackSmart TV glossaryHere are some of the more common terms you’ll encounter when considering a smart TV upgrade.4K Ultra HD (UHD) – A high resolution with four times the detail of Full HD.ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) –Automatically switches the TV into gaming mode when needed.Backlight – The light source behind some screens that affects brightness and contrast.BT.2020 – A wide colour standard that allows TVs to display a broader, more lifelike range of colours.Dolby Atmos – A surround sound format that creates a more immersive, 3D audio experience.Dolby Vision – An advanced HDR format that adjusts picture quality scene-by-scene.Gaming Mode – Reduces input lag for faster, more responsive gaming.HDMI – The main cable connection for devices like game consoles, laptops soundbars and Blu-ray players.HDMI eARC – Sends high-quality audio from your TV to a sound system.HDR (High Dynamic Range) – Enhances contrast and colour for brighter highlights and deeper blacks.HDR10/HDR10+ – Common HDR formats, with HDR10+ adding dynamic scene-by-scene optimisation (like Dolby Vision).Input lag – The delay between pressing a button and seeing the action on screen.Local dimming – Adjusts LED backlight zones to improve contrast and black levels.Motion smoothing – Software that reduces blur in fast-moving scenes like sport or action movies.Nits (peak brightness) – A measurement of how bright a TV can get – important for best HDR performance.Operating System (OS) – The TV’s interface and app platform (e.g. Google TV, Tizen, webOS).Quantum dots (QD) – Tiny nanocrystals used to improve colour accuracy and brightness.Refresh Rate (Hz) – How many times per second the image updates; higher rates mean smoother motion.Smart TV – A TV with built-in internet access and apps like Netfl ix and YouTube.Soundbar – A compact external speaker that improves TV audio quality.Upscaling – Improves lower-resolution content to look closer to 4K quality.VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) – Syncs the TV’s refresh rate with a gaming console to reduce screen tearing.Viewing angle – How well the picture quality holds up when viewed from the side.Is this TV good for gaming?Features like HDMI 2.1, 144Hz refresh rates (or higher), and low input lag are important for gaming. These help deliver smoother gameplay and faster response times, especially for next-gen consoles. If gaming is a priority, it’s worth choosing a TV that supports them. What apps and smart features does the TV have? Most smart TV operating systems come with popular streaming apps preloaded – think Netfl ix, Stan, Disney+, and YouTube - and adding others is a simple process.Voice control is another desirable feature of smart TVs, letting you search content or control your TV hands-free. Many smart TVs support popular voice assistants like Google and Alexa, and can also be used to control compatible smart home devices, such as viewing a security camera’s live feed.Do I need a soundbar or are the TV speakers good enough?TVs are getting a lot thinner, so built-in speakers can be limited. While most TVs sound fi ne for everyday viewing – and many can now simulate surround sound - adding a soundbar can make a big difference for movies, sport, and music. A big TV demands big sound to complete the home theatre experience! Is this TV energy efficient? It pays to check the TV’s energy star rating to get an idea of running costs. More energy ef cient TVs can help reduce power bills over time, especially if the TV is used daily. Energy effi ciency is relative to the size of the TV – for example, a 55-inch TV generally uses less power than a 75-inch TV.Will it fit my setup and what extras do I need? From wall mounting to connectivity, you want to make sure everything works seamlessly at home. Check whether a wall mount bracket is included, how many HDMI ports the TV has for connecting external devices like a laptop or gaming console, and if the TV will connect easily to Wi-Fi and other devices. • NEW TV TECH CHECK2026 brings RGB Mini LED displays, representing a big leap forward for how a TV looks. RGB Mini LED isn’t just an upgrade; it’s a whole new and smart way of lighting up your TV. Words Scott HockingWhat is RGB Mini LED, and how is it different from regular Mini LED?Traditional Mini LED TVs use a white backlight behind the panel, with colour fi lters creating the image. RGB Mini LED fl ips this approach, using tiny red, green, and blue LEDs to generate colour directly at the source.Using white light and colour lters can limit colour accuracy and ef ciency, so RGB Mini LED removes that step. By controlling red, green, and blue light independently at a pixel level, it can deliver more precise colours, improved contrast, and better energy ef ciency by reducing wasted light. You’ll notice a brighter, more vibrant picture with richer colours and deeper blacks compared with regular Mini LED backlighting. Highlights will stand out more clearly, while blooming and washed-out areas are signifi cantly reduced, so everything from sunsets to shadow detail looks a lot more natural and lifelike. What about Micro RGB?Micro RGB – used in some 2026 Samsung TVs – takes things further by using even smaller, more densely packed RGB LEDs for ner light control. This can improve colour precision, contrast, and detail even further, pushing LED performance closer to OLED-like accuracy while maintaining high brightness. Why is it a game changer for TVs in 2026?This is the closest LED backlighting has ever come to OLED-level colour performance, but with the brightness Mini LED is renowned for. That means much better viewing in bright living rooms, less glare during daytime viewing, and more cinematic impact for movie nights. You get the best of both worlds – stunning colour accuracy and serious brightness, without the usual trade-offs.Moreover, when settling in for a movie, RGB Mini LED TVs create a picture that’s more accurate to the colour grading intended by the fi lmmaker, making them a great fi t for movie buffs and home theatre setups. NEW TV TECH CHECKIntroducing RGB Mini LED Introducing RGB Mini LED jbhifi.com.au 8M AY 2026TECHFEATURE visit jbhifi .com.au/stackHow to tell a QLED from a QNED, OLED, and ULEDQLED (Quantum Dot LED)QLED TVs use quantum dots to boost colour and brightness in an LED panel. They deliver vivid colours, high brightness, and top performance in well-lit rooms. Samsung’s Neo QLED TVs add Mini LED backlighting for tighter light control, improving contrast and reducing glare.QNED (Quantum NanoCell LED)LG’s QNED TVs combine Mini LED backlighting, quantum dots, and NanoCell fi ltering for improved colour accuracy and contrast. They are brighter than standard LED and can boost HDR content with strong colours, making them a great option for rooms with lots of natural light.OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode)OLED panels don’t need backlighting, as each pixel self-lights and can turn off completely, delivering perfect blacks and incredible contrast, making them the go-to for premium TV displays. They also offer wide viewing angles and smooth motion. Samsung’s QD-OLED models add quantum dots for even brighter, richer colour.ULED (Ultra LED)Hisense’s ULED is an enhanced LED system combining local dimming, quantum dots, and motion tech. Newer models often use Mini LED for better contrast and brightness. They are a good pick for budget-conscious buyers wanting strong all-round performance.st259_093_TECH-RGB Mini LED explainer-PROOFED-AF.indd 1st259_093_TECH-RGB Mini LED explainer-PROOFED-AF.indd 1 21/4/2026 2:09 pm21/4/2026 2:09 pm

  • Built on trust, teamwork, and just a little banter, husband-and-wife JB TV installation team Simon and Liesl are smashing install goals on the Gold Coast.Words Paul Jones”Itseems like a lot of people are going bigger these days, says Liesl, one half of the JB installation team, chatting to STACK on the phone. The other half, Simon, is busy negotiating the Gold Coast traf c on the drive to another job. “Younger audiences, especially, are going 75-inch and bigger. 75-inch is the new 65-inch.Liesl and Simon migrated with their young children from South Africa 15 years ago. Once in Australia, they established an audiovisual company, and for the last two years, their focus has been on JB Hi-Fi TV and audio installs. Working and living together is no mean feat, and it may not be for every couple. So, what’s their secret?“We’ve been working together for so long that we know what each others jobs are. We play to each other’s strengths, explains Liesl.“I think a lot of people, especially the elderly, are at ease when they see me walk in with Simon.“I do the chatty, friendly stuff while Simon gets on with the job. We’re so used to working together that if we do occasionally get frustrated on the job for some reason, we hold it until we get in the car,” she laughs.According to Liesl, the average TV installation takes only an hour, including cable concealment if the customer opts for that service. “Because we’re a two-person team, while Simon is doing the wall mounting for the TV and the cable conceal, I’ll be doing the TV setup. We’re done within the hour,” she says. Even though the job is a relatively quick process, there are a few things customers can do to ensure the installation runs smoothly before Simon and Liesl arrive. “If people want us to connect streaming services and things like that, they’ll need their usernames and passwords ready,” outlines Liesl.“If customers have got DVD players and Xboxes that need connecting, we need to know beforehand to get the cables down the wall. “Sometimes, as we’re about to leave, we’re told there's a DVD that needs to be installed! We then have to take the TV back off the wall to get the cables through.“They also need to check to see if they need longer HDMI cables. That’s an extra they’ll need to supply. This is something that happens quite often – people want to put up a 75-inch TV (or above) and they’ve only got a one-metre HDMI cable!” JB Hi-Fi also offers additional services for customers looking to have a TV installed. These include the aforementioned cable concealment (if your walls are solid brick, cables will be surface-mounted and concealed in conduit), and the removal of an old TV to an e-waste recycling facility. For an additional charge, the installation team can even set up streaming channels for customers on-site.Theres always the temptation to attempt a TV installation yourself. We’ve been there. After three hours, multiple holes in the plasterboard wall, and a bracket that was out of level by 15mm, we threw in the towel. Some things are just best left to the experts, especially when you’re hanging something on a wall that costs thousands of dollars. If you’re still unsure as to whether to install a TV yourself or call in the professionals, Liesl tells us a story as they pull up to their next job that may sway your decision.“We went to one job, and the lady showed us where to put the TV and said they’d just had the wall rebuilt,” says Liesl. “I asked why it had been rebuilt, and she told me her husband was sure he could do the job, and he hung the TV himself. They went out shopping, and when they returned, the TV was on the oor with half of the wall!”After Liesl and Simon had hung the TV correctly on the wall and completed the installation, the customer let out an audible sigh of relief.“The lady turned to me, put a hand on my arm, while eyeballing her husband, and told us he is banned forever from even thinking about putting up a TV,” Liesl laughs.“She loudly declared that any future TV installations would be left to us, the professionals, to make sure the job is done right!” jbhifi.com.au 30M AY 2026TECHFEATURE visit jbhifi .com.au/stackSimon and LieslJB Hi-Fi offers installations for TVs, audio systems, computers, mobile phones, tablets, smart home systems, Wi-Fi, projectors, and home appliances. For more information, ask in-store or head to:www.jbhifi .com.au/pages/installationswww.jbhifi .com.au/pages/installationsTheThe Dream Dream TeamTeamst259_071_TECH-TV Installation-PROOFED-AF.indd 1st259_071_TECH-TV Installation-PROOFED-AF.indd 1 20/4/2026 12:46 pm20/4/2026 12:46 pm

  • You’ve just taken delivery of your new smart TV, so it’s movie time, right? Absolutely! But you may want – or need - to consider some extras fi rst to complete or enhance the experience.Words Bec SummerAC C E S S O RY NECESSITIES!jbhifi.com.au 32M AY 2026TECHFEATURE visit jbhifi .com.au/stackSmart TVs aren’t just screens – they’re also hubs for all sorts of gear. You could be plugging in a games console, a soundbar, a 4K Blu-ray player, a streaming box, or even a PC, and this is where HDMI comes in. But not all HDMI cables are created equal...While spending big on a premium cable won’t magically improve picture quality, if you’re running newer hardware, in particular anything that outputs in 4K resolution at high frame rates such as next-gen consoles, you’ll want at least an HDMI 2.1 cable. Or if you really wish to futureproof, the recently introduced HDMI 2.2. Why? Well, 2.1 cables and above support higher bandwidths, delivering features like 4K at 120Hz rather than dumbing down what you’re seeing to lower resolutions or frame rates. While a standard HDMI cable will handle everyday viewing perfectly well, you could miss out on some of your TV’s capabilities.Ultimately, it’s good planning to keep a spare HDMI cable or two around, as there’s nothing worse than getting new tech home then discovering you can’t hook it up!Wall mounting is a great way to streamline your screen setup, and even to do away with – or free up - bulky furniture. Plus, it really gives your room more of a home cinema feel. There are several mount types to consider. A xed mount keeps your TV fl ush to the wall, while tilting mounts allow you to angle the screen slightly. Meanwhile, full-motion (or articulating) mounts let you swivel your TV for fl exible viewing. For a small initial outlay, the benefi ts are great. You free up valuable surface space, you can improve viewing angles in tricky rooms, plus it also creates a cleaner look, especially when cables are run through the wall.Wall mounts are also perfect for lifestyle TVs with ambient display modes, such as Samsung’s The Frame, turning your screen into an art gallery. Not sure where to start? The experts at JB have you covered, with a professional installation service to do all the work for you – see page 30.Your TV comes with a remote, but what happens if your dog decides to chomp on your channel changer?Remotes can also be easily lost – or accidentally sat upon or stepped on. So, it’s good to know you can get a replacement – or more prepared types can get a spare, just in case. JB have them for major brands like Samsung, Sony, LG, TCL, and Hisense, or alternatively you could go for a universal remote.A universal remote allows you to control more than one device from a single unit. They usually take a bit of programming, but once set up, it can be an utter joy to have just one remote to rule them all. While smart TVs look phenomenal, sometimes their sound doesn’t always have the oomph to match, especially in these days of wafer-thin screens. A soundbar can deliver room-fi lling audio with clarity, depth, and punchier bass – all from a single, compact unit. Some even come with wireless subwoofers, for beefi er bass. They’re also a doddle to connect, as most can be set up with just a single HDMI cable – no clutter, no fuss!Plus, if your TV supports HDMI eARC, you can revel in uncompressed Dolby Atmos cinematic audio and enjoy immersive multi-dimensional sound.Whether you’re watching movies or TV shows, or gaming, a soundbar provides a massive upgrade in sonic enjoyment. • Wearable fi tness tech has evolved fast, and the choice between a smart ring and a fi tness tracker band now comes down to comfort, depth of insights, and how you want to wear your device. Both can track activity, sleep, and recovery, but they can suit different users. Let’s break it down.Words James O’ConnorForm factor and comfortSmart rings like the Oura Ring 4 and Ultrahuman Ring Air sit discreetly on your nger, while tracker bands like the WHOOP range are worn on the wrist. Both are screen-free devices that work with a companion app, reducing distractions. If you prefer a wearable that’s lightweight and discreet, a smart ring has obvious appeal. It’s easy to wear 24/7, especially for sleep monitoring, and doesn’t compete for wrist space with a traditional watch. Oura and Ultrahuman both offer sizing kits to help you nd the perfect fi t.Tracker bands offer a more fl exible fi t and may suit users who don’t like wearing rings during lifting or high-contact training. Exercise, recovery, and wellbeingBoth devices cover the basics, including activity, heart rate, sleep, and recovery, but they approach health differently.Smart rings tend to focus on passive, all-day health tracking. The subscription-based Oura Ring 4* is particularly strong on readiness, stress and sleep insights, while Ultrahumans Ring Air adds metabolic and lifestyle guidance, including stimulant timing, movement nudges, and womens cycle tracking, without a mandatory subscription.Tracker bands often lean harder into performance and recovery. But if you want sleep data that’s tied directly to performance, a tracker band may have the edge.Which should you buy?If you want discreet health tracking, better sleep comfort and minimalist design, a smart ring is a compelling choice. For those serious about training, recovery, and coaching, a tracker band may be the better t.And should you want advanced performance tracking with longevity-focused insights, premium wearables like WHOOP Life sit in a category of their own. Its 9-star energy rating gives you the peace of mind that regular use won’t drive up your electricity bill too much, despite all its bells and whistles. That means you can run your dryer more often throughout the winter months. It cleans itselfThis dryer is low-maintenance thanks to its auto-cleaning condenser. It will periodically – and conveniently – run its own internal wash cycle to keep the condenser clean and the dryer in good working order.LG WX10-1412MB Series 10 12kg AI Front Load WasherSuper-fast washing12kg AI Front Load Washer12kg AI Front Load WasherLG DXH9-10MB LAUNDRY MASTERSst259_063_TECH-Whites – LG MasterChef promo-PROOFED-AF.indd 1st259_063_TECH-Whites – LG MasterChef promo-PROOFED-AF.indd 1 21/4/2026 11:49 am21/4/2026 11:49 am
