What began as a toy line built to sell Hasbro figures became a saga of good versus evil, loyalty, and sacrifice - set to a theme tune still lodged in the brains of anyone who grew up in the '80s.Transformers has endured because it never stood still. From the original cartoon and Marvel comics through to Michael Bay's blockbuster reinvention, the Unicron Trilogy, Bumblebee's soulful reboot, and today's steady run of games, toys, and animated spin-offs, the franchise keeps finding new ways to appeal to fresh audiences. And it does this without losing what made it work in the first place: Optimus Prime's quiet, unwavering moral compass. The appeal of Transformers transcends generations – plenty of fans today weren’t even born when Optimus first rolled into frame. So this issue, we're marking 40 years of Autobots and Decepticons, the toys that started a war, and the stories that turned those toys into genuine pop culture mythology. • Forty years after it fi rst transformed the big screen, Transformers: The Movie is ready to roll out again.Words Glenn CochraneFor a lot of Gen Xers, Saturday mornings were spent watching the Transformers animated series. And then there was Transformers: The Movie, a cinematic event that would have kids talking in schoolyards for months.Released in 1986, the movie arrived at a pivotal point in the animated series, effectively bridging the gap between its second and third seasons. Rather than simply giving fans a feature-length version of the TV show, The Movie expanded the Transformers universe, jumped the story forward to 2005, and introduced a whole new generation of characters. It was also considerably darker than the series that preceded it.The arrival of Unicron, a planet-sized Transformer voiced by screen legend Orson Welles, provided an enormous threat, but it was the fate of Optimus Prime that left the deepest mark. His death was an extraordinary moment for jbhifi.com.au 6OCTOBER 2026There are plenty of toy franchises that have come and gone over the decades, but Transformers has managed something remarkable: it has remained just as much fun to play with as it is to watch, read about, and collect. And perhaps the secret is right there in the name. There's something so satisfying about taking a vehicle, aircraft, or other piece of machinery and, with a few twists, turns, and clicks, revealing the robot hidden inside. It's part puzzle, part magic trick, and part action fi gure, all rolled into one. Better still, you get to perform MOVIEFEATUREvisit jbhifi .com.au/stackTransformers: The Movieis out Dec 2the transformation yourself. In playground speak, that's "epic!"But Transformers isn't simply about the mechanics. The toys become more engaging because they have personalities. A fi gure isn't just a cool-looking robot on a shelf, it's Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Starscream, or Grimlock. You can recreate a favourite scene, invent a new battle, or simply transform the fi gure back and forth because, well, it's incredibly satisfying. That's where Transformershas always had an advantage. The characters can exist in your imagination long before you see them on a screen. A toy can become the starting point for an entire adventure, with the transformation itself becoming part of the storytelling. And the formula is remarkably fl exible. Change the setting, redesign the characters, introduce a new generation of robots and suddenly Transformersfeels fresh again without losing what made it special in the fi rst place. For longtime fans, there's also the joy of rediscovery. A familiar character can bring back memories of childhood, while a new design or new interpretation can offer something completely different to appreciate. You can be in it for the nostalgia, the collecting, the stories, the engineering, or simply the sheer spectacle.Perhaps that's the real reason Transformers has lasted. It doesn't ask you to choose between being a fan of toys, movies, animation, or comics. It gives you an excuse to enjoy all of them. They're robots. They transform. They look incredibly cool. Sometimes, that's all you need.a generation of young viewers, transforming a familiar Saturday morning hero into a piece of childhood history. It was a movie unafraid to take risks.Along the way came a spectacular roll call of new Autobots and Decepticons, including Hot Rod, Ultra Magnus, Arcee, Springer, Kup, Cyclonus, and Scourge, while the voice cast featured Leonard Nimoy, Eric Idle, Judd Nelson, and Robert Stack, alongside many of the series' returning performers. And then there was the soundtrack. Featuring songs from the likes of Stan Bush, Lion, and Spectre General, it gave The Moviean unmistakably '80s rock'n'roll attitude, with The Touch becoming an enduring anthem for Transformers fans.40 years later, Transformers: The Movieremains a remarkable time capsule of the decade and a landmark moment in the franchise. It was bigger, louder, and more ambitious than anything the TV series could deliver, and for a generation of fans, it was their fi rst taste of just how spectacular Transformerscould be.Now it's ready to transform your home entertainment setup once again, with its arrival on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD. • MORE THAN MEETS THE EYEFew pop culture creations have transformed quite as successfully as Transformers. What began in the 1980s as a range of transforming robot toys quickly became a global phenomenon, spawning animated series, comics, video games, blockbuster movies and, of course, generations of collectors. At its heart, the concept remains brilliantly simple: robots from the distant planet Cybertron can transform into vehicles, weapons, and other forms, allowing them to disguise themselves while bringing an irresistible mechanical magic to the everyday world. But Transformers has always been about more than the transformation itself. The battle between the heroic Autobots and villainous Decepticons has introduced fans to an enormous cast of characters, each with their own distinctive personalities, powers, and designs. Optimus Prime stands as the franchise's enduring symbol of leadership and heroism, while characters such as Bumblebee, Megatron, and Starscream have become pop culture icons in their own right.More than four decades on, the appeal shows no signs of slowing down. Part nostalgia, part character fandom, and part appreciation for some seriously cool robot designs, Transformers continues to welcome new generations while giving longtime fans plenty of reasons to return.MERCHMONTHMERCHMONTHof theof theIn Transformers mythology, the Primes are legendary fi gures who played a foundational role in the history of Cybertron. They are closely connected to the origins of the Transformers and have traditionally represented some of the greatest ideals, powers, and responsibilities of their people. That makes the Primes more than just another group of Transformers. They are part of the franchise's deep mythology, with their stories helping explain where Cybertronian society came from and how its legendary heroes came to be.The Age of the Primes collection celebrates this rich history with a range of fi gures inspired by characters from across the Transformers universe. For longtime fans, they're an opportunity to revisit some of the franchise's deeper lore. For newcomers, they're a great way to discover the characters and stories that have helped make Transformers such an enduring phenomenon. In the ’80s, a must-have for Transformers collectors was the Rubsign, a heat-sensitive sticker that revealed a hidden symbol when rubbed. It’s easy to romanticise that period of time (the clothes, the cars, and that mid-century modern aesthetic), but the series also shows why we shouldn’t romanticise it. • At just 20 years old, Parsons makes his feature filmmaking debut with Backrooms, expanding his hugely popular Kane Pixels YouTube series into an ambitious feature courtesy of A24.The original concept of The Backroomsbegan with a simple idea: if you somehow “no-clip” out of reality, you might fall into an endless maze of bland, abandoned rooms. Parsons was just 16 when he created The Backrooms (Found Footage) as a visual effects test using Blender and Adobe After Effects. Now, the final season sees the cast saying goodbye to a defining career chapter. For Sam Heughan, who has played Jamie Fraser since the beginning, the farewell carries mixed emotions. “How do you say goodbye? When I was Jamie, there wasn’t a separation, but now I look back at this character, and I think he’s always there,” he says, adding, “Now I’ve got a full Jamie Fraser outfit at home.”Caitríona Balfe, meanwhile, has spent eight seasons bringing Claire's journey through time to life. “I think one of the things that's hit me the most is that Claire has been my greatest teacher. I learned so much over the years from her.”But Outlander has always been about more than its central romance. For the actors, wrapping the final season meant saying goodbye to their characters and the people and places that became part of their lives.“One of the things I miss most is standing out in the forest, or the hills,” says Balfe. “Scotland is one of the most beautiful countries, second to Ireland,” she adds with a wink. While saying goodbye to Outlander is bittersweet, fans don't have to leave the Highlands behind. Natasha Henstridge stars as alien-human hybrid Sil, created using extraterrestrial DNA and soon pursued by a government team, while the sequel unleashes an even nastier threat following a Mars mission gone wrong. Both fi lms are restored from their original camera negatives and presented in 4K UHD with Dolby Vision/HDR10, DTS-HD 5.1, and LPCM 2.0 audio. Bonus highlights include commentaries, documentaries, H.R. Giger featurettes, interviews, and uncut footage. The lavish fi ve-disc set also includes posters, lobby cards, press kits, a hardcover photo book, and Sveta Shubina artwork. Fun fact: A very young Michelle Williams plays young Sil. THE HUNTEDIf you love First Blood and The Fugitive, The Hunted is for you. Cut from the same cloth as both, William Friedkin’s gritty wilderness manhunt thriller is a brutal, uncompromising adventure. Tommy Lee Jones stars as a veteran tracker tasked with hunting down a former Special Forces soldier, played by Benicio Del Toro, who has disappeared into the Oregon wilderness after a violent breakdown. What follows is a tense game of survival between two highly trained men who know exactly how to hunt and how to kill. This limited edition presents the fi lm in stunning 4K UHD and Blu-ray with Dolby Vision/HDR10, plus audio commentary, interviews, featurettes, trailers, and a 52-page hardcover booklet.THE KINGDOM TRILOGYLong before prestige TV became a thing, Lars von Trier’s The Kingdomwas serving up surrealist hospital nightmares that could sit comfortably alongside Twin Peaks as some of the most infl uential television of the 1990s. Set inside Copenhagen’s haunted Royal Hospital, the series follows patients, doctors, and staff as supernatural forces begin bleeding into everyday life. Stephen King was so enamoured with the series that he remade it as Stephen King’s Kingdom Hospital, recently released on Blu-ray by ViaVision. This collection brings together all three seasons, including the long-awaited third series, which arrived 25 years later to critical acclaim. Packed with dark comedy, bizarre characters, and supernatural mystery, the set includes new and archival special features and high-defi nition presentations across its extensive 4K UHD and Blu-ray collection.Out Oct 28

  • Blood Simple (1984) is a neo-noir fi lm written and produced by brothers Joel and Ethan Coen. As this was their fi rst attempt at making a feature fi lm, they took wise advice from their close friend Sam Raimi, who had written and directed his successful 1981 horror fi lm The Evil Dead.Raimi suggested that the Coens go door-to-door showing potential investors a short ‘three-minute trailer’ for the fi lm they planned to make. Subsequently, in a little over a year, the brothers raised $750,000, which was enough to begin production on their low-budget movie. The fi nished fi lm was then brought to L.A. and shown to the major movie studios, who all passed on releasing what they considered to be a brutally violent movie. However, later that jbhifi.com.au 16OCTOBER 2026MOVIEFEATURE visit jbhifi .com.au/stackyear, the now-determined Coens took their intricately plotted fi lm to the New York Film Festival, and then to the Toronto Film Festival, where a deal was eventually made with Circle Films, who decided to distribute the movie domestically. The fi lm’s title is based on a phrase from the Dashiell Hammett novel Red Harvest, in which ‘blood simple’ is a term coined to describe the fearful mindset people enter after prolonged immersion in violent situations.Blood Simple, set in Texas, opens inside a car driving through pouring rain. Abby (Frances McDormand) tells the driver, Ray (John Getz), that she has decided to leave her hot-tempered, jealous husband. The fi lm revolves around a love triangle between Abby, her husband Marty (Dan Hedaya), who runs a dingy roadhouse, and her lover Ray, a bartender working at Marty’s bar. However, unbeknown to the couple, the brooding and bitterly resentful Marty has hired a lowlife, corpulent private detective, Loren Visser (M. Emmett Walsh), to follow the adulterous couple and confi rm Marty’s suspicions. The couple pull into a motel, where Visser is able to shoot compromising photos and present them to Marty. The now enraged husband hires Visser again, offering him $10,000 to murder both Abby and Ray. Visser tells Marty to go fi shing upstate and that he will call him when the job is done. When Marty returns to his offi ce after his fi shing break, Visser hands him a photo of the apparently bloodied bodies of both Abby and Ray.Chaos now ensues in a maelstrom of ‘blood simple’ misunderstandings involving each character, leading to abject violence and murder. The four main actors, who were all practically unknown when the fi lm was fi rst released, delivered outstanding performances, especially M. Emmett Walsh and Frances McDormand.Originally, the role of Abby was offered to actress Holly Hunter, who had to turn it down. Instead, she persuaded her roommate Frances to audition for the part. The following year, McDormand married Joel Coen and went on to win four Oscars.Blood Simple hit screens in 1984 and proved extremely popular with audiences, so much so that the Coen brothers would never have to beg for movie money again. Original poster artOf all the acclaimed fi lms the Coen brothers have made throughout their careers, none are as intrinsically connected to Blood Simpleas Fargo. Cut from the same cloth, both are darkly comic crime stories populated by ordinary people whose bad decisions spiral spectacularly out of control. They share a fascination with greed, deception, and murder, while balancing brutal violence with an almost absurd sense of humour. Even the snow-covered landscapes of Fargofeel like a colder cousin to the dusty Texas setting of Blood Simple. Released 12 years apart, both fi lms demonstrate the Coens’ unique talent for fi nding dark comedy in human folly.Dark, twisted, and unmistakably Coen, Blood Simplearrived in 1984 and introduced the world to two fi lmmakers who were just getting started. Words Bob JDan HedayaBelow: Frances McDormand Coen brothersFun fact: The Coens would later go on to write and produce Miller's Crossing (1990), which was loosely based on another Dashiell Hammett novel.BloodSimpleis out Oct 28on 4K

  • 21FEATURE TECH THE ACTION ADVENTURER THE CAMERAWhen you’re fl ying down a trail, paddling a kayak, or scrambling up a track, stopping to carefully frame every shot rather defeats the point. The DJI Osmo 360 II Action Camera fl ips things around: capture everything fi rst, then decide where the camera should ‘look’ afterwards. It records native 8K/60fps 360-degree video using dual 1/1.1-inch square CMOS sensors, with up to 14.5 stops of dynamic range. That high-resolution spherical footage can be reframed into a conventional fl at video after the adventure, while Spotlight Follow can lock onto a chosen subject and export subject-following footage up to 4K/30fps. One ride can become a forward-facing trail shot, a reaction shot, and a sweeping reveal without asking you to nail all three in real time. The Osmo 360 II is ready for an adventure. Waterproofi ng to ten metres without a case covers plenty of surf, paddle, and pool action, while user-replaceable outer lens elements provide back-up when rocks, branches, and backpacks enter the equation. There’s 105GB of available built-in storage, AI SuperNight 2.0 for low-light scenes, and gesture, voice, and selfi e-stick twist controls for starting a shot when your hands are busy. That means fewer stops, less fi ddling, and more time enjoying the moment.DJI Osmo 360 II Action CameraGot your eye on the original DJI Osmo 360? Here’s what the Osmo 360 II brings to the adventure: Faster 360 video:Native 8K jumps from 50fps to 60fps for smoother fast-moving action. More dynamic range: Up from 13.5 to 14.5 stops to retain more highlight and shadow detail. Better after dark: AI SuperNight gets upgraded to SuperNight 2.0. New Spotlight Follow: Automatically tracks a subject, with 4K fl at-video exports. Tougher, replaceable lenses:Improved scratch resistance, with damaged outer lenses now user replaceable. Quicker connections:NFC joins a new dual-direction quick-release mounting design.WHAT’S NEWWITH THE DJIOSMO 360 II?WHERE WILL YOU TAKE IT?Mountain-bike trails, hikes, surfi ng, snorkelling, kayaking, camping, motorbike rides, and off-road adventures are obvious territory. It also earns its keep on road trips: mount it securely and the same 360 clip can take in the road, the landscape, and the crew sharing the trip, instead of forcing you to pick one view. 360 capture can also turn a simple group moment into something you can pan around later, rather than another static squeeze-everyone-in shot.CAPTURE FIRST, FRAME LATERMount the camera on a bike or use a compatible selfi e stick and focus on the fun part. It sees in every direction, so the best angle doesn’t have to be decided in the moment. On a trail, the fi nished edit might charge forward through the trees, swing back to your expression and then reveal the mate trying to keep up behind you. That’s the real 360 advantage: the camera operator can effectively arrive later. Native 8K/60fps gives fast-moving scenes plenty to work with when reframing, while the 10m waterproof rating means a sudden swim, paddle, or splash doesn’t have to end fi lming.WHO’S IT FOR?The adventurer who’d rather be in the action than constantly directing it. If you’ve ever fi nished a ride, hike, or surf thinking, ‘The best bit happened behind the camera’, 360 capture is a very handy way to stop missing it.

It’s less a one-view action cam and more a pocket-sized bag of camera angles – useful when a holiday can jump from water to trail to city streets. It combines three core shooting styles: 8K 360 video up to 50fps, 5K wide-angle capture, and a 4K Gimbal Mode. Its dual square sensors and processing system are paired with 10-bit colour, while FlowState Stabilisation and 360 Horizon Lock help keep energetic footage smooth and level. InstaFrame 2.0 can capture a ready-to-share fl at video while still preserving 360 footage for more ambitious reframing later – handy when you want something quick now and something clever for the edit later. The travel-friendly touches are equally useful. Replaceable Lens 2.0 outer lenses mean a scrape needn’t retire the whole camera, the 2.3-inch OLED display reaches a claimed 1200 nits for outdoor visibility, while waterproofi ng up to 20m means it can come swimming or snorkelling. The Essentials Bundle adds an extra battery and 114cm Invisible Selfi e Stick, so you’re set up for longer days and those signature fl oating-camera perspectives straight out of the box.ONE TRIP, LOTS OF LOOKSThis action camera is made for a packed itinerary: surfi ng in the morning, hiking after lunch, then exploring the city after dark. Shoot 360 when the surroundings are half the story, switch to wide-angle for a familiar action-camera view, or use Gimbal Mode when you want smoother directional footage. One compact camera can cover very different parts of the same trip without constantly changing your setup.MAKE THE VIEW PART OF THE STORYThe Invisible Selfi e Stick effect can create those ‘who’s fi lming that?’ fl oating perspectives, with the stick disappearing from compatible 360 footage. Walk a ridge, cycle a coastal path, or stand in the middle of a vast landscape and the shot can pull you into the scene rather than simply pointing away from you.FlowState Stabilisation and 360 Horizon Lock help tame movement and wonky horizons, while 20m waterproofi ng opens up more serious beach, swimming, and aquatic fun. And because 360 footage can be reframed afterwards, one good clip can potentially deliver a forward view, a selfi e angle, and a landscape reveal. That’s useful on holiday, when you rarely get a second take.WHO’S IT FOR?Those who like experimenting with how their trip looks, not just documenting that it happened. If your weekends regularly involve running, riding, skiing, golf, or freediving – and you want useful insights on your wrist without turning every outing into a data exercise - the Huawei Watch GT 7 Pro is the way to go. Long battery life also makes it a strong fi t for weekend warriors. Sharp Turn Alerts can warn when a tight bend is coming up fast – handy when the fun part begins on the descent. On the greenMove the virtual fl agstick to match its real position and get distances to the front, fl ag, and back of the green. Auto-rotating Green View changes with your perspective, while the 18-hole scorecard keeps the pencil-and-paper maths to a minimum. And with nothing sitting inside your ears, there’s less of that plugged-up feeling during long or sweaty sessions. There is a trade-off: open-ear listening doesn’t isolate you from outside noise like sealed earbuds or noise-cancelling headphones. But outdoors, that can be exactly the point.Who is it for?Runners, walkers, hikers, and active listeners who want to soundtrack their exercise without plugging their ears. The Shokz OpenRun Air 2 are the way to go if comfort and awareness matter more than shutting out distractions. They’re not headphones for disappearing into your own little bubble – they’re for adding a soundtrack to whatever’s happening outside it.Here’s the clever bit. Conventional headphones send sound waves through the air and into your ear canal. Bone conduction takes another route. The OpenRun Air 2 sit against the area in front of your ears and create tiny vibrations that travel through the bones of your skull to the inner ear. Your ears stay open while you still hear the audio.Shokz’s PremiumPitch 3.0 technology uses an upgraded bone-conduction driver to improve bass, vocals, and high-frequency detail. There are also four preset and two custom EQ modes in the Shokz App when you want to tweak the sound. THE OUTDOOR SOUNDTRACK The headphonesThe Shokz OpenRun Air 2 Open-Ear Headphones are made for getting moving without completely tuning out the world around you.Instead of sitting in or over your ears, they use bone conduction technology to deliver your playlists, podcasts, and calls. That makes them a natural fi t for a morning run, weekend walk, or hike, where situational awareness can be just as important as hearing what’s playing. They’re built to move, too. At just 26.4g, the OpenRun Air 2 are light enough to almost forget about, while a redesigned ear hook and wraparound frame help keep them securely in place when the pace picks up. They’re also more than 9% smaller than the original OpenRun.An IP67 rating takes care of sweat and rain – you can even rinse them off after a particularly enthusiastic session - although they’re not designed for swimming.Battery life reaches up to ten hours, and forgetting to charge them needn’t derail the morning run – fi ve minutes plugged in provides up to two hours of listening. Physical controls let you easily change tracks, take calls, and adjust volume without reaching for your phone, while Bluetooth Multipoint Pairing can keep two devices connected.GETTING OUT & ABOUTHEADPHONESWITH THE RIGHTjbhifi.com.au 32OCTOBER 2026TECHFEATURE visit jbhifi .com.au/stackMade to keep movingThe secure wraparound fi t helps minimise bouncing, while the open design lets your ears breathe. Breville’s latest Juice Fountain Fresh models put a new spin on whole-fruit juicing, making it quicker to go from fruit bowl to glass.Words Bec SummerEnjoy fast, fresh juicejbhifi.com.au 40OCTOBER 2026TECHFEATURE visit jbhifi .com.au/stack Breville the Juice Fountain Fresh Compact Breville the Juice Fountain Fresh 95 Which Breville Juice Fountain Fresh model is right for you? Choose the Fresh Compact if…bench space matters and you mostly juice for yourself or for two. Choose the Fresh 95 if… you juice frequently or for the family, want greater capacity, or want a quick serve straight into your glass. Either way… you get fast whole-fruit juicing, two speeds and dishwasher-safe parts – so it really comes down to compact convenience vs greater capacity.Tips for making better juice Mix sweet with fresh: Apple and carrot make an easy base; add ginger for zing or leafy greens for a more savoury hit. Think beyond breakfast: Watermelon, lime, and mint is made for a hot afternoon; orange, carrot, and ginger can kickstart the morning. Make tomorrow’s juice today: Fill and seal the 1.4L jug and refrigerate it for up to three days – handy when mornings get hectic. What’s new with Breville’s Juice Fountain Fresh series? Fresh Spin Technology brings a new micro-mesh cutting and juicing fi lter system. Two speeds let you switch between softer and harder produce; the existing Juice Fountain Compact has only one. Fresh Compact gets a bigger jug: 1.4L versus 800ml on the existing Compact. Fresh 95 adds more room to move: an 84mm chute, 3L pulp container, and direct-to-glass juicing. In short? Less prep, more fl exibility and plenty of fresh juice.without the fussSmall kitchen? The Juice Fountain Fresh Compact packs Breville’s fast whole-fruit juicing into a setup that won’t hog your benchtop. Its 75mm extra-wide feed chute takes whole fruit and veggies to cut down on chopping, while the onboard 1.5L pulp container keeps everything neatly contained.Breville’s new Fresh Spin Technology combines a micro-mesh cutting and juicing fi lter basket with a powerful motor to produce a glass of tasty juice in under 30 seconds. Two speeds let you go low for softer produce such as watermelon and high for harder, fi brous ingredients such as carrots. The 1.4L jug has a froth separator and can be sealed to refrigerate juice for up to three days. And when you’re done, dishwasher-safe components make for simple cleanup. The Fresh 95 ups the capacity with a larger 84mm feed chute and 3L pulp container, so you can power through more fruit and veg with less chopping and fewer stops to empty the pulp.Making a batch? Reach for the 1.4L jug with froth separator. Just want a quick OJ before you bolt out the door? The dedicated nozzle lets you juice straight into a glass, then simply inverts when you’re fi nished to help keep drips off the bench. The combination of bigger capacity and single-glass convenience makes the Fresh 95 a good fi t for busy and thirsty households – it can stay on the bench instead of disappearing into the cupboard. The Artisan Plus Tilt-Head Stand Mixer adds a bowl light, fi ner speed control, and smarter mixing touches to help you nail everything from delicate folds to serious dough.Words Bec SummerWhat’s new with the KitchenAid Artisan Plus?Ever peered into a mixing bowl wondering if that last streak of fl our has actually disappeared? The Artisan Plus is KitchenAid’s fi rst stand mixer with an integrated bowl light, illuminating the 4.7L bowl so you can keep a closer eye on ingredients, texture, and consistency as you mix. It switches on automatically when the head is lowered or the mixer is running, and you can turn it on manually too.Precision Speed Control gives you 11 preset speeds, or you can use the control knob to glide smoothly between settings when a recipe needs more accuracy. Can it handle everything from meringue to dough?Absolutely! KitchenAid’s original planetary mixing action sends the accessory one way while the shaft rotates the other, reaching at least 59 touchpoints around the bowl for a thorough mix. The 325W motor is built for jobs ranging from airy mixtures to thick doughs and heavy batters.Delicate recipes get some love as well. A dedicated half-fold speed gently incorporates light ingredients without knocking the life out of them – think blueberries or egg whites. The Soft Start function gradually builds speed to help keep fl our, sugar, and cocoa where they belong: in the bowl, not all over your benchtop.Does it mean less stopping and scraping? That’s the idea. The supplied Double Flex Edge Beater uses fl exible silicone edges to gently scrape the bowl as it mixes, reducing the need to keep stopping for a manual scrape-down. It’s not the fl ashiest upgrade on the spec sheet, but halfway through a cake batter it may become your favourite. The stainless-steel bowl, Double Flex Edge Beater, fl at beater, dough hook, and wire whisk are also dishwasher safe for easy post-bake cleanup. Can it do more than mix?It sure can. The attachment hub gives the Artisan Plus a life well beyond cakes and cookies. KitchenAid offers 10+ optional attachments and accessories, opening the door to rolling fresh pasta, grinding meat, slicing and shredding veggies, making ice cream, and shaving ice. They’re sold separately but give the mixer versatility beyond baking.Who is the KitchenAid Artisan Plus for? This stand mixer is for keen home cooks and bakers who’ll make the most of its precision control and versatility. The proven Artisan foundations are still here, but practical upgrades such as better visibility, fi ner control, and less manual scraping make the Plus easier to use. • Smoothie, protein shake, or icy pick-me-up? The Nutribullet Turbo Ultimate Pack brings more power, hands-free blending, and plenty of grab-and-go gear to your daily blend.Words Bec SummerWhat makes the Nutribullet Turbo stand out?Nobody wants to babysit a smoothie. The Nutribullet Turbo's 45-second auto cycle means you can twist the blade and cup onto the base, start blending, and let it do its thing while you get on with the morning rush. There’s some major muscle behind it, too. The 1200W peak-power motor works with Nutribullet’s Rapid Extractor Blade to break down tougher ingredients including ice, fruit and veggie skins, and nuts. So, when frozen berries, leafy greens, or a handful of almonds join the breakfast mix, the Turbo has the power to keep everything moving. That combination of power and an automatic cycle is really the Turbo story: load it up, twist it on, and come back 45 seconds later. Why choose the Ultimate Pack? The blender is just the start. The Ultimate Pack adds enough cups and lids to turn the Turbo into a handy little blending station for busy households. You get a 900ml blending cup, plus two 700ml handled tumbler cups, two matching silicone boots, and three matching to-go lids. That means you can make a bigger blend in the 900ml cup or prep individual drinks in the handled tumblers before heading out the door. The tumblers are especially useful away from the kitchen. They’re conveniently portable, the silicone boots provide an anti-slip base, and the matching lids turn your morning blend into a tasty take-away.What can you throw into the mix?Smoothies and protein shakes are the obvious options, but that 1200W peak-power motor gives you room to get more adventurous.Frozen fruit and ice can add some chill to a summer smoothie; nuts can give breakfast blends extra texture; and fruit and veggie skins don't necessarily need to be treated like a no-go zone. There's plenty of scope to experiment beyond banana-and-milk basics. Plus, with three cups in the pack, you don't have to make the same thing for everyone. Berry smoothie for one, protein shake for another – blender diplomacy sorted!Who is the Nutribullet Turbo Ultimate Pack for? This is one for regular blenders rather than occasional smoothie drinkers. The peak-power motor can easily break down tougher ingredients, while the fast automatic cycle suits anyone who'd rather get on with breakfast than stand over a blender. The Ultimate Pack earns its tag with the extras. Two handled tumblers, three to-go lids, and a larger 900ml cup make it the perfect choice for couples, families, gym-goers, or anyone whose morning blend regularly leaves the house with them. While a traditional air fryer relies on circulating heated air, InfraHeat combines hot airfl ow with infrared energy that transfers heat directly to the food’s surface. That means cooking can get underway faster, while the circulating air still works its magic on the outside.InfraHeat can provide up to four times faster heat-up and results up to 30% crispier, while retaining an ultra-juicy texture inside. In other words, that means less waiting, more crunch, and juicy results inside – exactly what you want from an air fryer.Tefal EY9488 Ever Fry InfraHeat Dual Drawer 11L Air FryerTefal EY927 Ever Fry InfraHeat Flex 9L Air Fryer Best for: Big family meals and cooking two different foods at once. One drawer for dinner, one for the chips? This air fryer’s dual drawer gives you two differently sized cooking zones – 6.5L and 4.5L – with 11L combined capacity, enough to feed up to ten people. The asymmetric setup is particularly handy when dinner isn't an even split. The larger drawer can handle the main course – including a whole chicken – while the smaller side handles chips or veggies. Each has independent cooking controls, and Sync Mode times both zones to fi nish together. No more perfectly cooked chicken waiting around for the chips to catch up. There are eight automatic programs, adjustable temperatures from 40°C to 200°C, and a dehydration mode that can run for up to eight hours. Removable parts are dishwasher safe, while the digital touch panel and automatic alerts help keep dinner moving without constant supervision. Best for: Flexible cooking that goes from two zones to one big one.A removable divider lets you make the switch in a click. Leave it in and the two independent heating elements give each side its own time and temperature controls, with a synchronised fi nish so both dishes hit the table together. Pull it out and the full-width JumboZone can accommodate oversized dishes including lasagne platters, heaped fries, or even two whole chooks side by side, with capacity to feed up to eight people.Seven cooking modes cover fries, chicken, veggies, fi sh, dessert, and proving, along with a manual mode for doing your own thing.A removable, washable viewing window also lets you check on dinner without opening the drawer and letting heat escape. Some nights it's chicken and chips; others it's a family-size lasagne. This versatile air fryer can handle both by transforming from two independent cooking zones into one 9L JumboZone. What is Tefal InfraHeat technology?Which Tefal Ever Fry model is right for you? Choose the Dual Drawer 11L if… you regularly cook for a crowd, want the larger overall capacity, or like having two differently sized drawers for a main and side. Its 11L capacity can cater for up to ten. Choose the Flex 9L if… versatility matters more. Keep its divider in for two independently controlled zones, then remove it when lasagne, two chickens, or another oversized meal needs the entire 9L JumboZone. Either way… InfraHeat is the headline act, with faster heat-up and extra crispiness giving both models a point of difference from standard air fryers.

Multi Air Flow distributes chilled air across the shelves, while Total Frost Free means the freezer won't add manual defrosting to your weekend jobs. A fl at black exterior with recessed handles keeps the look clean, and the 4-star energy rating gives this roomy quad door an everyday effi ciency tick. Its 666L capacity splits 426L fridge to 240L freezer, giving fresh produce the bigger share without skimping on frozen storage. The Active Fresh Zone maintains high humidity to help fruit and veg stay crisp, while Metal Fresh Tech helps spread cool air more evenly. SpaceMax technology uses high-effi ciency insulation to create thinner walls and more usable storage inside without bulking up the exterior. There’s also a FresherAir carbon fi lter, adjustable glass shelves for easier cleaning, and Twist Ice & Serve for drinks. Better still, its 5-star energy rating helps keep running costs in check. Best for: Smaller households wanting smart cooling and strong energy effi ciencyBottom mount fridgesWhy choose a bottom mount fridge? If you reach for milk, leftovers, and fresh food far more often than frozen peas, a bottom mount puts the stuff you use most around eye level. That means less bending and rummaging through the fridge, while the freezer sits below in pull-out drawers. Bottom mounts can also be a good fi t for families that want generous storage without the width of a French door or side-by-side model. The trade-off? • The Samsung Galaxy S26 FE does things a little differently. It swaps some top-end Galaxy S26 muscle for a larger display, bigger battery, and faster wired charging, while keeping the cameras, Galaxy AI, and everyday durability where they count.Words Scott HockingHow does the Samsung Galaxy S26 FE differ from the Galaxy S26?Think of the Galaxy S26 FE as the Galaxy S26 with its priorities rearranged. You get more screen and battery – 6.7 inches and 4,900mAh versus 6.3 inches and 4,300mAh - plus faster 45W wired charging. The standard Galaxy S26 counters with a newer processor, extra RAM, and higher-resolution telephoto camera. So, if more fl agship grunt matters, the Galaxy S26 wins. But if a larger display, bigger battery, and faster charging sound more useful, the Galaxy S26 FE is a more affordable alternative. Is bigger better when it comes to the display? If your phone doubles as your streaming, gaming, and scrolling companion, it sure can be. The 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display gives videos, photos, and games room to stretch out, while 120Hz refresh rate keeps swipes, scrolls, and motion looking silky smooth.Do the cameras handle more than point-and-shoot?There’s plenty to play with. The 50MP main camera handles the hero shots, a 12MP ultrawide pulls more into frame, and the 8MP telephoto gets you 3x closer to your subject. Shooting video on the move? Super Steady Video with Horizontal Lock helps keep things level when your hands – or subject - aren’t. Plus, My FanCam can automatically track a selected subject and keep them centred as they move – handy for capturing sport, kids, pets, or anything else that refuses to stand still. What about Galaxy AI features? The Galaxy S26 FE’s more context-aware Galaxy AI is onboard to save you time. Photo Assist can rework shots using natural language prompts, while Now Nudge surfaces timely suggestions based on what you’re doing. Now Brief can keep useful information and reminders together, while Circle to Search can identify multiple items in an image at once. It’s more about getting everyday stuff done with fewer taps and letting the phone take care of some digital housekeeping. Will it last through a long day?The 4,900mAh battery has more capacity than the standard Galaxy S26, while 45W wired charging can reach up to 69% in around 30 minutes with a compatible 45W adapter (sold separately). Wireless charging and Wireless PowerShare are supported too.Who is the Samsung Galaxy S26 FE for?Anyone who wants plenty of fl agship Galaxy S26 features without paying for performance they may never push. Regular streamers, social scrollers, and everyday multitaskers get the features they’ll notice most, while those chasing Samsung’s fastest chip and a stronger telephoto camera should perhaps opt for the Galaxy S26. • Budget ultraportable laptops are on the rise, and Dell has joined the fray with its impressive little XPS 13, running Windows 11 Home. We took the 8GB model for a spin, and here are our thoughts.Words Amy FlowerDesign and buildThe XPS 13 immediately looks premium, in keeping with the series’ roots. Its slim 12.7mm aluminium chassis punches above its weight, with none of the budget plastic you might expect at this price. At just 1kg, it well and truly ticks the ultraportable box, while still feeling sturdy enough to handle life on the move.DisplayThe 13.4-inch IPS touchscreen has slim bezels all around, so most of the machine’s compact footprint is taken up by screen.A 2560×1600 (2.5K) resolution, ~500-nit brightness, vivid colour, and dynamic refresh rate up to 120Hz make it one smooth little visual performer.Touch functionality is a welcome bonus for a budget-conscious laptop and works fl awlessly, although it’s worth keeping a cleaning cloth handy because the shiny screen retains fi ngerprints.PerformanceAt its heart is Intel’s Core 5 320 Wildcat Lake processor, designed for entry-level, low-powered systems and well suited to students and everyday users.Email, web browsing, Microsoft 365, and video playback are handled without raising a sweat. Our 8GB review unit can slow down with lots of browser tabs or several programs open at once. If heavier multitasking is a priority, the available 16GB model offers noticeably more breathing room.Integrated Intel Graphics handle everyday visuals, but AAA gaming and demanding creative work such as Photoshop or Premiere call for something more powerful. The 512GB SSD should be enough for most users, and we found the XPS 13 a nimble performer.Battery lifeYou want an ultraportable to have enough juice to see you through a busy day, and the XPS 13 really delivers. Dell claims up to 17 hours of life from a full charge, and it’s believable, bearing in mind that it also depends upon what you’re doing, how bright you have the screen, and other variables.ConnectivityWi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 keep wireless connectivity up to date. We were online in seconds, and pairing a Bluetooth mouse was equally speedy. The compact design does limit ports: you get just two USB-C connections. That should suffi ce on the move, but a hub will be useful at home for a monitor, card reader, and other accessories. There’s also no headphone socket, making Bluetooth headphones the obvious option.AudioThe built-in quad-driver speakers are surprisingly good for a budget ultraportable, delivering more punch than you might expect from such a compact machine, and working well for movies on the go.WebcamThe Full-HD webcam delivers smooth video for Zoom calls and supports Windows Hello, but there’s no physical privacy shutter. The bottom lineFor a Windows ultraportable, the XPS 13 is a very appealing option. It looks and feels premium, has an impressive screen, travels easily, and offers enough battery life to see most users through a busy day. I still have the record in storage (I move around too much to relocate my collection from place to place). Nickelback have had more than ten billion streams, sold more than 50 million albums, and consistently played to packed crowds around the world. When Ryan Reynolds inducted the band into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2023, he added, “Granted, there have been 100 million memes, too.”Accepting the honour, lead singer Chad Kroeger noted “27 years of blood, sweat and tears”. The band has now sailed past three decades. And they are releasing their first album in four years, Everything Under the Sun.The album finds the band in fine rockin’ form – check out the single Rattle the Cage, featuring Mötley Crüe guitarist John 5. “This album has every side of the band on it,” Chad Kroeger says.“There are songs that hit as hard as anything we’ve ever done, songs that take chances, and songs that remind us why we’ve been doing this together for so long.“Rattle the Cagefelt like the perfect way to kick the door open – it has the energy we’ve been feeding off every night on stage.” And it shows that Nickelback remain as defiant as ever, with Chad declaring: “With backs against the wall/ Has to be the one and one for all/ We face another day/ We raise the battle call/ Rattle the cage until it falls.” Jeff JenkinsNickelback Everything Under the Sunby Nickelback is out Oct 30 via VirginNickelback defy the critics to release their 11th album.Nickelback were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2023. And when they discovered that a band in America had the same name, they added the initials D.C. as a nod to their hometown – Dublin City. That was 12 years ago. Fontaines D.C. are now one of the most exciting rock bands in the world. When they visited Australia last year, reviewers hailed their “undeniably magnetic energy”, describing their performance as a “masterclass in tension and release”, with one critic stating: “We are witnessing the world’s next greatest band evolve before our eyes.”So, the band’s new album, Dopamine Chamber, definitely sits on the eagerly awaited list. And the first single, Marianne, just fuelled the hype, with NME giving it a five-star review.“The album itself is a dopamine chamber,” explains lead singer Grian Chatten. “You step inside and we test these different mind or mood-altering pieces of music on you.”Asked how it differed to its predecessor, Romance, Grian replied: “I felt it would be more powerful to leave the hope out and reflect the ugliness honestly. This one needed to feel more like a catastrophic warning.”Adds bass player Conor Deegan, “Our albums have always questioned a sense of place. My whole life I’ve existed in the orbit of incredible women. This is my love letter to them.” The music video for She’s the Best features another Aussie star – Nicole Kidman. Troye met the Oscar-winning actor when they both starred in the 2018 film Boy Erased.“Wow, that girl,” Troye sings. “She’s the best.”The 31-year-old artist says, “Walk down the street today with your headphones in and listen to this song and look around – the divine feminine is everywhere! An ambivalent ode to the nostalgic pull of commercial jingles, proprietary start-up sounds, and long-forgotten audio logos.”The band continues: “It’s been interesting as adults to reflect on this often-stunning period of marketing – the creativity, filmmaking, photography, and music, but which was also, you know, selling a completely unobtainable dream.“The way we value devices Jamie xx (Every Single Weekend), Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo (All the Time in the World), Panda Bear (Highfield ), and Mike Patton (Paradise Island and Total Recall ).And Can’t Get Over Losing You features America’s Tracy Amare, aka Portraits of Tracy, who says: “Working with The Avalanches was such an awesome experience.“I don’t find myself collaborating too often with peeps, but as soon as we connected it just felt right.” Jeff Jenkinsandproducts; the way we reflect and represent ‘a life lived’; the wonder of memory and deep power of nostalgia, especially in sound.“Revisiting imagery and jingles from childhood and realising how profoundly they have stuck... • jbhifi.com.au 4OCTOBER 2026visit jbhifi .com.au/stackWhat’s your earliest video gaming memory?Playing Godzilla: Save the Earth on PS2 with my older siblings and it being the only game I could beat them in.Nintendo Wii. I have lots of childhood memories with this system where my closest sibling and I played for hours and hours on end. We had quite the collection! You can only have one games console from any era – what would it be and why? What have you been playing most lately?Currently I’m playing Reanimal on PS5, and Marvel Rivals on PC – still! What’s your all-time favourite game or game series? It’s a toss-up between Godzilla: Save the Earth orSpectrobes: Origins.1 What was the fi rst game that you played? I grew up in the ‘80s and we had a ColecoVision when I was a little kid. I played Coleco games over and over like Antarctic Adventure, Mouse Trap, Smurf, and Space Panic. Some of the sound effects in those games still pop into my head decades later!2 What was the last game that you fi nished? I love starting new games, but I don’t always roll credits before jumping over to a new game. There are so many amazing games to play every year I want to get to them all! With that said, I’m working on finishing up Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, and I recently finished a cosy game called Go-Go Town. 3 What’s your favourite video game/series of all time? Outside of any series I’ve worked on, Zelda comes to mind as a consistently amazing series for decades. I remember the first time I walked outside the house at the beginning of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and being floored by the rain, music, and atmosphere. Just writing about it brings a smile to my face and makes me want to go back and re-play.4 What do you think is the most underrated video game of all time? Not underrated of all time, but I really enjoyed The Alters last year and was surprised I didn’t hear more people talking about it. For me it was a great mix of base-building/management alongside an interesting story and lots of player choice.5 What’s the game that you most wish you’d worked on? I’m amazed by the sheer scale and RPG depth of a game like Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, so it would be fun to see how that comes together behind the scenes. I’d also love to be a fly on the wall to understand the development process for some Nintendo first party titles, like Donkey Kong Bananza. They’re just best in class for making fun features work for many hours of gameplay. Can I also work on a Katamari game? • We’re heading to the Korean Peninsula this year in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. To learn more about the game, we had a chat with developer Infi nity Ward’s Jeff Negus (narrative director) and Jack Hoppus (technical multiplayer designer). Words Amy FlowerSo, why the Korean Peninsula for campaign mode? “The impact that Korean culture and media have had on the world has been massive and, as we've done for the past few games, we felt strongly about bringing a fresh cultural perspective to Modern Warfare 4,” says Negus. “When considering narrative implications and the region’s divided history and tensions, we felt there was a unique story to tell and a fresh perspective through which to experience it.”The Modern Warfare games have always balanced realism with entertainment. As Negus explains, this allows the developers to challenge players, as well as entertain.“Modern Warfare has always ripped from the headlines – grounded fi ction that you could imagine takes place in the real world. To me, the compelling part of the realism in the entertainment is how the characters respond to the confl ict they're met with. We're always looking for ways to bring the large-scale action into a palpable experience through the eyes of the people experiencing it. “We're particularly interested in pushing boundaries that would ask challenging questions of the player thematically – what would you do if you were in this situation? I feel like the more realistic the drama, and the more the characters show who they are through confl ict, the more entertaining it is.”This year’s model sees improvements in two key components of the experience: movement and gunplay. “We’ve put a huge amount of effort and focus into making our movement and gunplay both intuitive and satisfying,” Hoppus tells us. “We like to say that the gun is the foundation of the game, so it’s deserving that each shot you fi re feels powerful and reactive, but also incredibly satisfying and responsive. “For movement, our goal was to design systems that were simple to grasp but have enough depth that players can really master them. Mechanics like the supine slide aren’t diffi cult to input, but real knowledge is when to use it for pure traversal, versus supine slide peeking to throw your opponents off.” With multiplayer promising new modes, maps, weapons, and more, we were curious as to how new players are catered for while keeping old hands satisfi ed. “Whenever we design something, we view it through the lens of ‘If I’ve been playing Call of Duty every year, what’s new and exciting for me, but also for the newer player, if this is my fi rst time playing this mode or map, can I understand what’s happening?’ Hoppus reveals. “This carries through our entire multiplayer – if I’m a dedicated Call of Duty fan that’s played every title, is this exciting and new for me? If I’m a new fan, how do I learn and master these systems?” This ethos led to a new addition to the Call of Duty arsenal.“To test our movement, we built a mobility course to stress-test our new mechanics internally, and it was so popular developers were staying up late getting competitive, sharing their times. We ended up having so much fun with it that we introduced it to the public in the beta and will be launching with the mobility course.”This year it’s all next-gen hardware – including a debut on Switch 2. This has helped to bring a more advanced experience to players.“We’re excited to develop on next-gen hardware, to ensure that Modern Warfare 4 both runs and looks great,” enthuses Hoppus “It’s allowed us to really lean on features like dynamic weather and volumetric smoke to enhance gameplay and better connect the players to the world they’re playing in.”When pushed to name any one mission or moment that especially excites them, Negus couldn’t decide, however Hoppus was keen to chime in.“We’ve been having an insane amount of fun on Kill Block, and I’m stoked to have players get their hands on it. It really shines in Gunfi ght, but from the start we’ve been making sure our other modes work great on it as well. Search and Destroy on Kill Block is something special.” jbhifi.com.au 6OCTOBER 2026GAMINGFEATUREvisit jbhifi .com.au/stackTHIS IS THE MODERN WAYIF YOU LIKE THIS, YOU’LL LOVE THESE:Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, Hell Let Loose: Vietnam, Battlefi eld 6• Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4is out Oct 23FORMAT: GENRE: Shooter MULTIPLAYER: YesWhen asked for top tips for multiplayer, Jack Hoppus suggested…“Play to your strengths. • When Wii Sports released in 2006, it didn’t just introduce the new Nintendo Wii console, it also brought us a new way of playing – and quickly became a cultural phenomenon. Now, 20 years later, it’s the era of the Switch 2, and time for Nintendo Switch Sports Resort. Words Amy FlowerThe Wii Sports legacyThe Wii let millions of players worldwide discover that video games could be physical, social, and – with its innovative motion controls - intuitive. It transcended the typical gamer audience to infi ltrate all walks of life, ranging from families bowling in living rooms to grandparents swinging virtual tennis rackets.Nintendo then expanded upon the magic that they’d created by releasing Wii Sports Resort in 2009. Powered by the Wii MotionPlus accessory, it offered far more accurate controls over the standard WiiMote. The game’s setting, Wuhu Island, added a getting away from it all angle, whether it was enjoying swordplay on the beach, or archery overlooking the sea.Switching it upIn 2022, the Switch era brought us Nintendo Switch Sports, updating the established formula with online play and the option of creating customisable Sportsmate characters, although you could still use classic Mii avatars. But some of us missed Wuhu Island, and its breezy holiday feel. Now, with Nintendo Switch Sports Resortlaunching exclusively for the Switch 2, Nintendo is taking us back to Wuhu Island – and they’re expanding the experience, too.More controlThe Switch 2’s upgraded Joy-Con 2 controllers have allowed Nintendo’s boffi ns to introduce more accurate motion input than ever, whether it’s swinging a racket, pulling back a bowstring, piloting a plane, or steering a jet ski. Woohoo, it’s Wuhu! This new entry reintroduces Wuhu Island as a fully realised sports resort, complete with scenic routes and an assortment of activities that bring the island alive. Once again players can create a Sportsmate or Mii and explore the resort between events, giving the game that getaway feeling that many fans had missed. Plus, playing any sport in any mode accrues Spocco Points, which can be swapped out for ways to further personalise your Mii or Sportsmate. We’ll now be able to freely explore the island outside of events, with new activities including chasing dolphins in the ocean, as well as collectible hunts such as fi nding hibiscus fl owers and snapping Spocco Photos. A new offl ine mode named Island Crown is also debuting, allowing players to rise through the ranks of each sport and challenge island champions – and even island legends!Take a breakWith Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, Nintendo has created more than just another sports compilation. The return to Wuhu Island, coupled with activities to explore beyond the core sports offerings, bring back the sense of escapism that helped to make the original Wii games so iconic.Add the abilities of the Switch 2, which offers more precise controls than ever before, and whether you’re a longtime fan or a new player, you’re in for a treat. • After a wait of some seven years, Gears of War returns this month, taking us back to where it all began. Matt Searcy, creative director on the game at The Coalition, tells us more about Gears of War: E-Day. Words Bec SummerWhy did you make the choice to create a prequel to Gears of War?We realised that a lot of the words we use to describe the franchise were what our fans also use, phrases like brotherhood, brutality, pathos, awe. Why E-Day? That’s the moment it all comes together. It’s the heart of the Gears universe. Everything that happens is shaped by this day. Why did you set E-Day in Kalona? The reason was to make this very intimate battle inside the larger event. It’s such a huge event on Sera. Two thirds of the population are wiped out. It’d be easy to look at this and be like, well, we know what happens. We know most of the population dies. We know all this stuff. But by placing it in a single city and following these people, we do get to play with what it means to try to pull out some sort of victory on the fi rst two days, to have some sort of hope. Obviously, there’s so much loss in this game. But to do it in a way that touches on themes about loss and brotherhood and loyalty was really important to us.While much that is encountered in-game we’ve seen before, being a prequel it’s all new for our heroes...Yeah, I think for us, without getting into spoilers too much, I think it’s kind of obvious the cool thing we get to do with E-Day is every time an enemy shows up, it’s the fi rst time Marcus and Dom have seen them. So, we get to go from seeing the fi rst Wretch in the game to the fi rst Drone, and up and up and up, until you’re seeing Brumaks with armour. Can you tell us more about E-Day’s big bad, Vraahk? He basically embodies the brutality of the Locust. Even when you’re not facing him, when you’re facing his elite troops, you’ve got all the vibes of Vraahk coming through in the brutality that you face. What surprises have you packed in for more intrepid players? The game is a linear game overall, and it weaves back and forth between sections like the bridge, and places where we give you access to a few city blocks at a time. You’re still on a mission, but as you go to your mission, it’s up to you how you get there. When you look around the corners, you can come across another squad trying to fend off the Locusts, maybe a family that’s trapped in a building, and each of those gives you a little narrative reward. If you decide to help them, it’s up to you. We also expand our gameplay sandbox, so for the fi rst time in a campaign game, you can mod your weapons. Some of the things people have seen in Horde, they come into the campaign as well, and so it really pays to explore. There’s a ton of narrative storytelling. There’s a ton of environmental storytelling. We have these side objectives you can do if you choose. We have hard cases you can fi nd that give you additional gameplay progression and stuff. What excites you most about launching Gears of War: E-Day?We’re telling the origin story of Marcus and Dom and their bond... this is the bond that defi nes the franchise. They’re not the characters we know from Gears 1 to 3. They don’t have ten years of fi ghting the Locust between them. When the game opens, there’s supposed to be peace on Sera, and they’re trying to fi gure out life without this person they both loved. People are going to see the formation of this brotherhood that is so iconic to Gears. jbhifi.com.au 10OCTOBER 2026GAMINGFEATUREvisit jbhifi .com.au/stackE-DAY TO REMEMBER!IF YOU LIKE THIS, YOU’LL LOVE THESE:Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, Remnant II, Halo: Campaign Evolved• Gears of War: E-Dayis out Oct 7FORMAT: GENRE: Shooter MULTIPLAYER: YesActor John DiMaggio has voiced Marcus Fenix since 2006’s original Gears of War. • Back in 2019, our heads were turned by thrilling sci-fi -drenched action-adventure Control. Seven years later, a sequel is with us, and it changes up the formula in several ways. Remedy Entertainment’s Mikael Kasurinen, creative director on Control Resonant, tells us more. Words Amy FlowerThe fi rst thing that returning players will notice is the change of protagonist. This time the original game’s Jesse is out, and her brother Dylan – whom we also encountered originally - steps up to star. This has helped to bring a different overall feel to proceedings.“The fi rst game is inside the Oldest House, in isolation, and it's about Jesse, who's comes from the outside world into that space. She's new to that reality – she hasn't seen any of this stuff before. So, she learns a lot about these paranatural forces and the nature of the FBC and all of that. But she's kind of trapped inside,” explains Kasurinen.“Dylan, he's been inside the Oldest House for 20 years, his whole adult life. That's normal to him. So, it feels poetic and right that now his journey is from within that place we saw in the fi rst game to the other direction. It's a reverse journey – going from that isolation and captivity, that strange place that's normal to him, to the outside world, and that outside world is weird and strange to him, yet familiar to us. There's something really exciting about that.”Don’t think for a minute that the paranatural events that made Control such an experience are gone though, in fact Kasurinen tells us that Remedy have upped the ante.“One part of the experience that I'm very excited about is the sense of motion that you have through the world. We put a lot of energy into it, like Shift, the way that you can tap into these gravity anomalies within the world. And the whole world can rotate, basically. We're really tapping into that, like fi nding these mind-bending journeys through the world where it's being paranaturally shaped around as you navigate through it.”A deft balancing act has been achieved between continuing the original story and allowing new players to enter the world of Control Resonant and not feel out of place.“We call it a sequel, and it is a sequel, but it's also an independent product that stands on its own feet,” confi rms Kasurinen. “To me, these games go together like two siblings, each belong to the same family, but they have their own identity and desires and own fate, and they're connected.“Returning players will get to see a lot of familiar faces, familiar phenomena. The Hiss and Mold are there, but of course we're introducing a lot of new things as well. There's a fun layering of familiar things, but also defi nitely facing new challenges.”The most signifi cant change in gameplay – and one that posed some challenges for Remedy - sees a shift from action-adventure to action RPG. “One of the challenges when you take steps towards an RPG direction has been the permutations of options that accumulate after we start to lay them in front of the player,” muses Kasurinen. “What was important to us was that we do it in our own way. And we're known for storytelling, creating these deep narratives, an interesting, complicated world, and so on. So, it felt like we had all the right ingredients to be able to step into this more RPG oriented direction. And it's been wonderful, we're really excited about it.”Ultimately, Kasurinen hopes that fans of Remedy games gain just as much from Control Resonant as from their previous games.“As a studio, we have existed for 30 years. So, there's a really loyal fanbase. That means a lot to us, and as we created Control Resonant, it had a special meaning to us.“What we wanted to do was make sure that the fans get to experience the things that they've experienced with all the Remedy games in the past, yet at the same time, we wanted to do something new and unexpected, something that we're also invested and excited about to expand the universe.” jbhifi.com.au 12OCTOBER 2026GAMINGFEATUREvisit jbhifi .com.au/stackTOTAL CONTROL!IF YOU LIKE THIS, YOU’LL LOVE THESE:Alan Wake, Returnal, Dead Space• Control Resonantis out Oct 15FORMAT: GENRE: Action RPG MULTIPLAYER: NoThe Alan Wake games, Control, and Control Resonant are all part of the larger Remedy Connected Universe.DYK?

  • If you’re an F1 fan looking for a top-notch sim racing rig, then have Logitech G got the kit for you! Their renowned RS50 series has been given a McLaren makeover, with a new bundle packing in everything that you need to hit the virtual track in Formula 1 style. Words Amy FlowerOne with the lot!The Logitech G RS50 McLaren Racing Bundle really is a one stop shop for starting – or updating - your sim racing journey. The collection packs in an RS50 direct drive base, an RS50 wheel hub, an RS50 Formula steering wheel, and an RS50 pedal set. Racing supportThe bundle is ready to race on PlayStation PS5/PS4 and PC out of the box. If your console of choice is the Xbox Series X|S, you can buy a separate wheel hub and just slot that into the package in place of the PlayStation one. As well as compatibility, the most noticeable difference is the button markings, which echo the consoles that they support.SpecsOn the technical side of things, the RS System harnesses cutting edge tech that combines Logitech’s advanced TRUEFORCE feedback with direct drive technology, rather than gear or belt drive, to deliver a more precise simulation of real racing.Speaking even more technically, the RS System brings 8Nm of force feedback into play, which means a more realistic delivery of in-game physics such as road conditions, and motor vibrations. The hub also features a quick release mechanism for easy swapping to other wheel styles, which are available separately. The wheel thingThe included Formula wheel echoes the look of the real thing, and it feels great in-hand, as well as in the heat of the race. It's made from silicone leather, although you'd be hard-pressed to tell that it’s actually synthetic.CustomisationThe two solid gear shift fl appy paddles are reprogrammable, so you can leave them as-is, or tweak to pull off such race-winning moves as a handbrake/accelerator grid launch, all via Logitech’s easy-to-use G HUB app. There’s further customisation available, too. Different racing games often have different settings, so you can store fi ve different racing profi les within your RS50 System via the inbuilt OLED screen on the wheel base.Floor it!The top technology continues in the RS pedals, with the accelerator featuring contact-free Hall effect tech, while the 75kg load cell brake ups the realism further. They also bring customisation even further to the fore, with each of the two included pedals being modular. This allows budding racers to space them horizontally however best suits their driving style, or to allow for different widths of footwear. You can even adjust pedal feel via included dampers and spacers. Firmer, or softer? It’s your call. While a clutch pedal isn’t included, those who still think that manual gearboxes rule (respect!) can purchase the RS Clutch Pedal separately, and it’s designed to easily bolt on to the RS Pedals base.Get set…An included clamping system allows you to quickly and easily attach the RS System to a solid desk or table – it literally takes seconds, and removal is just as easy. Just pop the unit upon the surface where you want it, attach the clamp, and tighten the screw mechanism.Of course, if you’re investing in a system such as this you may already have a dedicated racing rig. Unsurprisingly, the RS System is equally happy here, with all the right bolt holes on the base to attach to any good quality frame.Go!For any driver, in real life or simulated, setting things up so that they’re just how you like them is key, and with their raft of customisations both physical and in software, Logitech G bring the options with their RS50 McLaren Racing Bundle. If you’ve never experienced sim racing with a wheel and pedals, then you’re in for the ride of your life. Or, if you’re an old hand, you’ll likely be surprised at what a step up in realism the RS50 delivers. jbhifi.com.au 16OCTOBER 2026GAMINGFEATUREvisit jbhifi .com.au/stackPAPAYA RULES!As hardcore F1 fans will already know, the shade of orange that the McLaren team has embraced is known as “papaya”. These switches let players set exactly how far a key must be pressed before it activates – anywhere from a feather-light 0.1mm to a deeper 4mm - for tailoring to individual playstyles.Another major feature is Rapid Trigger on every key. This lets each key reset instantly after being pressed, enabling rapid repeated inputs that are perfect for speedy FPS movement and precision aiming. The PRO X2 RAPID also runs at an ultra-fast 8kHz polling and scan rate, which is eight times faster than standard keyboards, so inputs are captured with minimal delay.Whether black, white, or magenta, the PRO X2 RAPID delivers a premium typing feel, thanks to six layers of sound-dampening materials and high-quality PBT keycaps, while a cool onboard OLED display lets players adjust settings on the fl y without software. Add the included silicone palm rest, and this keyboard is one serious competitor.LOGITECH G PRO X3 SUPERSTRIKE MOUSELOGITECH G PRO X2 RAPID KEYBOARDLOGITECH G PRO X3 LIGHTSPEED HEADSETThe Logitech G PRO X3 SUPERSTRIKE Mouse, PRO X2 RAPID Keyboard, and PRO X3 LIGHTSPEED Headset are out October 13DYK?Made for players who rely on absolute clarity, this wireless headset delivers both high-fi delity game audio and studio-grade voice capture – win-win! • Who’s it for and what’s new?Aimed again at streamers, podcasters, and gamers, the all-new Yeti 2 combines studio-grade recording with smart, on-device processing. It pairs a redesigned three-capsule array with real-time AI processing and adds a very cool high-resolution colour display, so users can both hear and see what’s happening with their voice as they record. The specsThe Yeti 2 records at 24-bit/48 kHz and covers a full audible range with a 20Hz–20kHz frequency response. The redesigned three-capsule array is tuned to deliver natural high-fi delity sound, while a quoted max SPL (Sound Pressure Level) of 129dB and a signal-to-noise ratio above 77dB mean that it has the headroom and clarity needed to handle loud sources, as well as close-mic work. Physically, the Yeti 2 sits at roughly 289mm tall, is 110 mm wide, and weighs in at 995g, all combining to make it a pleasingly imposing desktop presence. There’s also a choice of black or white, so you can match your setup just right.A smart micWhere Yeti 2 offers more than many microphones is in its automation and on-mic intelligence. A voice proximity sensor tracks who’s speaking in three dimensions within a two-metre radius – so it detects where you are, then onboard processing auto-adjusts gain, EQ, and pickup patterns to keep your levels consistent, no matter how hyper you get – it polls an incredible 48,000 times per second!Meanwhile, built-in AI-powered denoiser options let users reduce unwanted room noise without having to send audio through a separate plugin, while Blue VO!CE DSP is built-in, so sweetening and vocal effects can be applied directly from the Yeti 2 itself.InterfacingThe Yeti 2 user interface is designed to show what you want when you want it, with a 1.3-inch colour LED display providing visual feedback for gain, presets, and tracking status, while fi ve onboard presets give quick access to common setups such as gaming, streaming, and podcasting. Getting around couldn’t be simpler, with a large dial just under the screen that rotates as well as clicking to select various functionalities. For deeper customisation, Logitech’s G HUB software unlocks additional audio settings, as well as custom display graphics and user-defi ned presets. The Yeti 2 is plug-and-play over USB, supports both Windows and macOS, and features a 3.5mm jack for monitoring. What’s in the box?Open the Yeti 2 box and, as well as the mic itself, you’ll fi nd a desk stand, a two-metre USB cable, and, in a neat touch, rubber stoppers to pop in the holes left should you use a boom mount rather than the desk stand.Summing upIf you’re a creator who wants a single, self-contained microphone that automates much of the technical stuff while still offering the option of fi ne tuning, the Yeti 2 is an attractive option. While it keeps the classic sci-fi rocket-like Yeti look, it adds genuinely useful features such as tracking, AI denoising, and on-mic DSP, which all combine to make broadcast quality sound a doddle to achieve. jbhifi.com.au 20OCTOBER 2026GAMINGFEATUREvisit jbhifi .com.au/stackThe Logitech G Blue Yeti 2 USB Microphone is out October 13The Blue Yeti desktop microphone is a legend in content creation circles for its ease of use and versatility. Now it’s time for Logitech G’s Blue Yeti 2, an evolution that improves upon the original in a multitude of ways.Words Amy FlowerREADY, YETI, GO!YOUR OWN PERSONAL YETI!As well as displaying settings information in graphic form such as EQ type, mic pattern, and gain control, depending upon the mode the Yeti 2’s inbuilt screen also shows a cute and expressive animated Yeti character. • Not everybody has space for a full-sized keyboard, and some gamers subscribe to a “the smaller the better” policy. The Corsair Clipper Pro Mini 60 takes up just 60% of the space of a full-sized keyboard, while packing in advanced tech that’s usually reserved for high-end gaming gear. Words Amy Flowerjbhifi.com.au 22OCTOBER 2026GAMINGFEATUREvisit jbhifi .com.au/stackTHIS CLIPPER IS ALITTLE RIPPER!The Corsair Clipper Pro Mini 60 Hall Effect Gaming Keyboard is available now.Its gaming credentials don’t mean that it isn’t perfectly suited to everyday users, though. Whether you’re gaming, working, or simply want a neater setup, the Clipper Pro Mini 60 offers a mix of durability and responsiveness. Coupled with clever features, it’s very easy to live with every day, whether you opt for one in black, or white.Make the switch! The headline feature of the Clipper Pro Mini 60 is its Hall effect MGX Hyperdrive Core magnetic switches, which use magnets instead of traditional mechanical contacts. This means that every key press is detected with excellent accuracy and consistency, and the switches won’t wear out in the same way that mechanical ones do. Rated for up to 100 million keystrokes, this makes this keyboard a smart long-term investment. And the keys still make a satisfying “clack” sound, too!Basically, think of Hall effect keys as being like automatic doors that open the moment a sensor detects you, while traditional mechanical switches are like push-to-open doors that rely on a physical latch that wears down over time. These clever switches also allow for adjustable actuation, meaning that you can choose how far a key needs to be pressed before it activates. Do you want ultra-fast response for gaming? Then set a hair-trigger actuation of 0.2mm. Prefer a deeper press for typing? Increase it to 3.8mm. The Clipper Pro Mini 60 also supports Rapid Trigger, which is a feature that resets a key the moment that you start to lift your fi nger. This allows near-instant repeated inputs, which is perfect for fast-paced games. Combined with 8,000Hz hyper-polling, which sends your key presses to your computer up to eight times faster than standard keyboards, the Clipper Pro Mini 60 is built for – and delivers - speed. Useful featuresDespite its diminutive size, the Clipper Pro Mini 60 is pleasingly versatile. A key feature is Smart Tap, which lets you assign different actions to a quick tap of a key versus a long press, which is ideal for adding shortcuts without clutter. Multi-Action allows up to a surprising four commands on a single key, while Tap Lock turns long-hold actions such as in-game sprinting into simple toggles. Backlighting is a must on a keyboard, and the Clipper Pro 60 Mini delivers customisable per-key RGB lighting, fully defi nable – and able to be stored on the unit - using the handy Corsair Web Hub.The Clipper Pro Mini 60 is also IP57 water and dust resistant, which means that accidental spills or dusty environments won’t trash your keyboard. Add its durable build, double-shot keycaps, and a detachable braided USB-C cable, and it’s as ready for performing at home as it is for travelling. The bottom lineThe Corsair Clipper Pro Mini 60 is a compact keyboard that doesn’t skimp on performance. Its magnetic switches, smart customisation features, and rugged build make it the perfect choice for gamers, but its comfort, speed, and space saving design also make it a great everyday keyboard for anyone who’s after a modern, minimalist setup. So, how do I get around using a keyboard with no arrow keys?Naturally a 60% keyboard needs to leave out some keys for space saving, including the familiar left, right, up, and down arrows keys. With the Clipper Pro Mini 60, there are three ways to recreate their functionality. Use Smart Tap to assign arrow keys to taps or holds on existing keys. Create custom arrow shortcuts using the Corsair Web Hub software. Simply hold down the FN key and use the keys at bottom right.
