For us, it dials deep into nostalgia, bac k to the days of buying magazines solely for the poster advertised on the front. Raiding Blu T ac k from existing posters or risking the ire of your mum by using thumb tacks to stick up your latest art work was a rite of passage. W ell, this month we get to do it all again with the excellent – and free – pull-out Wolv erine poster marking the September 1 5 release of Mar vel’ s Wolv erine on PlayStation 5. It’ s been 1 7 years since a scrappy , movie tie-in solo Wolv erine game released, but now he’ s bac k with arguably the best st udio for the task at the helm. Prior to Mar vel’ s Wolv erine (and, of course, Ratc het and Clank), Insomniac Games delivered three incredible Spider -Man titles that turned web slinging into one of gaming’ s most joyful mec hanics. Insomniac’ s W olverine trades Spider -Man ’ s sunny heroics for something darker and more brutal, dropping players into Logan ’ s fractured, rage-filled world before the X-Men even existed. And if the studio ’ s trac k record holds, it’ll be just as hard to put down. So dig out the Blu T ac k, brace for your mum’ s wrath, and get that poster up on the wall – some rites of passage nev er get old. For 36 y ears no w , the Fire Emblem series of epic f antasy tactical RPGs has captiv at ed play ers, serving their desir e for enthr alling strat egic gaming. With Fir e Emblem: For tune ’ s W eav e ar r iving this month, w e tak e a quick look bac k at the muc h-lov ed franc hise. Words Amy Flower Where it began… W ay bac k in 1 990, the fi rst Fire Emblem game,Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light , was released in J apan for Nintendo’ s Family Computer , or Famicom console (whic h we kne w as the Nintendo Entert ainment Sy stem). The game w as a labour of love f or a group of four lik eminded developers, headed up b y Shouzou Kaga, who came together in 1 987 ov er their desire to create their own world, af ter having f allen heavily for Square ’ s Final F ant asy series. While that fi rst game didn ’t f are so well with revie wers, it did act as a kic king of f point for what is now one of Nintendo ’ s most enduring franc hises, and it also established several tactical RPG tropes that have become staples within the genre, including the of t infuriating “permadeath” . Y ou’re gone! If you ha ven ’t encountered the term “permadeath” , or indeed the game mec hanic, it’ s fairly self-e xplanator y in that once you’ re dead, you’ re gone from the game – permanent death. The concept remained a staple of the Fire Emblem series right up until 20 1 0’ s twelf th entr y , Fire Emblem: Ne w Myster y of the Emblem on the Nintendo DS. F rom then on, a compromise was reac hed whereb y players could c hoose between a “Classic” mode, whic h continued the permadeath tradition, or ‘Casual’ mode, where their fallen c haracter w ould be resurrected and ready to fi ght again in the next bat tle. Go west! F or more than a decade, the Fire Emblem seriesremained ex clusive to its native J apan. In 20 0 1, how ever , its popular characters Marth and R oy were included as fi ghters in the GameCube release Super Smash Bros. Melee , and they soon pro ved to be a hit worldwide. This led to Nintendo deciding t o release Fire Emblem outsid e of Japan, with theserie s’ seventh title, Fire Em blem:The Blazing Bl ade, reac hing W estern Game Boy A dvance handhelds u nder the guise ofsi mplyFire Emblem .Pro ving extremely pop ular, all subsequent t itles – except for one, t he F am icom remake Fire Emblem: N ew Myster y of the Emblem on DS - hav e received worldwide releases. So much Fire Emblem ! Since that fi rst outing bac k in 1 990, there have been 1 7 mainline Fire Emblem games – threeof whic h were remak es – as well as fi ve spin-of f titles that hav e released on Nintendo hardware. Of the lat ter , one of the most intriguing was for the W ii U, a collision of Fire Emblem and Shin Megami T ensei in Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE . It later arrived on S witc h as T ok yo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore , to many ra ve revie ws. In 20 1 7 w e also had all the fun of the fi rst of two crossov ers with the Dynast y W arriors series, Fire Emblem W arriors . W eav e of F ortune! Everything that fans lov e about the Fire Emblem series returns in the hot ne w advent ure Fire Emblem: F ortune ’ s W eav e for Nintendo Switc h 2. Prepare to be hurled into the dazzling c haos of the Heroic Games, where victor y means one wish and def eat means fading into legend. The Dagdan Empire has thrived under divine r ule for centuries, and no w warriors from e ver y corner gather in the city of Dagsion to chase glory . Play ers guide one of four contenders – Cai, Dietric h, Theodora, or Leda - as the y bat tle rivals, forge alliances, and c hase dreams, vengeance, or redemption. Between clashes, there ’ s training, recruiting, and exploring bey ond the cit y walls, amassing the strength required to sur vive the brutal trials of the Games, and to shape a destin y that’ s worth y of the gods. jbhifi.com.au 8 SEPTEMBER 2026 GAMING FEA TURE visit jbhi fi .com.au/stack IF YOU L IKE THIS, YOU’LL LOVE THESE : Persona 5 T actics, Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope, Unicorn Overlord • Fire Emblem: Fortune’ s Weave is out Sep 17 The “Fire Emblem” of the title refers to a super - powerful element that’ s usually represented by either a royal weapon, crest, or shield, symbolising the strength of war and dragons. Y ou might think that with it known that your sparkling ne w studio f eatures people who work ed on The Witc her , suc h as Konrad T omaszkiewicz, the Rebel Wolv es team might f eel extra pressure. Surprisingly , they don ’ t. “W e t alked about this and w e’ll not av oid comparisons, especially when that's who ourCEO is, ” says Kuc harski. “K onrad was one of the main people behind The W itc her , so we welcome the comparison because T he Witcher III was marvellous, and one of the golden stars for pla ying games. But also, we’re making our own thing, and we really f eel confi dent aboutthe IP and our original ideas. ” With an aim to make a series of games that mov e through time, a classic vampire stor y unfolded. “The people behind it w ere Konrad, again, and Jakub Szamalek, who is our narrativ e director , ” reveals K uc harski. “They were t alking about many things, and one of them w as how to make a game that w ould be a saga in whic h you’ d play the same c haracter , whic h would also mov e from periods of times going for ward. So, of course, vampirism w as the easiest answer . “The y also t alked about w erewolv es and the dual nature of them, so being a human by da y and by night. In the end, they came upwith the Dawn walker , a creature that w ould be a mix of both. ” It isn ’t necessarily a predictable vampire tale, as the team have taken aspects from many cult ures, as well as adding their own twists. A new IP fr om a studio with ser ious The Witc her pedigree? That’ s this month ’ s The Blood of Da wnw alk er , an intr iguing v ampir e-soak ed tale. W e sat do wn for a c hat with Piotr Kuc harski, wr iter at P olish dev eloper Rebel W olves, to fi nd out mor e about this exciting new action RPG. Words Amy Flower “W e drew inspiration from quite a lot of folklore, legend, and so on, especially from the area we liv e in – we are, as yo u know , from Poland, ” say s Kuc h arski with a smile. “In Slavic mythology , instead of folklore, v ampires are a thing . The y’re also I think in Germanic folklore, and in R omanian folklore, so w e drew from those. “W e added our own twists to make it an original idea, but also one in whic h people who lov e vampires will f eel at home. But there will also be something for them to e xplore and fi nd out some new things about v ampires. ” In an interesting turn, T he Blood of Dawn walker giv es players an in-game 30-da y and 30-night window in whic h to pla y through, so to get all aspects of the stor y you’ d need to playthrough more than once. Kuc harski e xplains... “T o get a full stor y , y ou have to play once, because this is the stor y of Coen tr ying to fi nd his wa y in this new reality and also trying to sav e his family . So basically, if you playonce, you will learn the story . Y ou will get the full advent ure. But the dif ferent pla ythroughs and the lev el of engagement you c hoose for yourself will giv e you more layers of the stor y . “So, for e xample, you will probably be able to fi nd out more about F rancis, the antagonist, or the other vampires that join him, because we ha ve prepared for all those lore maniacs that want to lic k the w alls and fi nd everything possible. Y ou won't fi nd all the answers in this one, but if you learn some things, y ou’ll get some rew ard in the next instalments of the game. “I think it's a neat thing that both play ers and Coen, they are the babes in the w ood, so to speak, lost and fi nding their wa y , and it's only up to the play er and the c hoices they make how muc h the y will fi nd out about what's really happening. ” Hopes are high amongst the Rebel Wolv es team that the game will fi nd an eager audie nce.“ Firstly, I hope th ey’ll create theiro wn stories and that t hey’ll create theiro wn Coens, so to s peak. But also, Ij u st really hopeas a writer, espe cially, that when th eyfi nish the game, they’ll remember some emotional beats, ” Kuc harski tell us. “Y ou know , the y’ll feel lik e, ‘This is something that is staying with me’ – some quotes, some scenes, and so on, because to us, creating a narrative-driv en game is all about ev oking emotions in play ers. So, if atthe end of the day the y played The Blood of Da wnwalk er and they cried a bit, I w ould be very happy . ” jbhifi.com.au 1 0 SEPTEMBER 2026 GAMING FEA TURE visit jbhi fi .com.au/stack A RE DAD-LE TTER Y IF YOU L IKE THIS, YOU’LL LOVE THESE : The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, V ampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, Code Vein II FORMAT: GENRE: Action RPG MUL TIPLAYER: No The Blood of Dawnwalker is just the fi rst episode in a series of planned games that will culminate in present times. While it start ed as an exper iment, Onimusha went on to become one of Capcom’ s most tr easured ser ies. Blending samurai cinema, surviv al hor r or , and epic f antasy , the legend r et ur ns this month in Onimusha: W ay of the S wor d . Let’ s tak e a histor ical jour ne y ... Words Amy Flower In the beginning… The concept f or Onimusha was born back in 1 997 , when Capcom producer Y oshiki Okamoto proposed Sengoku Biohazard , which was essentially a samurai-themed remix of the smash hit Resident Evil ’s trap- fi lled mansion experience. Initially planned for the f ailed Nintendo 64 64DD disk drive peripheral, the project shif ted to the original PlayStation, before ultimately landing on the PlayStation 2, af ter the PS1 version w as binned midway into its dev elopment. This apparent misf ortune was ultimately advantageous. The po wer of the PS2 enabled Capcom’ s bof fi ns to create a ric h, atmospheric world of f eudal Japanese aesthetics and demons known as Genma, brought together by cinematic storytelling that was enhanced via motion-captured perf ormances. The game ’ s protagonist, Samanosuke Ak ec hi, was modelled af ter actor T ak eshi Kaneshiro, whic h kic ked of f a tradition of using real-lif e actors in the series. W arlor ds Released in 200 1, Onimusha: Warlords became an instant hit – and went on to be the fi rst PS2 title to sell ov er t wo million copies. While the game’ s fi xed camera angles, puzzle-based progression, and con fi ned environments w ere all reminiscent of Resident Evil , the additional sword-based combat and soul-absorption mec hanics made it very much its own beast. Play ers used the Oni Gauntlet to absorb Genma souls, whic h provided fuel f or upgrading weapons and restoring health, as w ell as unloc king new abilities. This mec hanic, whic h represented the eternal struggle between humanity and demonic corruption, became a de fi ning f eature of the series. T wo sequels In 2002, Onimusha 2: Samurai’ s Destin y introduced a new protagonist, Jubei Y agyu, and deepened the game’ s c haracter interactions. Combat was re fi ned, and branc hing story paths were introduced, adding to the series ’ established cinematic aesthetic. Then, in 2004, Onimusha 3: Demon Siege made quite the creative leap, pairing f eudal Japan with modern P aris via a time travel stor yline. F renc h actor Jean Reno portra yed Jacques Blanc, who shared protagonist duties with the original game’ s hero, Samanosuke Akec hi. One more time... With developers b y now pushing the PS2 to its limits, 2006 saw the arrival of a ne w beginning in the series, Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams . Itf eatured multiple play able c haracters, expanded environments, and deeper RPG elements. While ambitious, it didn ’t resonate with fans lik e the original trilogy did, and other than some spin-of fs – including Onimusha T actics on Game Bo y Adv ance and the PS2 brawler Blade W arriors - the Onimusha franc hise fell from Capcom’ s fav our for many y ears. R evival! The series e ventually reappeared in 20 18, via a remaster of Onimusha: W arlords , whic h w a s eventually f ollowed b y a remas ter ofOnimusha 2 in 2025.A s well as fanning the fl ames of nostalgia for original fans,t h ese re-releases introducedthe world of Onimusha to aw elcoming new audience. T heW ay T he rekindled success of thefranc h ise led to the December2024 ann ouncement ofOnimusha: W ay of the Sw ord . Af ter two decades, this is an entirely new main series entry that’ s set in Japan ’ s Edo period. Directed by Sator u Nihei, who has previously w orked on suc h classic Capcom IPs as Okami and Sengoku Basara , the gamef eatures legendar y Japanese swordsman Miy amoto Musashi as its Oni-Gauntlet-wielding protagonist. As w ell as the return of the Oni Gauntlet, the game is set to f eature re fi ned swordpla y , plus the ability to explore historic K yoto. Iconic elements suc h as soul absorption, issen counters, and the classic down ward thrust are also set to ret urn, in what Capcom are billing as a modern yet f aithful reviv al. It’ s that time of year when soccer f ans g et justi fi ably super - excit ed, as EA Sports FC 27 heads our way . W e spok e with senior game design dir ect or Kantcho Dosk o v to lear n mor e about what’ s in stor e in this y ear ’ s model. Words Amy Flower How did y ou harness community f eedback in shaping your pr ior ities and design choices for FC 27 ?Community feedbac k continues to be at the centre of how w e develop EA Sports FC .Across FC 24, FC 25, and FC 26, we ’v e listened closely to what play ers love, where the y see opportunities to improv e, and what they want to see re fl ected in-game from the real-world sport. Those insights hav e helped shape our priorities for FC 27 .Y ou can see that directly in gameplay , where we ’v e made changes in response to community f eedbac k, including intelligent cur ved runs, of f-balance dribbling , spatial aw areness, and def ensive and at tacking AI. Can you please outline an y signi fi cant chang es in gamepla y? W e’ re focused on giving play ers more control and creating more expressiv e gameplay across both at tacking and def ending. Authentic Gamepla y 2.0 brings more personality to the players and greater v ariet y in opposition tactics. W e’v e also improved of f- ball mov ement, with at t ac king runs that bet ter recognise space, def ensive positioning, and the of fside line, alongside new manually triggered r un options that give pla yers more control. Manual runs ha ve also been re fi ned to create more authentic at tacking sit uations and bet ter re fl ect a play er ’ s positioning and responsibilities. Def ending has also been rebalanced to reward manual decision making, while off-balance dribbling creates more dynamic one-on-one encounters. W e’ ve also rew orked heading and fi nishing from crosses and corners, with greater precision required for clean contact and more variety in how pla yers at tack the ball. The big new thing this year is The Grounds – an open-wor ld mode. Can y ou please tell us more? The Grounds is our ne w social football play ground and the biggest update to Clubs yet. It brings up to 1 00 play ers together in a shared world built around a central T errace and three distinct districts inspired by f ootball cultures from around the world. It’ s a place to meet up with friends, play small- sided matc hes and casual Kic kabouts, connect with football mentors, and e xpress your football identity beyond the matc h. With Clubs at the heart of the experience, pla yers hav e more way s to connect, compete, recruit teammates, and progress together . Career mode has been giv en an ov erhaul – how ha ve you impr oved upon it? One of the biggest c hanges is the rebuilt T ransfer Market. We ’ve partnered with T ransferR oom on a new pla yer variation model, e xpanded negotiations, and improv ed AI so clubs recr uit, spend, and build their squads with more distinct philosophies ov er multiple seasons. W e’ ve also ov erhauled how play ers perform and dev elop throughout their careers. Dynamic O VR allows ratings to rise and f all based on factors like form, con fi dence, fi tness, injuries, and pla ying time. New Gro wth Pro fi les add more variety to long-term dev elopment, re fl ecting ho w real players can break through, peak, and decline at very dif ferent stages of their careers. With stagger ing adv ances in AI gener ally , how ha ve you har nessed the tec hnology to impr ove FC 27 ?AI has long been part of how w e develop more responsive and authentic f ootball experiences, from gameplay sy stems to present ation. Where AI is used, our focus is on enhancing the pla yer experience and supporting the people who help bring the game to lif e. In FC 27 , one example isAI-supported commentar y , whic h helps create more dynamic matc h stor ytelling. When it comes to comment ar y and talent, this is a collaboration with approved talent and rights holders. Our focus is on using tec hnology responsibly to improv e the experience for pla yers. What excit es you the most personally about EA Sports FC 27? F or me, it's the new skill-based crossing system. It's a great example of the direction w e're t aking gameplay in f or FC 27 , giving players more controlwhile making ke y moments feel more re warding. Delivering the perf ect cross now takes more precision and timing, and when you connect with a diving header or create a great c hance from wide areas, it f eels genuinely satisfying . It's one of those c hanges that adds more depth to gameplay while still f eeling authentic to football. jbhifi.com.au 14 SEPTEMBER 2026 GAMING FEA TURE visit jbhi fi .com.au/stack K ICK I T T O M E! • EA Sports FC 27 is out Sep 25 FORMAT: GENRE: Sports MUL TIPLAYER: Y es WOM EN RIS ING “In the fi rst 26 days following FC 26 ’s launch, Women’ s Player Items were used more than one billion times in online Ultimate T eam matches, up nearly 30% year over year .” -

One of the highlights of this year’ s Summer Game Fest was a dev eloper Q+A with tw o of the people behind this month ’ s Minecraf t Dungeons II – cr eativ e direct or Måns Olson, and design direct or Laura de Llor ens. Her e’ s what they had t o sa y about the hotly anticipated sequel. Words Bec Summer Wh y was the decision made to cr eate a sequel, r ather than expanding the original Minecraf t Dungeons ? MO: The team f elt they had ‘hit the ceiling’ of what the original engine and struct ure could support. W e wanted to build a game with tr ue exploration, interconnected en vironments, and more systemic gamepla y , whic h required starting fresh. The sequel is meant to f eel closer to vanilla Minecraf t in terms of w orld logic and play er freedom. How is explor ation diff erent this time? LdL: The fi rst game was built around linear missions. Minecraf t Dungeons II shif ts to open, connected regions where play ers can roam, discov er secrets, and revisit areas. The world is designed to f eel like a real place, not a sequence of lev els. T raversal tools and verticality play a muc h bigger role. The or iginal game was accessible f or allcomers. Ho w are y ou approaching dif fi culty this time out? MO: Play ers who loved the fi rst game hav e grown up. The sequel ages up with them – of fering more c hallenge, more build depth, and more meaningful gear c hoices. It’ s still approac hable, but the ceiling is muc h higher for pla yers who want complexity . What chang es are y ou bringing t o the game ’ s gear and loot? LdL: Loot is more customisable, modular , and build-de fi ning. Instead of just fi nding stronger versions of the same items, pla yers can t ailor gear to their playstyle.E nchantments, perks, and sy nergies matter more. W e w a nt loot to feel like a real RPG sy ste m, not just a treadmill. How does this sequel br ing us closer to classic Minecraf t ? MO: The team w anted the sequel to feel more like Minecraf t ’ s world – biomes, str uctures, creatures, and en vironment al stor ytelling are more faithful to the main game. The world is less abstract and more grounded in Minecraf t ’ s logic. What’ s inst ore for multipla yer f ans? LdL: Multiplay er is still core to the experience, but the sy stems are redesigned to support the new w orld struct ure. Players can split up, explore independently , or re group for combat. The goal is t o make co-op feel more d ynamic and less tied to linearp rogression.S o,would you s ay thatMinecr aft Du ngeons IIis still a dun geon crawler? MO: Y es, but it’s a dungeon crawler with e xploration, systems, and play er agency layered on top. W e describe it as an action advent ure dungeon crawler set in a living world. What was the bigg est lesson that you t ook onboard from the fi rst game? LdL: Play ers wanted more freedom, more build expression, and more reasons to revisit areas. The sequel is built around those desires. W e also learned how muc h play ers value co-op, so we ’v e invested hea vily in making it smoother and more fl exible. jbhifi.com.au 18 SEPTEMBER 2026 GAMING FEA TURE visit jbhi fi .com.au/stack LET’S B L O C K! W eapon X hits our scr eens this month in PS5 exclusiv e Marvel’ s W olver ine . W e had a c hat with Jess Reiner -Reed, the game ’ s senior pr oject direct or at Insomniac, to lear n mor e about the much-anticipat ed game. Words Amy Flower S ince debuting in Mar vel Comics bac k in 1 97 4, we’ ve borne witness to sev eral takes on W olverine. Insomniac w orked closely with Mar vel to nail do wn their game- ready version. “W e worked with the team at Marvel games closely to craf t our W olverine advent ure, ” con fi rms Reiner -Reed. “Right from the start, we kne w we had to get claw combat right. When you pic k up the controller y ou want to f eel the power of ha ving adamantium claws. It was also important to stay true to c haracter by representing his mutant powers through gameplay , including his enhanced animalistic senses and healing abilities. ” Naturally , keeping a certain look was crucial. “There are also a f ew visual aspects that were important to keep intact. Logan is canonically short, so we planned that aspect from the beginning – making sure that when lining up all our c haracters Logan is visibly shorter , ” reveals R einer -Reed. “Logan ’ s body hair was also the subject of multiple conv ersations across departments. Logan is a hair y guy , and we wanted to mak e sure that part of his c haracter was w ell represented in-game. ” Fans of Insomniac’ s Mar vel’ s Spider -Man games will be happy to hear that Marvel’ s W olverine is set in the same universe. But don ’ t necessarily expect to hang out with Spide y . “ Mar vel’ s W olverine takes place in our Insomniac Mar vel univ erse of 1 048, the same as our Mar vel’ s Spider -Man titles, ” Reiner -Reed tells us. “Being in the same univ erse gives us a c hance to include some shared Mar vel ref erences that fans will spot, but there’ s no crossov er in our game bet ween c haracters. “ Mar vel’ s W olverine f ocuses on telling Logan ’ s stor y , in a world where mutants are of ten in the shadows. In past Spider -Man games, superheroes are of ten appreciated and get high- fi ves on the street, but in Marvel’ s W olverine , Logan and other mutants are of ten seen as outcasts – or worse - and are under at tack and in danger of capture. ” It may be the same univ erse, but it’ s set to be a much wider one to explore. “Logan is not a gu y who stays put in one place f or ver y long, ” says R einer -R eed with a smile. “In Mar vel’ s W olverine Logan ’ s on a mission that will take him around the world to disco vers the my steries of his past. During this adventure he’ll head to v arious locales including a remote snowy area in Canada, the streets of Shinjuku, and two canonical Mar vel locations – the jungles of T elambang and Lo wtown in Madripoor . ” W e wondered whether the team faced an y c hallenges creating the combat when Logan is so robust and hard to kill... “During dev elopment we did tr y dif ferent options to utilise Logan ’ s mutant healing factor during combat, ” admits Reiner -Reed. “There w ere earlier versions of his healing factor that incentivised the play er to retreat/ hide and wait f or health to regen. This didn ’ t feel lik e Logan. Instead, Logan is someone who w ould st ay in the bat tle, and we w anted to incorporate that feeling of running to wards danger ev en when your health is dire into our gameplay loop. “During combat, Logan will increase his Rage tiers by taking out enemies aggressively or performing certain at tacks, the higher the Rage tier the more lethal mov es you ha ve access too. Through Rage tiers y ou also hav e access to Last Stand, which is when L ogan ’ s heart has nearly stopped in bat tle from too muc h damage, and you ha ve a c hance to use your healing f actor to get bac k into the fi ght. ” With so many potential ideas to include, the Insomniac team remained focused on the big prize. “Game dev elopment is all about iteration, ” say s Reiner -Reed. “W e experiment, prototype, conduct playtests. Ultimately , when looking at all the ideas for Marvel’ s W olverine , we kept f ocusing on the North St ar – ‘What’ s going to give the pla yer the ultimate W olverine experience?’ There are alwa ys so many ideas, but part of our responsibility is making sure we pic k the right ones f or Logan and our advent ure. ” Reiner -Reed is con fi dent that they nailed it. “I’m so happy with e ver ything we did get into the game, the environments and c haracters look gorgeous, combat is fun, stor ytelling and cinematics are top-notc h, and the game runs at a smooth 60fps on a base PS5. There isn ’t an ything that keeps me up at night wishing we got it in. ” CL A W AN D ORDER! His dedication to delivering a believable Wolverine is felt every time he’ s on the mocap stage or in the VO booth. What I love about his delivery is he’ s able to get the rage and anger you expect from Wolverine, but also subtle emotional moments which are important when we have a character who isn’t always the best at voicing his emotions.” WOL V IE! While tackling contemporary themes, the film harks bac k to the action movies of the ’80s and ’90s, when heroes were defined by clear -cut morals and there was lit tle room for gre y areas. Connor is relentlessly focused on his objective, of ten making decisions that come at the expense of those around him. “He’ s a reluctant hero, ” Garret t says. “He doesn't want to be there and he doesn't want to help. Garret t grew up in a militar y family , with his father serving in the Vietnam W ar and his brother in the Gulf W ar , while director William Kaufman is also a militar y veteran. “He spends time and dedication on authenticity and making sure the diff erent sounds of weapons are accurate and not just ‘P ew pe w pew’ , ” Garret t say s of Kaufman. “W ith William, you can tell the types of weapons... because he's been there and he's done it. ” Garret t also under went additional weapons training f or the film, including learning to handle an AK-47 . “I do weapons training e ver y year with Lioness . Iwas a massive fan since hearing Biding My T ime . And it’ s funny how life works – I’m now really good friends with T om Busby . My management own a caravan on a beach in Fingal Head, near the NSW and Queensland border . T om owns the caravan next to it, and my manager’ s husband Robert, who’ s my A&R, is best friends with T om. So, I hang out with T om a lot. Back in the day , I was a proper fan-boy: bought the record, slammed it every day . Y eah, they were a big inspiration for me, for sure. And T om’ s such a great guy – it’ s all about music and family for him. J A CK GRA Y # 1 MY FIRST ALBUM Swimming in Jeans by Jack Gray is out Sep 11 v ia IslandIn the hotseat this month is VERA BLUE , who has just r eleased her third album. Five words to describe yourself: Curious, extremely sensitive, imaginative, determined, hopeful. Y our all-time favourite album? OMG, hard one! I’d say Enya – Paint the Sky with Stars .What did your most memorable school report say? It always went along the lines of, “Celia has a wonderful imagination but is easily distracted.” Looking back, that feels pretty accurate as I am constantly daydreaming (hello, ADHD). What’ s an ear ly , cher ished music memory? De fi nitely my fi rst concert! I was eight years old and my mum surprised me after school that we were going to see Linkin Park that night. I was so excited, singing all the lyrics, jumping off the arena chairs until it fl ipped upwards and mum had to catch me so I didn’t fall! I got to see Linkin Park again recently , it was so amazing and nostalgic reliving those childhood memories as they were my fi rst concerts in 2010 and 2013 – I got to high fi ve Mike Shinoda, meet the drummer Collin, and get a setlist signed! S T ACK Photo credit: Dave Jenkins Jr Which r ecent album do you cur r ently have on repeat? My current on repeats are new releases by Boundaries Y earning: The unbeautiful after , which includes some features from Australia’ s very own Make Them Suffer , and Bring Me The Horizon’ s Count Y our Blessings: Repented . I just went over to the UK to see BMTH, as they did an intimate concert to celebrate 20 years of CYB, a de fi ning album in their career . The live show and re-edition of the album takes us back to the 2000s! What’ s y our all-time fa vour ite album and wh y? This is a really hard one, but I would say it’ s between Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park or A quiet place to die by Alpha Wolf. Hybrid Theory was my favourite childhood album, and the fi rst CD I ever bought. I had to keep replacing the CD from how much I’d spin it in the car . Alpha Wolf have also been making waves and putting Australian metal music on the map for some years now , AQPTD was their debutstudio album during the fi rst waves of COVID – it’ s de fi nitely an album I fi nd myself revisiting, it’ s an absolute banger start to fi nish. Do you ha ve a vin yl collection? If so, ho w did it begin, and expand? My fi rst ever physical media purchases were actually at JB as a kid, this was before the vinyl revival so I’d bought CDs from bands like Linkin Park, Green Day , and Bring Me the Horizon! I like to collect pieces from merch at concert or signings, and have picked up quite a few pieces from JB over the years. I got some really nice coloured and marbled Knocked Loose, Diamond Construct, and Bad Omens vinyl at JB. What do you enjo y most about wor king in music at JB? I worked at a JB store before moving to the Support Of fi ce, I miss keeping the store music section organised and putting out all the new releases fresh off the press! I had an eye for fi nding things, so I was always fi nding a speci fi c CDs/vinyl for customers. Now that I work online, I enjoy getting to speak with customers occasionally about our music taste, and helping coordinating customer enquiries with the music team! Modern Rituals by V era Blue is out now via Island Australia S EP T EM B ER What would be your Hard Quiz expert subject? Harry Potter . Or dachshunds. Song you wish you’d written? Imogen Heap’ s Hide and Seek or Joni Mitchell’ s A Case of You .If you weren’t a rock star , what would you be? Probably working with animals. Or , random, I almost followed the path of being a professional 100m sprint track star and long jumper . Last album you bought? FKA T wigs’ Eusexua . Literally obsessed. Aside from yourself, which musician would you most like to be? Oh, gosh! Hard to pick just one. Björk has created an entire universe around her art where every song, visual, and performance feels like part of the same story . I really admire artists who build worlds rather than just release music. What’ s the most ridiculous item you’ve ever put on your rider? It’ s always just been what we truly need, so nothing has ever been ridiculous. For my next tour I am going to request a framed image of my dachshund T exas. He gives me so much joy . Y our funeral song? I’d need more time to think about this before I go! But Landslide andSongbird by Fleetwood Mac are beautiful songs that mean a lot to me. Happiness is... many things! No w they return with their atmospheric new album, Hun .Opening with a stomping, swaggering banger that sounds like something T om W aits might hav e dragged out of a smoky back alle y bar , Hun hits the ground running. Deep marc hing beats, inf ectious rhythms, trademark throat singing, and primal c hants set the tone. Surprisingly , this is only The HU’ s third studio album. Given how prolific the y’ve become, not to mention their relentless touring, collaborations, and appearances on soundtrac ks, it f eels like they’ ve More. His English-language vocals introduce a surprisingly punky edge, with Hawkins ’ melodic delivery bouncing against the band’ s deep Mongolian chants. It’ s an unusual combination, but one that works, pro ving The HU can stretc h their sound without snapping the cultural thread at its core. Then there ’ s Ec hoes of My Father , a six -minute-plus ballad that slows the galloping pace and rev eals a more reflective side. There ’ s something w onderfully ageless about it, as though its melody has been drif ting across been around far longer . That experience is e vident here. Hun is their most polished, rhythmic, and assertive w ork to date, with the band sounding increasingly confident in their melding of traditional Mongolian music, roc k, and metal. Interestingly , it’ s also not as relentlessly heavy as The Gereg orR umble of Thunder . Instead, The HU are clearly more i nterested in exploringthe space between folk, roc k, and metal, with lay ered traditional instrumentation, pounding percussion, and a stronger emphasis on groov e. The result is eclectic without ev er losing its identity . I & ...BE S T II F ew bands in music history polarise audiences as decisively as The Smiths. P ossibly the very de fi nition of a lov e-it-hate-it band, Morrissey and Johnn y Marr were a creativ e pow erhouse duo for only fi ve short years, between 1 982 and 1 987 , bef ore personal diff erences led The Smiths to disband. In- credibly , during that brief tenure, the band recorded four st udio albums. These two fresh compilation reissues, originally released in 1 992, land in an era saturated with algorithmic playlists and disposable pop, providing a reminder of what a genuinely complete artistic statement sounds like – e ven one stitc hed together from a catalogue that the band themselves dismantled in 1 987 . Split across two volumes, Best I and II trace The Smiths ’ arc from the wir y , c himing urgency of their Rough T rade beginnings to the ric her , more orc hestrated melanc holy of their fi nal releases. Johnn y Marr ’ s guit ar work remains ut terly audacious – nev er content to simply strum behind a vocal, he la yers, plunders unconv entional open tunings, stretc hes fi ngers across impossible c hords, and conjures entire moods. He draws as muc h from Motown pop as from post-punk austerity . It’ s guit ar music that refuses to abide by the r ules. Morrissey , of course, is the other half of this equation – a vocalist who t urned self-pit y into high art, delivering couplets that are as funny as the y are anguished, of ten within the same breath. Even no w , his phrasing retains that peculiar Mancunian theatri- cality: never quite ironic, ne ver quite sincere, alwa ys some- where thrillingly in between. Best... I sk ews tow ards the earlier material’ s brightness and bite; ... Best II drifts into dark er , more text ured terrain, evidence of a band growing more ambi- tious ev en as internal fractures pulled them apart. T aken separately , eac h record holds up in its own right; togeth- er , the y form an ex cellent insight into the band’ s brief yet visionar y career . Purists will insist the st udio al- bums, sequenced and context u- alised as their makers intended, remain the true w ay into The Smiths. But for the uninitiated, or those simply craving the hits, these compilations do the job admirably – capturing a band that burned fast, burned brilliantly , and lef t behind a body of work still being unpac ked, quoted, and argued ov er nearly four decades on. TOP TRACK: How Soon Is Now? FAS T FACT: Neither Morrissey nor Marr had any say in picking or sequencing the tracks. Warner assembled the track lists for both albums, yet Best... I still wentstraight to number one. Both covers use the same striking ‘Biker Couple, 1961’ split image. T aken in 1961, actor Dennis Hopper’ s raw , cinematic couple portrait later became one of his most reproduced photographs. THE COVERS Words Paul Jones Page contents: -

51 PREVIEWS MUSIC D rummer/singer/songwriter Phil Collins began his career in 1 967 in English band Genesis, whose lead singer P eter Gabriel lef t in 1 975 to pursue a solo career , with the band taking 1 8 months to adjust. Af ter auditioning more than 400 singers, they decided that Collins would take o ver . Dispensing with costumes and songs that grew into elaborate suites synonymous with the Gabriel era, Genesis reached a muc h bigger audience with more radio-friendly songs and Collins as lead singer . While still a member of Genesis, Collins released his fi rst solo album, Face Value , in 1 981 . The album, recently re-released as a Limited Deluxe Expanded Vin yl Box Set, was an instant commercial success, selling more than eight million copies worldwide. Songs suc h as the international smash hit In the Air T onight, I Missed A gain, and IfLea ving Me Is Easy related to a relationship breakdown that the singer was e xperiencing . Musically , Collins called on dif ferent genres, incorporating his lov e for R&B by hiring the Phenix Horns who play ed bac kup for Earth, Wind & Fire, as well as bassist Alphonso Johnson and violinist L. Shankar . In re-listening to Face Value , it’ s not dif fi cult to underst and why this album has maintained its appeal. Radio legend Billy Pinnell presents Billy Pinnell’ s Musical Moments on Y ouT ube. T’S OUT T HIS MONT H? PHIL COLL INS Face Value (Deluxe Blu-ray Edition) INERTIA BIL Y ’S PICK EVAN E SCENCE Sanctuary SONY Every Evanescence album has hit the T op 10. In a crazy modern world, singer Amy Lee says they found their sanctuary , their “comfort and connection through the power of music”. These songs will sound great live, and Evanescence will be back in Australia in March next year . KASABIAN Act III SONY Act III is the ninth studio album for England’ s Kasabian, who will celebrate their 30th anniversary next year . Speaking about the single, singer Serge Pizzorno said: “ Great Pretender is about imposter syndrome, not as a weakness but as a sign you’re on the edge of something real. It’ s that feeling right before you step on stage, when the lights go down and it’ s now or never .” L IZZY McALPIN E Angel SONY Lizzy McAlpine’ s dad died on March 13, 2020. Since then, she has dedicated track 13 on every album to him. The American artist says this record blends the ’70s Laurel Canyon sound with a modern indie feel. Angel follows Lizzy’ s third album, Older ,which was her fi rst T op 40 entry in Australia. LEON BRIDGES Happiness Anytime SONY “For me, happiness is not a feeling that you chase,” American soul star Leon Bridges says. “I want this album to be something that lingers in people’ s bones. There’ s this feeling that we have to fi x the problems of the world. My role is to be light. I hope that comes across with this album.” A USSIE RELEASES THE PROCLAIMERS Y ou May O end MGM After travelling way more than 500 miles, the Reid twins, Craig and Charlie, are still making music. Y ou May Offend is the 13th studio album for the great Scots. “Is it an instruction or an invitation?” Charlie ponders. “Or a warning?” ROGER T AYLOR Violence Insane in a Beautiful World SONY This is the seventh solo album for Queen drummer Roger T aylor . The opening track, A Beautiful World , features South Africa’ s Ndlovu Y outh Choir . And the record includes a cover of John Lennon’ s Jealous Guy .AMYL AND THE SNIFFERS Truth or Consequence AMYL AND THE SNIFFERS Amyl and The Sniffers go country . Y es, you read that right. Australia’ s biggest punk band has done a country album. It’ s a live album, recorded at LA ’ s El Coyote in April last year . No, it was not April Fools’ Day . The band countri fi es ten of their songs, unveils two previously unreleased tracks, and covers the Slim Dusty classic Lights on the Hill . It’ s been recorded by Keith Urban, Mental As Anything, T roy Cassar -Daley & Adam Harvey, and now Amyl and The Sniffers. Y ou have to hear it to believe it. JUL IA JACKL IN The Gem ROCKET Julia Jacklin’ s fourth album – her fi rst since signing a global deal with indie label 4AD - takes its title from a great pub in Collingwood in Melbourne. The album was recorded in a little studio above the bar . Speaking about the contradictions at the heart of the record, Julia says: “I want to love and be loved, but I also want to be free. The tension between those two things has been the central question of my life. The Gem felt like a metaphor for the whole process, because a lot of it did feel like digging. I felt like I was doing it almost in the dark, just trusting I was going to fi nd something.” P AUL KELL Y & THE M E SSENGERS Gossip (40th Anniversary) INERTIA Gossip was the album that changed everything for Paul Kelly . His record company saw it as the last roll of the dice. Remarkably , Paul insisted that it be a double album – a pretty bold demand from an artist who’d yet to break through. Indeed, legend has it that the late, great music mogul Michael Gudinski replied, “Y ou’ve got to be f-cking joking!” But he did release the double album. And when the fi rst single, Before T oo Long , was picked up by commercial radio, Paul Kelly was on his way . And he had plenty more great songs to back it up. Gossip is one of the greatestAussie albums of all time. UPS AND DOWNS Radio Is Dead MGM The cover of the new Ups and Downs EP shows Geoff Atkinson behind the microphone. The father of the brothers in the band, Greg and Darren, Geoff was a radio announcer in the band’ s hometown of Brisbane. Forty years after their breakthrough single The Living Kind led to a nomination for‘Best New Artist’ at the fi rst ARIA Awards (the trophy went to Crowded House), Ups and Downs are back with their fi rst new music in ten years. Radio might be dead, but the band’ s brand of jangle pop still sounds fresh. Fun fact: Ups and Downs are one of Rick Spring fi eld’ s favourite Aussie bands. NAT AL IE IMBRUGL IA Algorithm ROCKET T wenty-nine years after T orn tore up the charts, Natalia Imbruglia is releasing her seventh album, her fi rst in fi ve years. The Aussie artist co-wrote every track on the record, which followed a dif fi cult period in her life. “This was by far the most fun I’ve ever had making a record,” she says. “It also happened to coincide with the most challenging time I’ve had with my mental health. This is the beauty of music and artistic expression. Y ou can take something dark and turn it into light. I really hope that people get as much joy from listening to this record as we did. And that they dance their arses off.” Page contents: -

Finals footy is almost her e, and the r ight TV can put y ou closer to the action – without bat tling cr ow ds at the gr ound. With the AFL Grand Final landing on Sept ember 26 and the NRL decider follo wing on Oct ober 4, her e ’ s what to look for when c hoosing a TV w orth y of f ooty fi nals f ever . Words Scott Hocking Ho w big should you go? F or fi nals footy? As big as y our room comfortably allows. A larger screen makes the action easier to follo w while bringing more of that stadium atmosphere home. A 55- or 65-inc h TV suits many living rooms, while 75- and 85-inc h models seriously elev ate the immersion. Got the space? Huge 98- and 1 00-inc h-plus TVs can turn the lounge into y our own grandstand. Just don ’ t chase inc hes at the e xpense of picture quality . Measure y our space and balance screen size, pict ure qualit y , and budget. Why does a TV’s r efresh rate matt er? F oot y mov es fast. The ball can travel from one end of the ground to the other in seconds, and sweeping camera shots can e xpose a TV that struggles with motion. A native refresh rate of 1 0 0Hz/1 20Hz or higher helps reproduce fast action smoothly and keep the ball and pla yers easier to follo w . Y ou’ll also fi nd TVs off ering 1 44Hz, 1 65Hz, and ev en higher refresh rates. Those bigger numbers are particularly useful for gaming with compatible sources, but for w atc hing sport, don ’t get caught holding the ball: strong motion processing and source quality matter too. Why do wide viewing angles matter? Grand Final day rarely means w atc hing alone. Wide viewing angles help maintain colour , brightness, and contrast when watc hing of f- centre – so the wings get a good view as w ell as the centre square. OLED is particularly strong for wide-angle viewing, but performance v aries bet ween TVs, so it’ s worth considering if you regularly w atch sport with a crow d. Can you watch the footy in 4K? Y es, but picture resolution depends on the source. Sports broadcasts and streams vary in resolution depending on the ser vice and ev ent, and not ev er ything will be native 4K. That mak es good picture processing and upscaling important. They can help lo wer - resolution broadcasts and streams look cleaner and sharper on a 4K screen, although they can ’ t create detail that isn ’t in the original source. Should you use Sports picture modes? If your TV has a dedicated Sports picture mode, give it a r un. These modes generally fa vour brightness, punc hier colour , and smoother motion – handy when follo wing a Sherrin or Steeden at full fl ight. A low or moderate amount of motion smoothing can also make f ast play and camera pans easier to follo w . A v oid cranking everything to maximum, as ex cessive processing can introduce unw anted picture artefacts. Ultimately , tr ust your ey es: the best set ting is the one that keeps the action looking nat ural in your room. At just 9.9mm thin, the W6 sits virt ually fl ush against the wall f or a clean, galler y-like fi nish. It’ s a striking bit of industrial design, but the clev er part is that LG hasn ’t traded aw ay the big-screen performance to get there. What does T rue Wireless actually mean? Consoles, streaming box es, and other sources connect to LG’ s separate Zero Connect Bo x, whic h sends 4K video and audio wirelessly to the screen. That means f ar f ewer cables hanging around y our beautifully mounted TV . The screen and Zero Connect Bo x still need pow er , so think cleaner setup rather than completely cable-free. A g aming monitor can mak e your g ames look smoother , shar per , and more immersiv e – but what separat es a gr eat gaming displa y from an ev eryda y monitor? Her e’ s what you need t o know . Words Bec Summer What mak es a gaming monitor different? Gaming monitors are designed around speed and responsiveness. Higher refresh rates mak e mov ement smoother , while low response times help keep f ast action looking clear . Many also support v ariable refresh rate tec hnologies that sync hronise the monitor with compatible gaming hardware, helping reduce screen tearing and stut tering. Look f or AMD F reeSync, NVIDIA G-S YNC Compatible, or VES A Adaptiv eSync, whic h use VRR to help smooth gameplay when frame rates fl uctuate. Add gaming-f ocused display tec hnologies, HDR, and ultrawide or curved screen options, and the dif ference goes w ell beyond simply put ting “gaming” on the box. What refr esh rate do you need for gaming? Refresh rate, measured in hertz (Hz), tells y ou how man y times the screen can refresh eac h second. Higher isn ’t automatically bet ter for ev er yone. A 1 60-180Hz monitor pro vides ver y smooth gameplay , while 240Hz and 280Hz models suit fast-paced, competitiv e gaming where every frame can mat ter . There's lit tle point c hasing 280Hz, how ever , if your PC can't generate the frame rates to take advantage of it. Does response time matter? Y es, particularly in fast games. Response time measures how quic kly pix els can change, with low er fi gures helping reduce blur or ghosting during rapid mov ement. Some current OLED gaming monitors specify response times as low as 0.03ms (GtG) f or particularly crisp motion. Is QHD or 4K better for gaming? It depends on your priorities and hardw are. QHD (2560×1 440) balances sharp detail with high frame rates, particularly on 27 -inc h monitors. 4K (3840×21 60) steps up the detail for larger display s and visually spect acular games, but you'll need more PC muscle to driv e it. Ultrawide WQHD screens add horizontal viewing space, whic h can mak e racing , simulation, and expansiv e games especially immersive. Good HDR can add impact to highlights while rev ealing more det ail across bright and dark areas of compatible games. Is OLED worth it for a gaming monitor? Absolutely! If picture quality mat ters, OLED can deliver deep blac ks, e xcellent contrast, and very fast pix el response because individual pixels can switc h themselves of f . QD-OLED combines OLED’ s contrast and speed with quantum-dot colour tec hnology , while conv entional LCD gaming monitors remain compelling too, particularly when value, brightness, or a larger screen is the priority . Why do you need a dedicated GAMING MONI T OR? jbhifi.com.au 32 SEPTEMBER 2026 TECH FEA TURE visit jbhi fi .com.au/stack Match the monitor to your games Competitive shooters: Prioritise high refresh rates, low response times, and VRR Racing and simulation: Consider a curved ultrawide display for a broader , more immersive view RPGs and open-world games: Resolution, HDR, contrast, and screen size become more important A bit of everything: QHD with a high refresh rate offers an excellent balance of image quality and speed. Don’t forget your gaming hardw ar e A 280Hz or 4K badge on the box doesn't magically make every game run at 280fps or 4K.
